Uncle Jimmy Posted December 23, 2014 Posted December 23, 2014 Went to a general garage/tyre fitters today with a pair of tyres, one brand new, one barely used, wanting them fitted/balanced.Reply: Sorry, can't fit tyres unless we supply them or you have a receipt from where you bought them. Reason: there are a lot of tyres stolen at the moment, we are checked by the government regularly and it's now law not to put tyres on without proof of ownership. What the??? Am I hallucinating?? Has anyone had this kind of claptrap spouted to them??
MrDuke Posted December 23, 2014 Posted December 23, 2014 I call BS. I can understand them not wanting to fit older part-worns in case one fails and you try to sue them, but legality doesn't come into it.
AlabamaShrimp Posted December 23, 2014 Posted December 23, 2014 Sounds like total bollocks to me but then what do I know
Uncle Jimmy Posted December 23, 2014 Author Posted December 23, 2014 Brand new with sticker still on one, about a hundred mls on the other!
Jim Bell Posted December 23, 2014 Posted December 23, 2014 Liar because buy tyres from us please. dugong, Banger Kenny, barefoot and 1 other 4

bigfella2 Posted December 23, 2014 Posted December 23, 2014 I smell bullshit!! I think there just been an arse. Don't get this with tyre fitters, they charge £10-£15 to fit a tyre. For the price of a valve and some sticky lead and the rest is profit. If it were me i would open a tyre place stock NO tyres and just fit everyone elses that they bought cheap off tinterweb. Would make a fortune. Vince70, Uncle Jimmy, Asimo and 1 other 4
Uncle Jimmy Posted December 23, 2014 Author Posted December 23, 2014 ^^Barry Shitpeas^^^That's something I'd considered. If so why not say it instead of being a knob. In a similar vein I had an MOT tester go a bit mental because he 'thought' I'd booked with someone else- are paranoid delusions particularly common in the motor trade?? Jim Bell 1

Junkman Posted December 23, 2014 Posted December 23, 2014 I encounter this frequently lately in various lines of businessesses. The horseshit is always the same.Either they tell you it's against a law they just made up, or they give you a quote for some insane amount of ££££s. My lapidary questions in these situations are:Do you think I pull up my trousers with a pair of pliers? Why don't you just tell me you are rich and don't have to work for your money? Re. your tyres - go to a place that sells partworns. They'll happily fit them for you for some reasonable dosh. brickwall, nigel bickle and Twiggy 3
Barry Cade Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 We fit anyone's tyres, as long as they are suitable for the rim and are not going to endanger anyone.. and charge for valve and balance, which is where the real money in tyres is anyway...not a lot to be made on tyre sales now. We are also now a fitting station for an online tyre supplier and make a decent margin from it..most of the time they'd have paid less coming to us direct, but 'tinternet's always cheaper innit? As for the initial question/post. Absolute bollocks. Must have been close to lunchtime/Christmas. Banger Kenny 1
The Reverend Bluejeans Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 I go to my local Kwikfit who fit and balance for around 5-10 quid a tyre.
Uncle Jimmy Posted December 24, 2014 Author Posted December 24, 2014 Well, I've used him before for tyre changes and buying the tyres- no problem. In fact he's put some pretty ancient tyres on before. I just can't understand the bullshit. I have need of a new set for the Ovlov and a set to go on my Levin so that's several hundred quid trade he's just lost. Not had much luck with mechanics etc recently- saying they'll do jobs and they don't, leaving my stuff lying around for weeks without doing it- funny lot really. If I behaved in that kind of offhand way towards my customers I'd have a lot of time on my hands!
Parky Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 I would be inclined to ask him what rule he is referring to as you went and looked it up and as far as you can tell there isn't any such law in place. I presume that the entire part worn market has collapsed overnight and Blackcircles et al now only a fully fitted service as a result of this law? Didn't Mr B once do a guide to changing your own tyres?
Vince70 Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 It must be a new ruling as I recently went to kwikfit who swapped a couple of tyres over for me which I think cost £14 a wheel. But at the same time I was told I needed new shocks, disks and pads and a full service plus a new air freshener before I took the car away lol. But Some of these big concerns come up with some complete Bullshite. My neighbours have a 2 year old mini coupe and it went in for warranty work the other week and when the car was taken in the couple was told that the new stripes that were to be fitted to the bonnet can't be done till they let them put two new front tyres on the car as it will invalidate the warranty. And if the car was left with the BMW dealer it would have to be impounded till the couple coughed up the money for the new boots as it would be unsafe to drive otherwise with the old tyres on the front. I don't know what the legalities are but surely some big concern can't just refuse to give you your car back and just impound your car because their slack on work.

