Yesterday evening I had spotted a Facebook post about a possible meeting of Brackley Classic car club so I decided on such a warm dry evening to give it a go. It was on and a chap turned up on spec talking about his 1935 Daimler 15HP Tourer. Then he changed has line from next month to I will go home now and get it.

Well if you don't ask, you don't get. Can I get a lift to your home so I can have a ride back in the Daimler please? Yes I got my wish that turned a pleasant evening into a special evening.

How does it compare to the rolls?

Evenley? Rode through there last night.

Yes The Red Lion Evenley.

It is the Brackley Classic Car Club monthly meeting, 2nd Tuesday of each month. There is also part of the group who are a 2CV/A-series group.

I may well go again to the September meeting on the 9th.

The interior front width on the Roll is not generous but the Daimler is even narrower.

Ride feels about the same.

Daimler engine does not have the torque of the Rolls, 2.0 six cylinder while the Rolls is 3.6 six cylinder.

Daimler gearbox is an odd sensation being pre selector.

Both cars cruise at 50mph.

Both cars steering is affected by road surfaces.

On a beautiful summer evening the convertible Daimler was great for a local trip out.

I was invited to a local village classic car parade today. Not a village I know very well but I am sure I spotted a couple of landmarks a couple of times each!

It all started in a Coal yard........

@LightBulbFun this is the dead bulb from the Rolls Royce tail light. I have been looking for a new replacement bulb as Slowsilver only had one, but can only find 5w versions for sale not the 6w that was fitted.

The question is do they still make a 6w 12v twin contact?

I will change them both to 5w rather that pay specialist bulb prices, but would rather stick to 6w.

you will only find 5W because thats what the 6W bulb became, at some point in time a lot of the 6W's got re-rated to 5W

if you look at old stop and tail lamps for example, they used to be 6W/21W now they are 5W/21W for example, see this excerpt from an AEI Mazda Catalog of 1964

image.png.68df24a5e8bb0460cfb6eff1ff4eec22.png

the tail bulb one for your Rolls Royce would be Lucas/catalog number 209

Screenshot2025-08-17at13_21_20.png.c862382ab488645058427b9127784e52.png

further to that, here is two more catalog extracts one from a Thorn 1968 catalog the other from a 1969/1970 catalog and again notice how for the same Lamp Reference number 209, note how the wattage is re-rated from 6W to 5W

so to answer your question, they dont make 6W ones anymore, they have not for a very long time! your best bet is hunting for old stock at Autojumbles or old bulb-kits etc

The 35/35w headlights are so weak on my 1933 Rolls I don't like driving it at night, you can see where you are going in the dark, but oncoming head lights blind me. I met a man last week with a 1935 Daimler who tells me he found halogen conversion bulbs that make all the difference. Unfortunately I did not take the details, anybody else aware of them?

These are what I have now, well not blown!

If they're standard round sealed beams, you can get H4 conversions for many cheaps.

We put a pair in the Land Rover and they were something silly like £35 for the pair, off eBay or similar.

They're plastic rather than glass, a wee bit shinier than sealed beams but not too incongruous.

Then, of course, once you have H4 bulbs in it, you could get some Osram Nightbreakers or something.

The conversion headlights for my classic Mini were cheaper than Lucas sealed beam units, however not available for this one!

I was going to say if thats not failed already then its not long for this world, then I realised that one *is* the failed one you gave me :)

I have not really seen halogen replacement for those, tho this website talks about them, but has no listing for them

https://www.holden.co.uk/p/12v_bulb_double_contact_36_36w

Quote

We also have available a Halogen replacement bulb LLB171/H35 to replace this one and give better light.

they do have a listing for 6V in halogen but no 12V that I can see

https://www.holden.co.uk/p/6v_halogen_bulb_double_contact_35_35w

maybe ask if they have the above in 12V?

I dont know if you replaced both bulbs when the one above failed, but if not I would inspect the remaining old bulb to see what condition its in and if its blackened, I just replace that bulb with a fresh one, and make sure there is good voltage at its lamp holder, that would probably help brighten things up, as well as making sure the reflector surfaces and inside of the glass are clean etc

(I think halogen bulbs would look wrong in something like your Rolls Royce anyhow)

Looks like a B15d base,

assuming so then:-

12 Volt SBC BA15d 60/55 watt double filament HALOGEN Headlamp bulb

image.jpeg.3a52d4c96779b31bc8c521e005489883.jpeg

Are you sure the Rolls Royce's electrical system is up to drawing twice as much current for the headlamps ?

Wiring, switches and the generated supply all need thinking about.

12 Volt 45/35W SBC BA15D base Headlamp bulb

image.jpeg.c664b4c0f7a6bd7ffa7ec3cbe9658888.jpeg

Gives you a slightly brighter main beam.

Or if you can use an LED in a Rolls Royce without Charles Rolls rising from his grave...

(I think Henry Royce would have approved).

The owner of this Austin 12/4 told me he ran LED's,  and they looked OK on the vehicle. Would they be suitable ?
