cars you will never own but wish you could

A sierra rs500, it is one of my most favourite cars of all time but rs mong tax has bumped them way out of reach for me, I'll have to settle for a replica

Ford Mustang.  I've had two near-misses when you could pick them up for next to nothing (later models though, not 60s types).  Prices of even these are running away now, can't see me having one.

Bentley, of any sort but ideally a Chinese-eye S3.

Early 70s Toyota Celica, or the contemporary Rapier fastback.  Could have had a Rapier in Cyprus if I'd had any money left.  Damn healthcare!

Some I have had but would like to repeat: Corsair 2000E, Supermirafiori twin cam, Polonez, 1962 Cadillac, Arrow Sceptre.  None of them are within reach now.

Cit XM - as someone said, the good ones are a bit pricey now (but I still might....), cheap ones are moneypits.

Surely Dollywobbler's disproved this over the last eight months or so? I've never found my XMs to be expensive to run and I do know where there might be a cheap one for sale.

As for me I'll probably never own a 2CV or Frogeye Sprite now. Prices for both are just too high. I think I can add the Citroen C6 to the list too. I really want one but the tales I read about the costs when they go wrong scare me.

Forgot to add: Vauxhall Victor FD estate, preferably 3.3; and in the repeat section, Vauxhall PA.  Neither is going to happen.

There has been one knocking about on ebay at a sensible price. It's on Car and classic site now. I recommend them, best suspension evah!

Best suspension, worst driving position.

Worse than a mk1 Granada?  That must have taken some doing!

Interceptor in precisely the same blue that BV's Fabboceptor had.

A decent value mid sized car in 5-8 years time because all that there'll be is diesels (if any survive).

come back to me....

Far, far worse. Stupid curved seat runners mean if you're not exactly the right height with the exact right length legs you end up with your arse a foot below the leading edge of the seat and your knees wedged under the non adjustable steering wheel. The alternative is to move the seat closer and saw your feet off.

It's a real shame because the actual seats are really very comfy, the ride quality is excellent and the 604 handles brilliantly for a big 70s motah. The engine has a very strange power delivery in injected guise, initial poke off the line is fine but I found mine had an optimum rev range of about 4 rpm somewhere around 2250-2254. Above that it made more noise but the odd fire PRV V6 isn't ideal. The 604 was designed to be V8 engined but during the early 70s fuel crisis it appears they just chopped a couple of pots from the V8 and did bugger all else to sort it out.

After 18 months and a lot of work to bring my 604 back to respectable condition I was mortified when I drove it the 20 miles from the welders to discover I really couldn't get on with the driving position. I'd only driven Phil DNJ's one around a car park before driving mine on the road for the first time. I'd always wanted one, which is why I commissioned its rescue, so to find it was impossible to get comfy was a real disappointment. My dad, who'd had new 604s always used to curse the seat runners and I couldn't work out why - until I drove mine.

Mk2 Granada Ghia X Exec leather seats are almost as uncomfortable, but at least they're electrically adjustable into a half decent position.

Mk1 Lotus Cortina. I had a 1963 1200 Consul that was a negative of Lotus in that it was green and I put a white stripe down the side, Stooopid money now.

Mk2 Lotus Cortina. Never had one, but there were two locally-a neighbours brother had one, and a mate from school had one. He had a Mk1 Lotus, then a Mk2, both before he was 20.

And a Bedford CA Utilabrake. My dad had one (registration number 477 MVW, so it was pre 1963). We had great times in that, travelling all over the country in it. Funds may soon allow me to buy one, but will there be any left by then?

I'll never own one of these, but I'd like to.

I was tempted by a C6 about 8 months ago to replace my Chrysler 300, but good sense pevailed and I bought a sensible reliable BMW.

The same BMW that's sitting ,fucked on a ramp whilst I'm desperately trying to find a secondhand head and cams to keep the repair costs under £2,000.

When it's back it's going and I'll be buying a C6 or another 300 or a Hyundai Grandeur, anything but a sensible German car.

Ah yes, the famous 115982_Front_3_4_Web.  I'm sure one would be very nice.

It's a classic.

So much stuff is well out of my budget and/or extinct at this point, here is a run down of crap I want that could be bought for £12 in 1990:

Mk2 Capri. Preferably in some brown/yellow colour with a vinyl roof for maximum 70sness. I'd paint the bonnet matte black and put too many spotlights on the front. Sadly they are now silly money if not rotten because Ford tax.

Toyota Corolla E20. I'd want a nice unmolested one, sadly the survivors are a fortune and/or JDM YO'd in oblivion.

Toyota 1000. See above. Fuck, add all other 70s Japanese tin to the list...

Hillman Avenger. These were worthless until about a year ago, now the fetch decent money. What happened?!

Mini. I'd want a Mk2 or Mk3 (Clubman if in estate form). They're worth a fortune AND are usually rotten to boot.

Mk1 Cortina. Ford tax, even the pushrod propelled lumps are big money.

Volvo 245. The original 1970s cars now fetch solid money, even later cars seem to be on the up...

F72EHR my original 205 GR which I regret scrapping at least weekly.

Can't even buy the plate back from DVLA!

Oh bugger, I'd forgotten about Bristols (car not...) I do love a nice Bristol. Always wanted a 407/408 but I'd happily settle for the late ugly bastards as even they are gorgeous.

When I was but a nipper there was an early 401 (?) abandoned (you get a better class of motor dumped when you live in Kew) and even though the paint was falling off in sheets it wasn't rusty and I couldn't understand why. It was much later I realised 'cos aluminium. The interior was shabby but soooo cool, I wanted that car.
