Dirt cheap to run shite - suggestions?

A Kia shuma, very cheap now, about as much as two pints and a fish supper to buy. Insurance cheap, mpg not bad but tax is high. Love mine, mazda running gear but they do like to rot a bit/lot.

A Mk6 Escort can be many things, but cheap to run isn't one of them.

For the last 8 years I have been getting my old man mk6 escorts to run because of how I rated them to be cheap to run, and easy to repair, when one looked like it was too much welding for an m.o.t I replaced it with another, other than the odd service and lower arm replacement they have cost nowt to run, i have started him on mk3 mondeos now because of their availability

Dirt cheap to run?

You need a 106 diesel.

They cost less than £300.

They do 60mpg (genuinely).

They are in the cheap tax bracket.

They resist rust.

The diesels have the longest-ratio box, so are comfortable on the motorway.

Scrapyards are full of them.

The plastic bits inside break and fall off, further increasing the economy and space available.

I'm with 500tops. They don't come much cheaper than a EP91 Starlet. Low insurance group, cheap parts and they are quite nippy too. You can pick one up for under £500 which would last you years still.

I could get on with a Starlet. I've always liked them and I could fit one outside no bother. No idea why I didn't think of one!

I can also see one's self in a Kia Shuma. They're tragic, not in a Sterling way, in an elasticated slacks bought from the back pages of the Daily Mail way.

Now that is small indeed. Were these proper Kei cars?

city rover? if you can cope with been seen in one, its all old pug underneath, or ford fiesta, one of them from the year 200-ish with ohv engines, if that is you can find one still with its back wheel arches and sill attached?

A car I detest on principle, but as a daily to use and abuse it's probably not a bad steer to be fair. And if it breaks I would scrap it, and watch them feed though one of those giant shredders. Slowly.

Ooooooh I'm liking the sound of an Escort MK6 - dismal! Could just about get away with on size wise I think.

Mate, my Mk6 needs a head gasket, is MoTed until September and yours for a mere 70 earth pounds.

Trust me, it's dismal

I may be in touch at some stage then! Not that I'm complaining, but it must be worth more than 70 quid? Or is it that dismal?

that's what the bridge offered me. there is a thread elsewhere highlighting what went wrong with it.

Other than that, it's just plain dismal.

PM me if you want as tel number to chat, it isn't going anywhere

Did you give a reason why you're not driving home from Bolton in a Citroen ZX with Sporty Shite's name on the V5 right now?

Cheers Taff :) Like I said I won't be buying anything for a while yet, but it's good to know it's out there!

Any mid-to-late 90s Nissan, N15 Almeras are cheap, the engines have chain cams for maximo maintenance-free motoring, the inside isn't too bad and lots is available as they do like to rust and many are broken.

the 1.4 is suitably capable up to about 80mph should you be so inclined, cheap tax, cheapo to insure and very easy to work on. probably the easiest car I've ever owned to service.

Logos? No, they're not. If memory serves they run a 1.2-litre engine (way too large) and they're wider and longer than regulations allow.

My G11 Charade isn't a Kei.

Peugeot 306 d turbo with the XUD lump. May be a bit bigger than what you wanted, but dirt cheap, nicely frisky and superb handling. By modern standard they are a small car and easy to park. Probably all the car you need for day to day transport, they're ace.

Another vote here for a Starlet.

MIL needed a new motor recently. It needed to be small, reliable, cheap to run, tax and insure (and not utterly dismal just in case I ever had to drive it). A starlet was the first thing that sprang to mind and luckily I picked up a '98 low mileage years mot example for 400 of your finest English.

She loves it and I don't completely hate driving it either. :D

MX5, small,cheap, reliable,fun.

Ok,maybe most old ones need regular sparkly stick attention but as a stablemate to a luxurious quality waft-mobile, I can can think of nothing more suitable.

Mk4 Fiesta, parts are extremely cheap. Similarly Focus mk1. Go for the 1.6 litre though, ignore the 1.8, little quicker than 1.6 but more to fuel/tax

Two options:

1. Peugeot 306 XUDT or the very very different Citroen ZX XUDT. Buy Sporty's if still available. DELIVERY SERVICE AVAILABLE BUT NOT YET

2, Daihatsu Charade G11.

This is my current looking for. The agony of choice.

Daewoo Mtiz

Daihatsu Charade

Hyundai Amica

Hyundai Atos

Hyundai Getz

Kia Picanto

Subaru Justy

Suzuki Alto

Suzuki ignis
Suzuki Swift
Toyota Starlet

Toyota Yaris

Comments welcome and opinions and horror stories also.

The logo was a 1.3 and a similar size to the starlet . Good little cars both of them
