gentelmenz.

me and the tribe are heading to the uk on the 9th of dec. hiring some modern toss car will relieve my wallet of $600. instead my idea was to buy the cheapest chod i can for sub 200 quid, and insure it for a month. then dispatch it to the scrappers or someone on here? but my cousin pointed out the tax rules have changed and now i must tax said shite upon buying. that screws the budget. is there any way round this?

i have dreams of driving some prime chod for a month.

No way around it I'm afraid, though you can tax by direct debit - ie just tax it for a month. Might be better to use your money to 'hire' a car from someone.

Can you not just DD it from a UK friends account for the time you are here? You will then only have to pay by the month. Not really looked into how payments work if you can just do it on a credit card or owt.

When you sell/scrap the car the remaining tax should be automatically refunded.

It's the complication of not having a UK address that might cause problems here. As mentioned, solved if you can get a UK-based mate to act as go-between.

ah well looks like ill be driving some sort of peugeot econobox. thanks people.

I have just been online and used the DD system and you do indeed need a bank account and it didn't give me the option to use a credit card etc.

If you pay by Direct Debit and cancel your tax at any given point, I assume rather than a refund you just stop paying in future for it?

Posted

Yeah that's right ^^^^^ if you pay by installments and for whatever reason a payment doesn't go through the car just becomes untaxed. There's no penalty.

I would have thought insurance would be a bigger stumbling block than road tax for people visiting the UK buying and legally driving a car.

You can tax a car with a credit card, pay for 6 months, £120 or whatever it is and when you sell the car the remaining balance is refunded. What is the issue?

TBH the penalty for driving without tax and insurance is probably nothing if you are visiting from abroad. Matthew Broderick managed to kill 2 people and was only fined £175. What will you get for no insurance? You will probably be taken to court and they will give you money. *

So...if I apply for RFL on-line will I get the chance to pay by DD? I know that sounds daft, but if it goes straight to full payment I'm f*cked as I haven't got the funds in the bank at the minute!

FFS!

I'm using the doc ref code on the new keeper's bit of the V5 which is supposed to be 12 digits, but it's only 11 so I can't tax or Sorn it!

I've just taxed the Disco using my phone whilst sat in Morry's car park

6mth on direct debit

Backdated to the beginning of the month

1st payment will be taken out on or around 22th of this month

Works for me !!

Billy, I think there's a different option for V5, new keeper supplement and reminder. Some numbers are 11 and some 12 but there's a right bit of the webpage to put each in.

I taxed the MG using V5 on the 1st at 8am - even though the tax ran out at end September so I didn't get the DD option all through October, come November I saw the DD option appear

Money seems to go between two and three weeks after the tax comes into force ( mine's due out on 17th), then a quick one to get it into line on the first of the next month.

Bollocks to that, I want to pay DD.

I'm glad they cut the red tape, it was an absolute nightmare the old way. I'm especially looking forward to the cheaper road tax that will accompany this cost cutting measure.

I am sure it only gave me the option of 12 months DD when I did the Visa yesterday. Maybe something to do with minimum cost?

Posted

I taxed the cavalier the other day via monthly DD with no issues and the payments due on the 17th.

There must be a penalty of some sort for a bounced DD otherwise you could tax a car and stoat around in it for three weeks all legal, then just let the DD bounce and pay nowt.

Can't you just buy a pre 73 car and freshly tax at the post office for a year?

Posted

I don't mind 12 months DD as I'll just sack the payments off when I've sold the car, it's just I do t seem to have the option at all because I'm one digit short on the V5C!

Odd, the website gives you all three options.... 16 digit reminder, 11 digit V5, or 12 digit new keeper.

I just looked at my V5 and it's 11 digits (4-3-4) and the green slip I got with the MG has a 5-3-4 format number on it.

You can DD at post office. Did that with the civic.

Changed the tax class, taxed it by dd there and then, both with green slip.
