AldridgePrior Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 Been kinda offered (from a local young female) a Ford Racing Puma. What`s the low down on them anybody? If I fired it away in a lock would it be worth anything a few years down the line? Big stupid spoiler (FF) on the back and the blue recaros. Opinions appreciated
Sudsprint Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 Great little super handling car. It will be in the line behind XRs etc to be worth real money, but then who saw the £50k 2 door MK1 Escort coming? AldridgePrior 1
twosmoke300 Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 A genuine racing puma is seriously rare and worth keeping . made with tickford iirc. Barry Cade, londonm, AldridgePrior and 1 other 4
Albert Ross Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 Let's hope the arches are in good order before you lay it up in the damp.
overrun Posted January 3, 2015 Posted January 3, 2015 Helped a mate repair a Cat C one of these, probably 7 years ago. They are a great drive. The wider track and diff turn a good car into a great car. He really struggled to get hold of a wing and front bumper. Parts are obviously even harder to get now. The royal blue Sparco Torrino alcantara is especially awkward to find - I know who has a load, NOS, though.Same goes for the Alcon front calipers. We fitted the shafts, arms and 'box and an engine to his mk5 Fiesta, too. If this one is in good nick and well priced, jump on it.Heed the advice about the arches, though. The Racing Puma has the potential to rout out worse than a standard arched car, due to the way Tickford clagged them on.
fairkens Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 I had one of these until I wrote it off, would have another in a heartbeat
beko1987 Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 Omnomnom I don't recognise it, check on project puma, see if its known. I don't think they suffer from forditis quite as much as normal pumas, some trim bits can be a bit unobtanium too. There were a few of these on the puma meet and drive I went to when I had mine, were nice but not much quicker than my 1.7, and I led the pack with a fucked clutch for some of the way, on the bits that were local to me (met at my local cinema car park, then at handy x everyone filed into l1, I timed the lights in a way only local knowledge can, fucked off down the bypass, through Marlow and over to Henley, which I knew very well, so we did some speeding...) One of those was driven by a fitty too iirc
Vince70 Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 A mate of my brothers had one for years and it didn't hang about and rot doesn't seem to be so much of an issue as on the standard cars. He bought his nearly new and put a remap on the car the first week he bought it and he did abuse the poor thing from day one but he never once had any problems with the engine and I think it was on about 140.000 miles when he sold it, so they seem tuff as old boots. I did remember going in the car though when he first bought it and even back then the Alcantara trim was wearing out on the steering wheel . He offered it to me a couple of years back for £1500 before he PXed it but I didn't have the money a the time and I would have just put it in my garage and used it as a ford scene tax retirement fund.
New POD Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 A genuine racing puma is seriously rare and worth keeping . made with tickford iirc. A mate of mine was a quality manager at Halewood when it built the jaguar X type, and it was still part of ford, and the staff could still buy Ford's on the cheap. Are you still keeping up with me ? Anyhowsup. One of his staff, a young engineer in his 20's got a new Puma Racing, on the employees deal, with Insurance that stated that if his car was wrote off in the first 6 months they'd get a new one. Of course, when he wrote it off, they couldn't find a new one, and he was gutted. Not sure what the outcome was, just that he was negotiating to get his old one reshelled. It amuses me that a standard red puma can be had for about £500 (on here), but a racing is going to be much more. AldridgePrior 1
Timewaster Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 Pension material. Just soak it in waxoyl before you squirrel it away. Has anyone seen how much 3 door Sierra Cosworths are now?Sporting Ford tax is still alive and well.
Mr Lobster Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 A proper Racing Puma would be a pretty good investment. It'd need to be fairly original and not overly fucked about with though. I would have thought that a decent standard 1.7 Puma would be worth holding onto if you had somewhere that wasn't costing you to store it.
Station Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 My mate in work has one, only 500 were made, and only released in the UK. If you think of that in the same was as an x-pack mk2 Escort, I reckon they'll be worth loads in 10+ years time. They have parts that are not available on other Puma's, and you need to be an owner to buy them from a main dealer - same with the Astra mk4 888 (which I reckon is the equivalent to the Ascona I200).
Timewaster Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 Ha ha. A bloke I knew bought one of those 888 astras. He kept on about how special it was and how lucky he was to have got one and what an investment it was. He even shelled out for a 888 number plate that was meaningless on anything else. Six months later he px'd it for a vectra and lost a fortune. Twat.
the judge Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 Racing Puma? Money in the bank in a few years
AldridgePrior Posted January 4, 2015 Author Posted January 4, 2015 Right ok. The car in the pic is just an example,so sorry I should have said. The car as far as I'm aware has had a small bump. Not a crash, a parking job. It won't have much miles on it and i had a quick look at the arches and saw no corrosion.. I,ll keep you posted on any development. Cheers. Oh, and I,ll get the number. dugong 1
sporty-shite Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 BUY IT!!!!!! Can't say anything that hasn't already been said about future values, etc. When I had my 1.7, I used to go on project puma, and these things looked like they were bringing decent money back then. The fact that they're all numbered means that the market won't be flooded with snides in the furure, so values, IMO, can only rise. Hopefully for you, quite rapidly. AldridgePrior 1
fordperv Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 My money would be out of my pocket if it's the right price, these are only going to rise in value

cort16 Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 I'd have one no bother. I don't think they're much quicker than the standard puma performance wise but as a great handling rare ford with thinning numbers it's got to be money on the bank .
overrun Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 The inlets (as well as being numbered) flow better, iirc.Think the ECU, exhaust and cams differ, too. They had about 15-20 extra bhp, iirc. They are all about the drive, though.
alfetta Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 they have about 25 bhp more than standard. Fun cars.
PiperCub Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 Never driven one myself so can't say if they are good/bad/otherwise but almost anything limited edition like this is a worthwhile investment. As someone said - who'd have predicted the prices of Mk1 (& indeed 2) Escorts 20+ years ago? (If I had of, I'd have bought a barn-full when they were sub-£1K for a good one!!!!). Kept properly, better than no-interest savings accounts.
Mr_Bo11ox Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 100% unanimous view that these are a credit-crunch-busting blue chip investment. Must admit I would agree. BUY
trigger Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 If you can afford it and it's not expensive then you must go for it, the value of these are going up by the day. I had a 1.4 model which wasn't bad although i couldn't get on with it but a Racing version must be brilliant fun.
Pillock Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 They have parts that are not available on other Puma's, and you need to be an owner to buy them from a main dealerWTF? How on earth are they policing this, do you have to drive to the dealer in your Racing Puma or is there a special handshake only owners and parts goblins know? Ford in "turning money down" shocker. Same as for that big spoilered Astra.
overrun Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 From my mate: (I forgot about the visibly hacked about lower arms etc) Id have another. Shame i can't store as an investment. Will be worth good money. Or will it? Rs1600i, max £10k?? Frp is still 4-10 now. Frp engine: 421 manifold, inlet, airbox, lumpy cams, ecu map. Rest is same. 125ps vs 160ps though. Tickford bodged wide track mods but aside from all of that, i'd mention the original arches are still behind the wide ones on the rear and DO RUST! Just as bad as the rest. Remove wheel arch liner carpet and look at them. A good 1-2inches away from flared one so obvious to see. If it's gone, that's the rear qtrs off to repair. AldridgePrior 1
