TR6 Daily Driver..............Update 15/12/06

Evenin all.
So, I'm having a good look round this before doing anything stupid.....like letting her use it for going to work in. Done a bit of digging,,,,, body off resto in 2004, since then it's done 1200 miles, not been out of the garage for the last few years.
As mentioned in news thread, the rolling frame looks a 9.5 out of 10. Then they rushed the body, the panels don't line properly at all. This means the body will have to come back off then cut and re-jigged..........bummer...............not sure if I can be arsed with a daily.
Anyhoos

Looks to have had some real money spent on that.......shame body not so good but looks fine in the pics.

Certainly nice enough to run around in........I wouldn't want something too perfect personally as I think I'd be scared to use it enough to enjoy.

That's my excuse anyway.

Looks very nice. Shame they did a good job on the underside then rushed the rest though.

The panel fit was crap when they were new so I wouldn't worry too much about it. I see your car has carbs I thought they all had that wonderfully reliable fuel injection. Prices are well on the up over here for these now.

That looks perfect underneath! (Time for the ultimate anti-rust wax surely) Much more important than perfect on top; the flaky panel fit is a feature of every body on trellis chassis Triumph I have ever seen.

I have no personal experience of these but have been told by several TR fanciers that those sliding spline driveshafts and always-useless lever arm dampers are responsible for "demanding handling" of the bump oversteer sort.

Fuel injection not fitted to US models.

Posted

Weren't the injected models banned in the USA 'cos they were filthy, stinky smog monsters? The ones you guys got were really called TR250 with Stromberg carbs.

Posted

^^ WHS,  US spec TR6 had carbs (104bhp), although was called TR6.

TR250 was the US version of TR5

Autoshite and "body off restos" go together like Tony Blair and socialism.

To be fair, it does look solid.

Thanks for the positive comments chaps. TBH I'm quite pleased with this for what I paid.

and a missing bolt. Evidently it was there once, wonder where that's gone.

Looking like it's had a minor shunt. Will investigate further.........don't see damage anywhere.

OK folks..............list of things so far:

Wipers packed up.........Don't know yet.

Front indicators stopped flashing............hmmm...crap wiring probs.

Clutch slave fooked.............oil everywhere.......Seals gone.................more work

All coolant hoses fooked............understandable ...will replace

Done about 40 miles testing in it so far and it goes like a scalded cat. Many grins.

Very nice indeed.

I recognise that front suspension / brake set up as its was lifted by Reliant and used (with a combined shock/spring assembly) on the Scimitar for many years.

Yesterday i had an enjoyable few hours sat outside legs crossed stripping and checking my trunnions and replacing my top hat bushes etc.

You cant beat a bit of old skool engineering.

A bit of an update, this proved to be a bit too much for SWMBO, so I've been using it as my daily driver on and off for the last 12 months or so. A couple of days ago the left front started to rub on full lock, immediate investigation started.

Hmmm, this don't look right for starters.

CIMG1528_zps6g0xh3t4.jpg

At first I thought top or bottom joint, or a knackered bushing, but after much prying and rocking I couldn't find any play. Time to look elsewhere, then I spotted this.

CIMG1529_zpsdzphw5on.jpg

Bent and torn wishbone mounting bracket. I suppose this is what happens when you drive a 45 year old car like a hooligan. It's an engine out job, then some grinding and weld a new bracket on. I'm not dragging a load of gear back home to do this in the garage, so off to the workshop it goes.

OOH I'm a bit late just spotted this.

Yes I do have 4 stands, but from memory I think 2 of them were under something else.

Thirty-five, or so, years ago my then boss turned up at work one day in one of these, in that lovely French Blue, it was his mid-life crisis car which he had bought after, we subsequently discovered, his wife had kicked him out. It did make a nice noise, but even though it wasn't that old was already showing some rust on every seam.

Brilliant motor, I'd love one of these. Totally not AS though ;)

Right in center of pic above braded hose, where you will just see one of two attaching studs in the middle of two brackets............that gap is the result of fractured metal.

LoL oh it is.........clunky drive train, crap brakes, crap electrics, oil leaks as standard because leather seals in diff etc. etc............Top half of table shite maybe, but definitely shite.

Anyway, I've sacked it off today because I can't be arsed. Play starts first thing Monday morning.

Edit: It's hotter than Satans goolies here at the mo too.......105f.

I'm still not sure I can see it. Is it at the top of the upside down U bracket or to the left of that, the bit with the bolt through it that we can see the nut on? Anyway, good luck with the welding. I've always liked the TR4 through TR6  models. I guess yours is TR$.

Sounds like an authentic 1970's BL experience to me. Do you have Supercover?

Ah, psh. Try being attacked by brown widows in 120 degree heat whilst sweating into your eyes because it's so humid the sweat doesn't evaporate. Get on with it, man!

Looks nice enough though. Good buy

In BL circles this is known as "factory fit".

Well I never did find time to get this in the shop and fix it, so after a couple of weeks outside in the desert sun I took it back home and shoved it in the garage under the "things to do" list.

That was months ago, she says I'd better get on with it or else........So here we go.

My spring compressor is far too big for this, but I can use its screw and make a couple of clamp plates.

This is the problem, can't see it in the pick but the bracket is all fractured on top and between the holes
