Driving gloves. Anyone still wear these?

As per title really. I've never had a pair or known anyone who did.

 

Used to see a fair few giffers round my way sporting them in the 90's but not recently.

 

Is there any reason why one would wear such a thing?

Sort of.

 

The reason for wearing them is they give better grip on the skinny steering wheels of old, not so much of an issue since manufacturers started fitting really chunky ones. Keep your hands warm too - heaters have got better since then as well.

I was prompted to post after watching Philip Glenister sporting a pair in "for the love of cars" whilst driving the Mini Cooper

I always carry some, and usually wear them in winter regardless of how good my heater is. I always feel calmer and less ruffled when wearing them. It's also comforting to know that you can commit violent assaults on irksome road users without leaving fingerprint evidence.

Yeah I really think they are car dependant. Doing the school run in the volvo wearing driving gloves would mark me out as a mental

Yeah I do, heater didn't work for ages and I keep forgetting that it does now. Fan only works on speed 4 though which drowns the radio out so the blowers stay off and heater dial stays on cold. Sometimes have to run it for a few seconds if the screen starting misting, though it's pretty good for staying clear.

I have some black leather ones which I used to wear when driving with no roof and they helped with cold / feeling.  But my MX5 had a wooden rimmed wheel, and anything which has a 'normal' squidgy plastic rim feels ridiculous through gloves.

I do wear a pair of black leather gloves in winter to drive even though my heaters are excellent, it's a habit that's stuck with me from years back

I do in this weather, although often take them off when the car is nice and toasty. But just ordinary leather gloves, not 'driving ones' like Partridges!

I have a pair. Beige/cream string net on back,leather brown palms. Use when it's cold in a morning but will become more of a giffer accessory in the metro. Don't know how old they are,but they where my mums and she passed on nearly 20 year back

My dad had a pair of brown leather driving gloves for at least 10 years before he died, and that was in 1986.  I still use them - when driving my mobility scooter  .

I have a pair of thin black leather string backed driving gloves.... somewhere! They are AWESOME! I think they are Paddy Hopkirk brand or somesuch, bought them back in the dark days of Minis and Triumph Spitfires with drafts and shit heaters.

 

Nowadays, I have no need as not only does my car have a heater, it has heated seats AND a heated steering wheel! To be honest, it feels bloody wierd and not all that nice, but I do like heated seats as they are getting me ready for my dotage when I piss myself at hourly intervals.
