Shameless DVLA and public thread (contains annoyance)

http://www.theguardian.com/money/blog/2015/apr/11/dvla-clamping-clanger-car-tax-motorists

Clampings have risen from 5k to 8k a month since the road tax laws allowed the government to collect tax twice over on the same vehicle every time it changes hands.  It seems the loss of disc was well publicised but the fact that if the name on the V5 alters then all tax is cancelled, with relatively little warning before cars are clamped/impounded/crushed.

We all know Swansea is full of people just doing what they're told by Westminster and would presumably sanction the destruction of all red cars if some loony minister decreed it necessary for the public good. What worries me isn't the brainlessness of our politicians or the zombie-like behaviour of public servants - that's what their jobs are - but the fast-moving and draconian measures implemented by the UK nowadays, if you don't jump through the right hoops in the right order at the right time.

In the space of 20 years we seem to have evolved from a reasonably tolerant nation to one which assumes every individual is a criminal, deliberately setting out to defraud society at large, treating honest citizens as if they're muggers or burglars.

It's as much to do with trying to screw every last pound out of people with indirect taxation methods. We could argue that it would be fairer to put such revenue earning ideals onto income tax (ie: direct taxation) as it is inherently linked to an ability to pay but you'll not get the great and the good to do this because that is unpopular with the population and would be a vote loser at election time. (The opposition would be pointing fingers and screaming 'Look, this lot are the party of high taxation!!!').

Indirect taxation is easier to hide, folk are less inclined to notice it in the first place (or recognise it as a tax at all) especially these days as the sheeple dumb down. Also, because of this, it's easy to raise the rate of these taxes again, without too much fuss - imagine what the outcry would be if they put up income tax.

It will only get worse sadly.

I see that differently.

In the space of 30 years, we have anywhere in the First World (this is by no means restricted to the UK) allowed a self-declared elite to establish itself, and succumbed to their tyranny without the slightest resistance whatsoever. The end result we see now, is a global fascist and criminal regime micro-managing every aspect of our lives, and it will take some doing to get rid of it again and return to sanity. And with the latter, I mean the old system, when public servants served the public (which is us, not them) and governments did what the populations told them to do, and not the other way around, as it's done today.

Don't start the revolution without me!

You are saying this like it's a bad thing.  Some of us work very hard at this.

I pretty much agree with all of what you say JM, except

I mean the old system, when public servants served the public (which is us, not them) and governments did what the populations told them to do, and not the other way around, as it's done today.

...I think I must have blinked and missed the time when this was true.

I'm revolting too, soon as I figure out exactly who against.  (Not you Mr Putin, obviously.)

Oh, and on behalf of my fellow citizens of the City and County of Swansea, can I please just disown the DVLA.  Nobody hates it more than us.

Apparently thousands work there, but you never meet a soul that admits to it.  I think it may be staffed by zombies who are never allowed outside the compound - come to think of it, there is quite a lot of evidence for this.

Against everyone trying to lure you into a polling station on 07-05 would be a good start.

Yes, good start, but am I allowed to include (for example) the BBC as well?  And anyone who ever says "I know my rights", or "you can't stop me it's a free country innit", or "something must be done", or "And I'm like, whatever"?

These are the real enemy.  And they are all around us.

Well it is next door to a crematorium.

True.  Spooky.

(If this is thread drift I apologise.)

Fucking hell, if someone is micro managing my life, they want sacked. I pissed on the dishes in the sink this morning.

Wot's next? Roads, I guess. Having paid through the nose for the privilege of owning and using roads over the decades, they will be successively privatised and we'll then be charged for the honour. We already pay for prescriptions, dentistry, eye stuff and so on - so more healthcare charges are no doubt v. likely.

The masses are already paying for wealthier people's home heating with the RHI - spend £25k on a heating system and the poor will pay for it plus a healthy tax-free profit; the benefits are just as good for 'business'. Through land subsidies we're all paying for food at prices well above the price it'd otherwise be as well as maintaining the land-owning classes in the way they have become used to.

Thing is, I'm no Labour-voting trot but it seems what MrsT started in an attempt to prevent this nation from being taken over by the World Bank has gone on and on without anyone stopping to think where it's leading.

Anyone have any idea what our EU/German leaders' DVLA is like and what happens if you accidentally forget to tax your car in Steinhöring?

Of course you are. Just take your telly and throw it out in the street, where it really belongs.

I wish 30 odd million households in the UK would follow suit.

The streets are in a bad enough condition as it is! All you need is an off switch.

No, I reckon this is exactly what the Off Topic forum is all about.....

(If this is too grumpy I apologise, but at least having all the politics in the open forum makes it easier to ignore)

Slightly off topic but Lambeth Council sent me a £90 fine for being photographed in a yellow box (what that has got to do with a local authority I do not know) plus a further £90 fine for not responding to the first notice sent by ordinary post (and not received).  So I paid up and complained (no response) so I sued them through the small claims court and have just got all my money back.

I am afraid that as they don't piss about, when you are in the right it is best not to piss about either.

But what an indictment on the society we live in where the motorist is the cash cow.

When's it kicking off? FFS don't say owt on Facesit, use the smoke signals.

DVLA is like area 51 - nobody knows who works there.

Or it is like people who worked in the poll tax offices - remember them? Nobody would ever admit to it.

I am rapidly thinking that it is better to have nothing - they cannot take what you dont have.

I shall travel by horsey horseless and make my clothes out of hemp.

Bollocks to the lot of 'em.

I get extremely pissed off that public services such as HMRC and the DVLA are run like business's. YOU ARE NOT. You are paid for by taxes paid by us, the public. I am not your "customer" (do I have a choice?) and you are not a business making profits for your share holders. What are now is a bloody disgrace, and no wonder no one admits to working for you. Both of you can fuck off. Rant over.

A good thing about owning your own property with its own parking is these thieving wastes of space cannot legally enter your property and clamp an untaxed car that you own.

Posted

It's a grey area - as I understand it they can clamp on a communal car park or the like but couldn't come onto a driveway of a house to clamp a car.

They can't clamp cars with no wheels on private land. Nor can they lift them if it's an obstructed lift. Nor can they leave without me jumping all over them. They can't even get out of their poxy camera van unnoticed,in the pissing rain at 3am to photograph my grubby black/silver Land Rover number plate because their ANPR system doesn't recognise it.... I went out wearing my dressing gown to ask why the operative was skulking around after midnight. I was told to mind my own business. Bearing in mind I was stood between him and his van, I then explained how him clambering between my vehicles at 3am looked a lot like someone trying to steal one of them, and my business was to keep my property safe at all costs, that he realised he wasn't winning. I didn't let him get to his van until he showed me official ID. I also took a photograph of HIS van and number plate, to which he told me that was illegal.... so I asked why then, if it was illegal, he could photograph mine. Strangely, he couldn't answer that one, and they have NEVER been back to my knowledge.  All because I had 3 vehicles registered on SORN. They were trying to catch me out by parking one on the street, untaxed. Yeah. Tax exempt vehicles that are in a thousand pieces each.... silly bastards.

where did you get that disc?

I made it up and printed it here http://www.discybusiness.co.uk/It should be purple (the sequence is red, blue, purple) but they only do red, blue and yellow. It looks a bit gash close up but it'll do in the absence of the one I've paid £230 for.

I have long been arguing its acceptable to piss in the dishwasher rather than try and stagger upstairs.

The dishwasher gets upset though.
