Uncle Jimmy Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 Try the Onatsuka Terrapin V6 diesel. Lacquer Peel 1
Tayne Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 You can get a v8 xc90 can't you?Not in this country.
Lacquer Peel Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 They're very rare in the UK but they were sold here.http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/car-reviews/38002/volvo-xc90-v8-se-lux
NorfolkNWeigh Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 They really hold their money too, surprisingly. A bloke round the corner from me has got a red R Line 4.4 V8 and I think it looks great, the only XC90 I've seen that doesn't look like it should be a Kath Kidston special edition.A bit like this Asimo 1
skattrd Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 Hmm, is the V8 more powerful than the twin turbo T6?
NorfolkNWeigh Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 Yes 300 odd compared to 270bhp, but those in the T6 must be Shetland ponies as they don't feel any quicker than the 185 bhp D5s . Thirstiest car of evah though, Mrs N borrowed her sister's T6 to use on holiday 10 years ago , it was worse than the V8 Disco or Turbo R we left at home .
cort16 Posted February 3, 2015 Posted February 3, 2015 LPG'd Murano's seem quite common. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201501120116214/

Cheggers Posted February 4, 2015 Author Posted February 4, 2015 Thanks all for the input, I hadn't considered the XC90. Just to refine my requirements, I don't want a diesel and aren't too concerned about fuel consumption (hence the appeal of the Murano). I do like driving X5s, but I'm really struggling to get over my negative perception of their owners.
skattrd Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 Meh, just get an X5 and sod what people think. steve_earwig, tooSavvy, Cheggers and 1 other 4
cort16 Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 Aye fuck it just get an X5 if that's what you want who cares? Make sure to root out a sport and not an SE as they're much nicer inside etc. You should be able to get a really nice one for your budget as the petrols don't hold their value as well as the diesel one.Â
NorfolkNWeigh Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 Oh,if we're going for the 'Fuck what everybody thinks' option.Might I suggesthttp://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201501300567382/sort/priceasc/quicksearch/true/usedcars/postcode/mk109aa/make/porsche/page/1/onesearchad/used%2Cnearlynew%2Cnew/radius/1500/model/cayenne?logcode=pOnly 340 BHP I'm afraid you'll need to spend another couple of grand for the 450 bhp Turbo. With petrol down to a quid a litre ,it's only a matter of time ( and a decent 4.5 manual turning up) before Mrs N is parking one of these amongst the Priuses at The Council offices. alf892 and cort16 2
cort16 Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 I've driven a couple of those chubby porkers and the v6 is shite but the v8 is pretty peppy. I once saw one give birth to a Nissan Juke. FACT! Lacquer Peel 1
steve_earwig Posted February 4, 2015 Posted February 4, 2015 Wot they said (hmm, no up arrow on this keyboard) if an X5 floats your boat get one and wear a ski mask, you might have to use some WD to get the indicators working. Or a porker even, get a big "my other car is a Reliant Rialto" sticker made up for the back. cort16 1
Cheggers Posted February 7, 2015 Author Posted February 7, 2015 Having spent a very happy day test driving, I've decided to chuck an extra couple of grand in the pot and go for a Cayenne (once I've shifted the 159) NorfolkNWeigh, skattrd, nacho man and 1 other 4
dollywobbler Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 Excellent. Question is, does a big, hefty Porka with a gopping face count as Autoshite? I'm certainly interested to see how you get on with it.
Cheggers Posted February 7, 2015 Author Posted February 7, 2015 Excellent. Question is, does a big, hefty Porka with a gopping face count as Autoshite? I'm certainly interested to see how you get on with it.I think of it as an Autoshite public service, buying cars before they hit the AS prime time, so the rest of you know just what you'll be letting yourselves in for when they start appearing on Gumtree  I know I'm fortunate in being able to indulge in shit like this, but I like to think I'm still a part of things around here. skattrd 1
dollywobbler Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 In some ways, I reckon a Cayenne will out-shite stuff like the 924. That was designed to be a cheap Porka, whereas the Cayenne will just have the depreciation curve of a big Citroen. Or Jimmy Saville pyjamas. It's the 928 of the modern era, where you can bag something genuinely impressive for sod all because folk are terrified of a big bill. One could probably be written off by needing a set of tyres before too long. tooSavvy and cort16 2
the judge Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 You can get jimmy saville pj's??? In kid sizes too? tooSavvy 1

One could probably be written off by needing a set of tyres before too long. That's a very fair assessment, DW. However, a bit like the 928, I do believe if you're prepared to stomach the running costs, it's a hell of a lot of car for the money and fits my needs well enough for me to justify owning one. I know the ongoing costs will be heavy, but the 159 has cost me more than its purchase price in repairs over the last 18 months, and while it's a nice car, it's certainly doesn't have the "sparkle" of a Porsche (or big Citroen). I also know there's little scope for DIY repairs on the Cayenne, but with another project taking up a lot of spare time, I'm having to shelve my shite-fettling urges for a wee while anyway. As for my investment skills, I'm typing this while lying in bed looking at my genuine Rolf Harris painting hanging on the opposite wall...And you thought Citroens knew how to depreciate! skattrd, dollywobbler and The Moog 3
cort16 Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 A guy at my work has a diesel one. Diesel porsche surely sacrilidge?
Tayne Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 I'm curios about the Cayenne as well, have you read John Glynn's running reports in Ferdinand magazine?  I'm also slightly curious about the Rolf Harris piece. There's one sitting in the back room of a local gallery (thankfully not owned by them) and I quite like it.It's about twice the length of my living room so no cheeky offers from me.
Asimo Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 Cayenne with the Golf VR6 engine and a manual box is shitey enough for me: can one be found without cow-peel seats though? *The stupid roof bars can be removed easily, unless you need to carry a pineapple.
Cheggers Posted February 8, 2015 Author Posted February 8, 2015 What engine did you test drive? The non-turbo 4.5 V8. Is the 3.2 as underpowered as I suspect it might be?
cort16 Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 Yes most of the energy from the fuel just goes into making noise. It's pretty grim I think it's the vw 3.2v6 given the Cayenne is 80% Toureg. I didn't think much of the interior its very similiar to the interior of the 996, which feels a bit old school and shiny. I wonder if the v8 bears any relation at all to the one in the 928?

EssDeeWon Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 My neighbour got an 04' Cayenne before Christmas, it then disappeared for about 3 weeks until last week while they had a porky courtesy car, I haven't been nosey enough to ask but I didn't spot any body damage so I am guessing something went seriously wrong with it.
Ghosty Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 A Cayenne for £6k? I'll suggest that to the mother!
