Today - April Drive It Day

It's not that nice mate, there are others which are far nicer.

Mine goes and stops properly, but is covered in weird dents and scratches, the paint is specifically knackered, and has a whole host of quirks peculiar to an unrestored 33 year old Japanese car. Despite the plate, the VIN says it was built February 1993. It scrubs up OK, which is good.

I'm surprised you saw five, we don't have exact numbers but it's agreed generally that 249 came here between 1992 and 1996. The US got '1997 model year' SVXs but they were all built in late 1996.
There were SVX specialist dealers, but any Subaru agent could order one. Mine came from a garage in Wooten Wawen near Solihull (Andrew Burt): it wasn't an SVX specialist, but did advertise the Legacy RS on several occasions.

Were you at Rustival the other week? Was behind a silver SVX on the way out of the show (in an old corolla with fucked paint) and failed miserably to keep it in my sights through the backroads, I can't imagine there's too many of them about

That was me.

I wasn't near it much during the show as my mate and his Beetle were in the car park outside the museum itself; I went round with him.
Folk didn't seem that keen on it this time and I had to leave early owing to my second job. I tried to get out of the shift but the cover cancelled at the last minute.

At least it was a show it's allowed into.

Most places tell me to fuck off into standard parking despite the fact they'll happily allowed newer cars on to the field, including one show that knew full well standard parking was full and refused me entry just after letting a fucked, brush painted MG ZR in (with big, beaming smiles to boot).

And yes, I'm aware of FOTU (don't consider it 'unexceptional' in any way, despite various essays by flickr users). I also know that ECR would have it.

I don't really do shows with it as a result, as most places get the arse/don't know what it is/shows aren't really my thing any more.

I didn't get a chance to get a good look at it at the show unfortunately but it looked the part when zooming off into the distance, for what they are I really don't hear enough about them  especially compared to some of the old japanese stuff that the masses do fawn over.

I've had similar experiences at local shows and while I can vaguely understand the the old fellas at the gate not fancying letting the car with the fucked paint (that isn't a defender, fine if you just got off a shift in a local field apparently) into an explicitly all pre-2000 welcome show and just feigning ignorance about not realising it's on an L reg for ages it seems criminal to turn down an SVX of all things.

Keep hearing about ECR on here, really must get down there sometimes but I always forget to check when they're on.

There is one that lives in the next village to me with an SVX number plate. It very rarely seems to move, I think I can count on one hand the amount of times I've driven past in the last 8 years that it's not been parked on the drive. It's the only one I know of these days near me. And to be fair of those 5, it's entirely possible a couple of them were the same cars returning a year later for service, I just remember the colours now as it was 20 years ago!

I always thought 'SVX' personal plates cringeworthy.

That and the spoilers which look tacked on, like you'd pimped out a chest of drawers at Ripspeed.

Urgh.

I had a drive out in the Mercury to Sherburn Aero Club (at the back of the Motorist) always a nice laid back meet. Highlight cars where a Panhard Dyna Z and a mint Mazda 929 estate. Lots of cars turning up at the Motorist too.

Then changed the oil and spilled oil all over myself, after setting up for all potential spillages.

Agreed with @High Jetter,  quality photos too.

I recognise a few of those, I saw the Pony at my first proper visit to The Motorist a couple of years ago. I believe that 929 has had a fairly recent change in ownership, good to see it out and about.

Ha! Drove that 929 Estate when it was for sale at Stone Cold Classics in Oxfordshire.

It's had the easiest life of any 929 I know. It's spent more time at shows than it has out working. I seem to remember that the rear door cars still had cellophane protecting them.

Comfy, slow, torquey, and massive. A 505 will always be king of the estates for me, but the 929 is a very credible silver (lol at colour).

I’ve been mostly using this for tip runs and general daily use the last couple of weeks instead of the GT86, on Sunday it got a decent run out as I had a lot of things to do. I forgot it was drive it day. I was wondering why I’d seen so many people in older cars about. I’d say it counts as classic, being 23 years old (and about 15 years older than MGR ever planned for it to be). I keep blowing hot and cold on this car because it breaks every time I’m broke but then I go and drive it again and enjoy it a lot.
