I need a new project - purchase made, awaiting collection!

I've finished the winter work that was planned for my E23, the Escort is now sold and I'm just today stripping the final parts from my breaking 190E.

Im bored and I want something else now.

I've been keeping an eye on the eBay thread on here as well as doing my own eBay/Gumtree/Car and classic/Forum searches and so far it's been futile.

I'm fancying something a bit different to my normal choices at the moment. I'm very much into BMWs/Mercs/Jags so I'm avoiding looking at them really.

It can't be anything with mega scene tax as I am on a budget. I'm also aiming for something which is on the road at the moment so I can get some use out of it, a rolling project would be fine, or something that needs very little work I'm not fussed.

Budget is up to £1500, I'm not arsed about fuel consumption. I would rather something older, but would consider upto 1998ish if it was something worth having.

I like 4-door saloons. I also like boxy 4-door saloons. That would tick some boxes but I did say I wanted to be different this time so an estate or a little hatch would be a consideration. It does need more than 2 seats though as it would have to carry 2 kids at times.

Hit me with some suggestions/stories/cars for sale you have found on the net?

I do have my eye on a car at the moment but I'm still going through the 'should I, shouldn't I' process.

A friend of mine has a '71 Humber Sceptre for sale that needs finishing, most of the hard work has been done...

1993 Mercury Sable.  It's awaiting a sensor at the moment, after which, it'll hopefully be fit to use again.  Before sensor failure it coped admirably with two or three longish trips, including collection.  It should again, once sorted.  At the moment I wouldn't even take it round the corner, but the part is on the way.

Projects don't get finished do they?

I have lots of project cars, trouble is I would want it back when it is done!

I'm putting far too little effort into selling the Xantia.  Four door estate well within budget and immediately usable with a few niggles to resolve, could keep you interested for a bit.

That budget would get you a tidy Toledo, 1500TC or Dolomite.

4 door boxy saloons, £1500. Volvo 240/260 series- I'd like a 265 but rare now.

Maybe a Japanese saloon, Legend, Crown. Not much else I fancy in that price bracket that wont be rusty/unreliable. Another grand gives you a lot more choice.

Agreed that another grand would open up more options, but I'm pretty set on my budget really. My Jag, E23 and 190E all cost me either £1000 or close to that and they aren't rust buckets, it's not a daily as that's what the Jags for and I'm therefore I'm happy to tinker with teething issues etc as if I don't have the work sorted by bedtime Sunday I'm not worried that I'm without transport the following day for work etc.

Boxy Jap stuff really does tick boxes, however I'm starting to look at some old French and Italian stuff - cars I've never really ever considered...

How about one of these I have 2 coming fingers crossed so should have something in budget and you won't get a more fun* project

I kinda' want the Xantia. I mean I have absolutely no use for an estate, but I like it.

There IS a lot of tasty chod on the continent for that kinda price if you can live with lhd and do the collekshun.

I'm just fed up with rust and the cost/time of repairing it so all the 60s/70s euroshite is either too expensive or too rusty now.

my next project is going to be either another Ovlov or something very large with an undeciferable handbook and a V8

Two further possibilities-

Rovah 800 series.

Lesser known US shite....AMC appeals to me, even 6 pot Ramblers and later oddballs like the Concord and Spirit.

Looking forward to lunchtime - nice leisurely drive through some local countryside to go and look at the first car that's jumped out at me. It is just a viewing, not a 'must buy' - so we will see.

Can I just refer to this comment previously made... Which I kind of snubbed off..,

I'm viewing a 48 year old Rover that looks like shit and has had plenty of welding already. I take back my previous 'snub' and agree that I'm probably going to end up with a turd on the driveway.

More later!

I made it. I'm now relying on three things:

1) I'm actually in the right place (from the sellers description)

2) He will turn up

3) That my mate Steve gets the truck going. He was meeting me here straight from a job, I passed him conked out about 5 miles back with his head under the bonnet. Like any self respecting mate/employer, I carried on and left him.

Oooh it's quite exciting isn't it?!

Timothy Taylor's Landlord says - I'm oot!

For the price, surprisingly not bad and fairly solid. Alas, I didn't get 'the feeling' which therefore means it's not for me.

I fixed the truck within 2 minutes of getting back to it too. Bloody amateurs.

The hunt continues.

It sounds like you're going through what i am at the moment, I don't know about you buy cars that are £1500 now are the same cars that were £1000 only a couple of years back that you wouldn't have looked twice at, It's all got very expensive.

After my experience yesterday I'm a little battle scarred now but hopefully you'll have more luck than me!

Agreed. I'm very impatient as well - I hate all this scouring the net trying to find something. Generally I see a car, decide I'm having it and just go and buy it within the next few days. I've got money burning a hole from the Escort sale that is purely in 'the car fund'.

I'm finding though that on my searches I can't find ANYTHING that suits my needs yet last week I could have spent my budget 5 times over, but I wasn't looking.

Shame about the Granny though, looked nice in the pics and nothing worse than a wasted day!

Er, exactly.....All the cars that were sub £1k and which I spurned a few years back are the ones I'm looking at now.

Like the fat bird with the hairy arms you wish you'd kept in touch with.

she`s pretty good about my cars, apart from the Fiat 126 that was on the lawn all summer.....

^^^At least a bonsai tree could hide a 126.

its a very small lawn. beer and ebay decided it for me...
