I'm not sure it's a reason to panic,  they will probably just adjust the road tax bands on new vehicles to encourage petrol over diesel.  That said the LEZ has been keeping old lorries and buses out of London for a few years now,  it's certainly possible that other cities might follow suit.

 HI, I read about some thing similar a couple of months ago, only it was concerning particulates in the air and it came from France who were going to remove tax advantages on the use of diesels. Whatever they decide it's going to take years to push it the various bureaucracies and will end up being watered down to new vehicles only.

Many own diesels because of the miles they have to cover over a year - they own them out of necessity, not choice.

The Dutch have started to remove old Diesels from the road and even polluted Lisbon has started to resrtict old cars from some city areas (they use ANPR as automatic motorway tolls so have the systems working already even clocking my UK reg 106D)    as for the French...

The first round of these emission-cutting plans have been unveiled, but it’s not just diesel vehicles which are affected.

English language French publication Connexion reports that starting this summer, large groups of vehicles will be banned from Paris’ roads. The vehicles affected include:

• Coaches, buses and HGVs registered before 30 September 2001
• Motorcycles registered before 2000
• Vans and light trucks registered before 30 September 1997
• Cars registered before 31 December 1996

The restrictions won’t stop there, either; the plan is for them to get tighter and tighter each year. In the coming years, the roads of Paris could look very different…

I don't think that NOx gasses by themselves are the problem, it's when they are combined with Hydrocarbons it makes smog.

 

Where do the hydrocarbons come from?  Petrol engines.