panhard65 Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 I had the same trouble with a formula first tyre bay. We had 2 new tyres still on the steel spare wheel rims. They said due to health and saftey they couldn't fit them. I called them a bunch of twats like you do and went round the corner to an idependent tyre fitter and had them done for a tenner a piece. A few weeks later a valve went on my other halfs 807. (They have tyre pressure monitors and one bent and started to leak) We limped it to the nearest kwik fit before it went down and asked them to stick a normal valve in it. Another bunch of twats that can't possibly do that just in case nuns and kittens might die. Luckily it wasn't losing too much and we got it back to the independent who done it straight away and explained that the light would be on but othewise it is perfectly safe. As for the not releasing the car unless you have the work done that would be illegal. If it were me I would let the car out with a strongly worded advisory on the bill. Just in case they have a fatal accident on the way home, you can bet your life the realatives would blame the garage that let them drive away an unsafe car.
twosmoke300 Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 Maybe they didnt like the cut of your jib
Pillock Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 Wheatley Renault once refused to give my mum her Megane back until the brakes had been done, but the pads were down to the metal so fair play.
Joey spud Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 I have the kit on my van that allows me to do in certain situations a temporary plug repair to a tyre. If the hole is in the tread area and the side wall hasn't been damaged by being driven deflated i can insert a rubber plug with a bit of blue gunge and reinflate the tyre. This is rather usefull with all the cars that don't carry spares now days.i issue the driver an assistance form stating its a temp repair and max 40mph only untill a permanent tyre off rim repair can be carried out. This system has worked fine for years then a very large tyre retailer was refusing to repair anything that had been temp repaired by us stating it had been damaged futher by our repair so making the owner buy a new tyre.Obviously the owners had the arse with us and complained long and loud.So we then had a meeting with someone high up in this fast fit company voicing our concerns of mis selling and they looked into it and came back and said this was not company policy and that staff at certain branches had been dealt with. Going off course a bit wheels with tyre pressure monitoring systems are cack. Most are part of the ally tyre valve and after a couple of years the ally gets a bit brittle so you nip into your local petrol stn to top up your tyres and then snap the head off the valve with the tyre pump. Had a lad the other night with an i30 do this so instead of quitting he then decided to check another pressure and snapped the valve off that one too.. Anyone know if the warning light for these is part of the mot test yet ?? Barry Cade 1
brickwall Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 My local just check s the tyre for obvious damage and then fits. 4 for 20 quid HillmanImp 1
nigel bickle Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 Just had 2 swopped off steel rings onto unusual Revolution alloys to see what they look like on the Bocanegra.£10.
a60rod Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 Some tyre fitters act like they are the bouncers of the automotive industry. Puffed out chests. Talkign down to you. Blah.Kwikshit had a deal, clearly the cardbaord sign was not Tom Farmer approved - free puncture repair. What's the catch? Just needs to be legal Sir.Fat Les measures the tread depth. Not legal Sir. You need a new tyre."Yes very good cunty but you clearly put your tread depth gauge ON TOP of the 1.6mm indicator. Would you like me to measure with my own that is in the glove box?". I have a way of endearing myself to these lemons it seems. What fucks me off is I'm a mouthy fuck who has worked in the motor trade proper, not some 'technician' who fits bits til it works again, but how many old bids and just unknowledgeable people have these wonkas ripped off? chaseracer Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 Any retailer trying that shit loses my business pronto. Fortunately, there are plenty of options round here
Barry Cade Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 Anyone know if the warning light for these is part of the mot test yet ??It is, but only for cars after 2012, so not actually a problem yet.. Used to carry my motorbike tubless kit on the breakdowns too- saved me a lot of hassle and punters were usually over the moon to get going again. It is advised that a tyre that has been repaired with sealant is then scrap, but we tend to repair when possible. makes a hell of a mess though, and don't,whatever you do, get it in your eye......
Bren Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 I bet they were happy to fit the shitty king pin ditchfinders that they could offer.
