Classic car VED exemption query

Folks, just want to get this clear in my head.

My Toledo was first registered 5th Nov 1974. So whilst not VED exempt at this point in time, it will be from 1st April 2015?

Is that right or am I being stupidly optimistic.

Cheers

It`s not the registration date which determines the exemption from VED. It`s the date on which the vehicle was manufactured which determines whether it is liable to VED.

Yes I think that's correct!

So you will get it to become tax exempt, as the elections are the same year and if labour win it I bet they will put a stop to the rolling exemption thing again! Isn't the elections in May?

My mk2 Capri, registered March 1974 will be tax exempt from the same April 2015 date so I'm keen to get it done!

Ah, forgot that. I guess that as mine was a late registered 74, I doubt that the build date would make it exempt yet anyway. I suppose the only true way of knowing would be to get a Heritage Certificate. Hmm.

I'm another one waiting for april 2015 ror free road fund licence with my datsun being Nov 1974 reg.

The new rolling tax exemption thing will, after next year save me a lot of money. Compared to the previous years where I've had to pay road tax for 4 old cars all in the higher tax band (so £220 odd a year each!)

As of April next year I'll only be paying for 2 cars in the same band.

My yank is exempt now and the Capri will be as of April. A bit of a wait for the other two though as they are 80's cars.

There is not a rolling tax exemption. Last year there was an increase of one year, to 1.1.74. Any further increase is under review.

Thinking on it, I expect we may get another year or two at some point but somehow my cynicism towards politicians suggests they aren't about to let us motor around in Golfs, Cavaliers and Sierras for nowt.

Last year's budget re-introduced the rolling exemption.

My Cortina is another one waiting for April, do we have to apply for the change at the post office or does it happen automatically?

Didn't know it was officially a rolling exemption again. Happy days.

Or was I imaginerarring it?

I own a 73 1303, it was registered in 73, but built in 72.

Back in the mists of rolling twenty five, I got a letter from DVLA telling me to take my disc back to the post office and get a free one.

A surprise, but a pleasant surprise.

Does anyone know if the mot exemption is rolling? My anglia is 51 years old. I will still mot it but will be good to be able to shake it down for a few weeks prior if poss.

Well that's great news, all the more reason to buy another '70s shitters!

The tax exemption for 74-75 has not been confirmed yet. I asked dvla and got a response that it needs to be confirmed in next years budget.

However you can make the quite reasonable assumption that the car was not manufactured after the date it was registered, and thus use the registration date if you have no other information to go off as is clearly the case here.
