Where to buy cheap mineral engine oil?

Recommended Posts

My Astra Isuzu TD likes pissing synthetic oil out of wherever its pissing it out of - synthetic or semi synthetic is easy to get hold of, but I just need big standard stuff until I get the motivation to find the leak. Asda used to do a litre for £1 but no more :(

Tesco occasionally have offers on oil - I bought a load of 15W40 mineral oil last year for 2 quid for a 2 litre can.  They don't seem to have anything cheap at the moment though.

Costco sell Chevron part synthetic for just over £2 a litre if you buy the 20 litre drum

B&m sometimes stock gulf for around £10 for 5L.

The days of buying "formula 1" 20W/50 for £2.99 are long gone.

Euro Car FAIL were selling something silly, like 10L or 15L for £10 (Don't ask me what grade)

Was some time ago mind.

And B&Q have this

£10.98 for 4.5 litres. Otherwise Halfords tend to knock their stuff out dirt cheap at Christmas and Bank Holidays so their own Mineral oil will probably be around a tenner for 4 litres.

There will always be a trade centre somewhere doing a crazy cheap deal but unless you are in the club, us mere mortals have to rely on the high street.

^ That's hard to beat, but being a bumpkin, there's no Homebase near here.

This is the Morrissons VALU stuff at £10 for 5l.

You know your car has made it into shite territory when it's on an el cheapo oil can. X Types all round.

Holy crap, I think I remember this stuff - plain white plastic can with red writing on it?  But £2.99 seems expensive, if memory serves - it was £2.50/gall !!!!! (From my fav motor factors in Maidstone - 4U2FIT).

My old Chevette leaked more than the Torrey Canyon so I used to keep it supplied with Homebase 20/50 which used to cost £2.99 for a gallon, but that was back in 1992. Duckhams Q used to be a fiver as I recall....

Do Homebase not offer online delivery? If not, for those who can't get to Homebase, there is always this decent enough but slightly more expensive option:

I am sure I have seen this for a tenner locally

I also suggest giving Costco a try, assuming you have a card to get in. Oils and other bits always at a good price.

Fairly sure you can use their website without needing to be a member so get the stuff delivered perhaps?

0w20 will simply go straight through onto the floor as soon as I put it in.

I bought 4l of 20w40 from Tesco for £12. Asda used to do basic 2l white bottles for £1!

I buy oil from the garage that services my car, I take down my 5 litre can & he fills it up for a few quid in the tea box.

No idea what it really costs, but it must be pennies when he buys the stuff in a 500 litre drum.

I've done this for years.

0W20? I'm not surprised it's pissing out, Google says it's for low friction and low temperature applications.

Buy a 205l drum from a factors and they'll deliver it for you, something about not letting a customer take it knowing it'll be transported in the boot of an estate car or whatever. It sometimes prices drop below £250 for 10w40 semi or mineral 15w40.

I've not put 0w20 in it, just replying to the recommendation. The problem is the oil is too thin, I found thicker oil leaks less (until I get it fixed). I'd happily put 50w50 in if that was possible. It doesn't need semi synthetic or fully synthetic.

I've used the 'stop leak' stuff, which is just really thick engine oil (that's all it is) , and it seems to help.

50w50? A bit on the thin side once hot...

If I filled my dolly 1300 with 40w70 it might actually stay in the engine for more than 60 miles... In the unlikely situation it managed to get that far before exploding.

I'm currently buying Millers Classic 20w50 at £28 for 5L!

Eurocarparts 10/40 semi is about £28 for 20 litres with an account.  You don't need any fancy reasons to open an account, just ask 'please can I open an account'.

I don't know what semi synthetic is but I suspect it is mineral plus 0.000001% synthetic or something.

Seems to work ok.

The only way you'll get cheaper is to use your mates oil after changes.....

I'm sure fiat or their oil people used to do a 20w60 oil . Not cheap tho
