just up the road from me! used to peugot talbot i think - good kebab shop round the corner as well  :-D

The Peugeot Talbot garage was Hunts and further up the road towards Stansted. I haven't been there for a few years now and believe it has gone now along with BJ Ashpoles the motor factors who were brilliant for old obscure parts. All sold off for housing I expect, lots of lovely old workshops have been lost as the plots are worth so much more as housing. The Glyn Hopkin place was Chantry garage and a Renault dealers. I worked in their Saffron Walden branch and used to reguarly thrash the old Opel Reckord van between the two branches.

This place started off as a petrol and service station reception back in the early 60s when it had a fully glass exterior. It has a basement connecting it to the garage in the tower block next door where there is still a car service and sales business. Designed by (fairly) famous (around here) modernist architects Jaenecke and Samuelson, who also designed the accompanying apartment blocks it is, I understand, now listed.

Anyway, now its a fast food joint!

Running on vapour in the middle of nowhere last week.

post-17481-0-86775500-1498386248_thumb.jpg

I had just enough cash for 3 gallons.

Service was delayed by a crowd of walkers who bought the entire stock of pop and chocolate.

*I learned of the place here. http://autoshite.com/topic/26400-turnastone-garage-anybody-ever-been-autoshite-meetingexcursion-location-maybe/

It amazes me the change over the last 40 years.....My first job was a pump jockey at the local Opel dealer's.   Boss-man reckoned the locals preferred to pay a penny or two a gallon extra for the full service.  As Chuck Berry wrote - Wipe the windows, check the tyres, check the oil, dollar gas.   Used to run into the cash desk and get their fags or a bar of Aero as well.

There was a fully automatic car wash too, one of only two within 15-20 miles.   It was a bit of a white elephant because nobody much used it.

Now it is completely the opposite - people drive 20 miles to fill up for a penny a litre less and expect to do everything themselves but then spaff nine quid on having their car washed with a dirty rag while they sit inside cocking with a phone.

I just googled them and man, they did some superb archishite.

Well worth posting some in the actual archishite thread.

I desperately want to find a photo of Central garage in Laurieston. It was a small Simca dealer owned by my Grandfather way before my time.

I've looked online for years for a photo. I need to take a day off during the week sometime to go to the local archives. I'm very conscious that photos only exist if they were taken by someone.

Not the most architecturally significant, but they're old school, and not that far from each other. Fyvie Garage I have pics of, but PhotoFuckit has probably lost them, so StreetView will have to do. The service station in Turriff, believe it or not, quite happily serves artics, which is quite old school. Somebody comes out of the garage to watch your blind side, so you don't twat the pump on the way out...

I'll get pics of our village garage when it's light, it's delightfully old school!

The facebook page "Americar the Beautiful" has a Gas Station section well worth a look.

You don't need a facebook account, just decline their invitation to open one with the not now button and carry on with the page. This link opens the gas station section at the first image.

^^On my manor that is.  Penge has its fair share of grim shop fronts despite gentrification creeping in.  The Duckhams sign must be worth a few quid, I'm surprised it's still there.

This is the nicest. Appears painted on the glass - so would come out of the frame. Keep your eyes peeled - if builders move in these could be saved. May be more inside.

Glasses of milk still enjoyed by springtime lovers.

This 50's beauty is in Carrouges Normandy. No petrol sales but still used for repairs.

Hey, I know that one (although wouldn't have remembered where it was) My photo from 2011:

Nothing appropriate outside, but inside......

My description on Flickr tells me that a GS and 2CV were also seen inside.

ah well.

It was really nicely kept when Streetview passed in 2008, but has fallen into disrepair since.

On the 1914 map, Coral Street is a very long street with more than 100 houses on it. Today, it still exists but is about five car lengths long. This establishment, with flammable wooden crap stacked against the petrol pumps, was probably not considered for preservation.

Yes, it's a garage. The white fronted building is Union Street Garage, although it's not the most welcoming frontage. That might explain why it's not very busy. Good news though, in 2018 thousands of cars pass through Union Street Garage on a daily basis. It is underneath the Mancunian Way.

Eagle Motors here specialise in four makes, including Leyland and Ford. They also have discount petrol and a pyramid of oil. I didn't even try and track this one down on Google Maps. It was barely there when the photograph was taken.
