Daihatsu Terios: gen me up, please...

...specifically why are the 1.3 engines made of solid gold? Might be getting one soon with a knock (thought to be big ends, but not heard it myself) and it's not economically viable if eBay is anything to go by.

Anyone know what other cars had these engines and how much I can realistically score a decent used engine for, please? Failing that, what sort of job is ripping the engine out and replacing the mains if they're u/s?

Thanks in advance etc

Is it not the same lump they used in the Yaris? Or maybe it's the 'same' engine like the Mini/Maestro relationship.

The lad reckons it was the later ones with a Yaris lump and said this is an early one, but thanks  though, DW.

Before you yhink of ripping engines out check for rot....thry love to rot, serious rot, obvious plases like sills, but if you pull back the trim in the boot, if there is any metal left you will be lucky, i like them for what they are, but by fuck can they rust. I imagine the yrv will have the same engine, not many of them out there either...

No.

Daihatsu engines are different to Toyota.

The 1.3 is the K3 -VE later ones the K3-VE2, VET is turbocharged.

These are also found in Daihatsu Sirion and YRV.

There are brand new engines and various parts now and again on ebay relatively cheaply from IM (the old Daihatsu importer) ... There was a short block K3 1500cc bottom end on ebay last month for £300 new.

Billy if you want me to find out about spare K3-VE motors I may know some people, as well as a specialist Daihatsu breaker, so let me know and I'll ask around.

edit: My bad, the early ones used the "HC-EJ" single cam motor ... I have no idea what else that was used in as it's not one I've come across before

Cooling system can be fragile, maybe a thermostat problem? Anyway they like to pretend to be K series by routinely blowing head gaskets and warping the head.

Absolutely every Terios I have seen has needed or already had extensive welding in the rear seat mount/boot floor area.

My mate runs one, it's a little compact for my liking but it's a good reliable car that always gets him home in the snow, not too thirsty either.

They are rubbish, we mot'd one and it's chassis legs were rotted out. When it was fixedit still drove like a turd.

Thank you, gents.

The car in question has MOT until May and by the owner's admissions has 'barely a straight panel on it' and he wants £200. I'll try and go and look at it (in the vain hope the knocking is a simple fix, though I doubt it) and will walk away if it's a big job, as it doesn't really seem worth the bother from the sterling advice you've all offered.

Based on the facts given above, I've done the sensible thing and submitted an offer for it without actually viewing it. WCPGW, etc?

Posted

And, with predictable predictableness, I've had my SUBMIT SHITTEST OFFER accepted.

If it's an auto and not completely fucked there's a 1% chance I could be interested .....

Non-differently-abled box, sorry.

Is that you committing suicide in the first picture?

No, but if it's anything like the 105 mile drive I once did in a Kia Sportage, it soon will be.

Loving the citroen trims.

Worth more than the rest of the disgusting little shitlet, well unless he finds a Feux Orange under the back seat.

The mother-in-law had one of these.... hateful thing, made the K series look like a reliable rust free motor cost her about £1,000 a year for welding and headgaskets... eventually persuaded her to sell it...after 3rd OMGHGF.

Take earplugs when you pick it up its about 4,000 revs at 60.

I REALLY want to take this to a local 'pay and play' 4x4 place, just for a laugh.

Please give me a bell when you decide to do that...

Burn it with real fire! Then burn it again.

Smash yourself in the face with the wing mirror for buying such an utter horror of a thing.

Shudder.

They are pretty good off road, front wishbones tend to get knocked but with enough brute force and diff lock on they can be made to go most places...
