MO's UMM, what have I done thread! front end dismantling

Today's episode of Sesame Street is brought to you by the letters T and R, the words trim and rust and the number 8. Also taking part are a drill, screwdriver, ratchet and 10mm socket, and molegrips.

Big Bird had left for the day so the cookie monster set to work.

Screwdriver out, he attacked the side trim, all held on by chromed phillips headed self tappers.

T is for Trim, there are four pieces of trim per side and all hide the letter R - for rust.

Before the cookie monster started attacking the trim, the UMM looked like this

part way through, the UMM looked like this!

It was then that the cookie monster noticed the R - for rust - there was rather a lot, but was he worried, no, as he had a coffee and a cookie in the house to have once he'd finished!

So he set to work again and did the other side!

He wondered how this R for rust could have appeared on both sides of his UMM?

Ah, he said! That's where his mud pies had gone!

Maybe there were more on the other side?

mmmmmmmm

coooooookkkkkkkiiiieeeeeeeeee

TOday's Sesame Street has starred Cookie Monster, Big Bird, the letters R & T, the words trim and rust and plastic trim panels. How many plastic trim panels, Count? One trim, that's one trim, two trim, two trim, three trim, we haven't finished counting, four trim, and one more makes five, six is another and then we have seven and the final one is eight, the number of the day!

Umm has sad face  :-(

I like that though despite never having heard of the things before now.

I cannot decide whether I want the trims back on (apart from to get throught the MoT, of course. I'm beginning to tot up the welding and I amd going to have a crack at some of it. Nothing is difficult - and I reckon it's two days of a professional to do it all, if I do the strip down to gain access.

What does everyone think?

no trim -

or just wheelarch trim and none on body side -

or full trim

Posted

One vote for keeping the wheel arch trim, stuff the rest.

Posted

I like the look of the wheel arch trim, undecided which I prefer though.

Put the full trim back on one side, then just the arches on the other and see which you prefer.

Posted

My vote is to put all the trim back on if you're not going mud-plugging in it.

More importantly, what farmer-spec chemical spill has your hooter hoovered up to cause you to dribble out such a nonsensical diatribe?

four nuts and pull off

I tend to celebrate like that when stuff goes right, too

No Trim, trim is trying to kill UMM.

Weld thick plate in place of rust and paint it black - original look retained, rust traps eliminated, UMM is stronger. WIN WIN WIN

the trim is a deluxe option - as was the knackered headlining I pulled out and burnt. I'm going to keep the carpets but that's it, I think!

I did buy an arc-activated welding helmet earlier today - and have to go practice on some 2mm steel now.

In today's other UMM news, I spent a couple of hours in Worcester picking up some UMM parts from an ex-dealer, who still has an UMM Transcat, along with a Toyota FJ land Cruiser and a Willys Jeep from WW2.

I found in the pile of UMM bits  from at least two UMMs that he has scrapped, numerous bits, as well as some treasures from his new stock.

I picked up a brake master cylinder brand new, plus some lights, as well as a bonnet with no lacquer peel, two doors, a rear door window to replace the perspex block that is there now, along with new switchgear, a good dash (better than my current one and I can now paint one while keeping one in the car), a steering cowl (as mine is in poor condition), plus a set of station wagon side windows.

There's lots of used running gear and mechanical bits so I need another trip up sometime soon.

Well, today has been productive. Starter motor hasn't come back yet - will be here Tuesday, so I spent part of today playing inside the garage and did this!

The first start up since 2000.

After I had that joy, I decided to play UMM.

So, I had a precariously placed glass rear window needing somewhere to go and a horrible piece of perspex needing removed.

It involved a wash.

A removal.

Then, I thought, how does that bonnet come off?

how terrible is it to keep going into the garage, smoking it out with 2T, and starting up my Messerschmitt?

In other news, I have a welder coming Thursday to give me a quote to do the front end of the UMM.

He's no stranger to them as his uncle owned one in the 90s. So, he's keen to get the gig. And the more I delve into the horsey-named Portuguese 4x4 (or in the case of Chris's one currently -  a 3x3), the more I think I am going to end up keeping it.

One of the track rods I acquired brand new in Worcester actually is the missing one I need for the steering - so that's a hurrah! And a saving of money!

Starter motor is rebuilt and will be back with me tomorrow.

Posted

So are you going to put the trims back on or not? I vote full trims (or did I miss that?)

I think it will be trims back on but much better rust protection.

I've decided to pay for the front end welding and have a go at the rear end myself.

My parts order of new cables is heading from Somerset and I have to do a change of owner from the Mrs to me, change the insurance from off road to on road and tax the little devil. Give me eight weeks and this will be road legal for the first time since 2000.

Oh that is lovely! Bet you can't wait!

Posted

strangely, I think I am going to be just as excited when the UMM starts up for the first time in my ownership too.  But, yes, can't wait - my neighbours won't know what's hit them as I go ding ding ding down the village!

third wiper is coming!

I am thinking that the UMM needs painted and am after a nice colour to paint it in. I am going for the coach enamel route as it is easier for an idiot like me to apply, especially as I have nowhere to paint it apart from the driveway.

So, thoughts, please, on a new colour.

My thoughts are side trims put back on and cleaned to a decent black.

Front bumper and valance to be black, and the plastic trim cleaned to black too.

Land Rover Limestone for the rest of the body.

A bit like this!

p8194553_0ab.jpg?x=1427224633

p19fgabbrk14vfipq17gc13288jb4.jpg

When I can afford it, I'll get the Alter II 4x4 graphics back on too. All hinges, etc picked out in black

Anyone else's thoughts on colour?
