American cars a love/hate thing.

In terms of pick ups it's way back to the '40s and Walton style to satisfy my urges.

Red and made by a company better known for tractors appeals most.

Either you like AMCs or you are WRONG!

I am wrong in most respects. AMC admiration is rather akin to slavish love of things Leyland.

Posted

but surely a love of things leyland (or AMC) is actually very normal.

its everyone else who are wrong.

very, VERY WRONG.

incidentally, is the Corvan based on the chevy Corvair, with a dirty great engine hanging out of the back?

I intend to continue being wrong until I'm right.

Yes, I believe the floor plan is identical and uses the same flat six. Thinking of Don Yenko Corvair now, help.

No, don't get the American thing at all. Horses for courses and all that. Carry on.

Tu quoque beatus erit

Say wha?

You complained about the e30 seats in the .at Eagle, so I posted one that's for sale in .fr which still has its original seats and wrote

"you too can be happy" in Latin. At least I hope I did.

Never owned a Yank motor.

Have a mate who, years ago was an autoshiter of EPIC proportions (yes, he was fat! :)  ) He had a Pacer if that's the one with the extra long door on one side? Anyway, 3 litre plus straight six motor and an auto box and in all honesty, it was quite a pleasant thing to be in! It died when the gearbox went 'futt!' and we took it out in a car park by the beach and when we were finished, walked straight into the sea, fully dressed as we were covered in gearbox oil that stank truly badly!

Helped/hindered by the fact it was blazing hot!

No one would repair the box and a s/h one was not forthcoming so bridge it went.

Shame....

He also had a Jeep wagoneer with a V8 and slushbox and that sounded nice but that was about all!

Wow, I never expected this thread to turn into an AMC love-fest!

Where were you guys 30 years ago when AMC needed all the help it could get?

No complaint was meant. Merely expression of recognition re source of seats..in a kind of "fuck, didnt know they fitted in them" way!

Yank designed car and engine, built in Marysville Ohio. Great build quality as well mine is 16 years old now and everything still works and feels well put together, which doesn't sound very american I know.

In general I dislike the styling with the big yanks but having seen the Mercury Marauder it's now been added to the cars I need to own

AMC started going downhill in 1954, and by 1957, when all traces of Nash and Hudson had disappeared, they were completely beyond redemption.:(

30 years ago i was a whipper-snapper at maybe 9-10 years old.

and as such i was more interested in bombing around on me raliegh grifer or playin with the train set, so i was not really in a position to help either AMC, or BL in avoiding their unpleasant endings... :-(  :-( :-(

My American bucket list.

Small-arsed Euroboy seats fit easily in yanks, the other way around it could get a tad snug.

This New Yorker has just popped up on the local craigslist, not the cleanest example I'll admit but the rear seats are AMAZING . So, the engine is detuned to meet with emissions regs and you'll be in single figures MPG but still it's nearly 20ft long.

I wouldn't change it's looks, but I'd certainly be looking at ridding it of as much emissions control crap as possible and getting more grunt out of it. Sod clean air, it's over rated!

Posted

What on earth would you need more grunt for?

Why not? If there's more to have then have it I must!

I'm strangely drawn to the crap 70s velour interiors, preferably in migraine/depression inducing colours. Ditto for faux leather and wood. Although I'd rock a pickup. Preferably raised and with silly tyres (sorry, tires) on.

The mind bending insurance quote I got last year for the C5 Corvette I fell for, says it'll be a while yet though...
