Worthington Smith.

The victorian artist and archeologist made numerous discoveries about Dunstable's history.

His house, which stood on that town's high street, became a treasure trove of artefacts.

He also was a national expert on fungi, increasing his knowledge of which are poisonous

by eating them and noting whether or not he felt ill.

So what would be better than to raze his property and build this?

Manchester Road, Bury:

The building survives, but it's suffered.

Photo from this excellent website. There are more pictures, go visit.

what a lovely building to then end up with usual unbranded shit that passes for business these days, no fcukin pride whatsoever.

This was somewhere on the A6 in Ardwick, but I can't find it on StreetView. There was an 'investment company' with the same name registered at no. 152, but since that's all new buildings let's assume it's long gone.

My gut feeling is that it used to be across from the park, before the park ends and the road bends right towards Manchester centre. I also think some building along there was destroyed in a fire at some point in time.

The AEC Matador based tow truck was still there in the early nineties.

Robins & Day in Maidstone. Originally a Rootes dealers, so it's stayed 'in the family'.

This is a staggeringly beautiful building.

Having seen how Maidstone is progressively sodding up its town centre I fear for its future.

OK not strictly a garage, but my Mum's flat is built on the site of this beauty - The Windsock pub & diner in Dunstable

It used to have acces right up to the roof the workshops were on the second floor.

Judging by the bumps on the top of the building in googlemaps that look suspiciously like car roofs, it still does! That's a very nicely styled garage and is still quite tasteful by modern standards. Nice one Glyn Hopkin Nissan.

Being me I go further and look from above, covered in cars but there is no obvious access point !

In Mill St Maidstone - being a former local I know it well, I don't know Robins & Day as when I left the town 15 years ago it was always known simply as 'Rootes', I used to get stuff for my 205GTi's there as it was a Pug dealer, before that it was Rootes group, Chrysler, then Talbot & Peugeot. It is a good looking building. I've heard since my departure they have fucked up alot of the towns older architechure which is a shame.

Anyway, look at this Ian Dury video (Superman's big sister) - can anyone tell me where this filling station is? Someone in the comments mentions 'Near Euston station' but many of those that comment on Yahoo frankly aren't the brightest!.

Well the person claimed to be the manager at the time. It can't be still there as the last one of those Noyes "parasol" canopy Mobil stations is Listed.

From the descrpiton by looneyplum of "up the side of Euston Station", I think it was on the Hampstead Rd, NW1 next to the bridge:

https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@51.5309528,-0.1384685,3a,75y,169.63h,85.9t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1ssTAUU5diEIt0683zAP219A!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

As you can see it is boarded up and no longer has the canopy, but if you spin round from that location, behind the trees are the (since refurbished) flats that are in the video.

I can confirm that this Mobil station was just north of Euston, along the Hampstead Road. During the 1980s I worked for British Rail and I regularly filled up at this garage.

The canopies must have gone some years ago as its been an ordinary looking BP recently until it closed about a year ago and was all boarded up.

4 Star - £1.73 a gallon (38p per litre).................... I can remember that and it seems a lifetime ago.

That used to part of the McNamara Vauxhall, the main part of which was further along the street.  I always remember that particular building housing Budget rent a car in the 1980s and their new Vauxhalls.

This building is now a repair garage H&F Autos.

The VW garage (Mann Egerton) was in Princes street opposite what was John Grose the Ford dealer.

A familiar photo being quoted here, one I took in 2010. Here's the rest of the site as it stood then, interesting to learn that it's back to being a workshop.

Definitely was VW, I recall the wording being visible. However, I didn't realise the main building (where the flats visible above now stand) also sold them and Citroen before they did Vauxhall:

The above scanned from a copy of East Anglian Magazine. These local magazines for local people are a fantastic resource for period garage ad's.

Thanks for taking the time to put this up.

You've made an exiled homesick Suffolk bumpkin smile.

Meanwhile in Belfast, this was a scooter showroom until recently:

WebEdge_FKP_85555652.jpg

I thought it the perfect house/garage. It also has a large steel portal framed building round the back for extra storage. It is now occupied by an antiques dealer. It sold in April-ish 2016 at auction for £212,500. I must admit I would have loved to own it. The antique dealer has a 20 year rental agreement.

This thread has to be ripe for stuff you can find on Google Street view. Here's mine for starters. It's in Stoke - for some reason I was having a 'look round' because of the by-election today. Anyway:
