After some beers back in the day, we imaginatively* changed a friend's company mk5 Escort to a SCROTE.  I don't think he ever noticed.

Used to be a taxi driver living up the street from my grandma. His mondeo letters where changed to read o demon. Baffled me that did

Why are some car model letters 'faster sounding' ?

R S and T . Yes definitely

Now that you mention it, I have all three together.

In saying that the 4 series coupe is quite nice looking.

I like it. The first BMW to actually look like a BMW in years.

Posted

Hideous looking thing, the only thing BMW can think to say about it in their marketing blurb is that its the first ever FWD BMW, I mean WOW! A fwd car, what next?

wasnt that the bini?

Posted

Technically the Bini was a Rover, or at least Rover Grope did most of the design, BMW were only really responsible for final nips and tucks and the marketing the hell out if it.

Which they did do very successfully.

The Bini Mk2 may be the first totally BMW designed FWD car, I don't know how much is different to the Mk1, they look identical to me.

The 2 active vehicle or whatever it's called is the first FWD car with the BMW badge.

When I owned a Fiat Marea SX Weekend I dreamed* of getting hold of the badge from the ELX model and creating a Marea SEX Weekend.

All this talk of BMWs above reminded me the i3's standard wheels and tyres are skinnier, to scale, than those on a 2cv. They're amazing the motoring columns talked about amazing grip and swerveability. Similar things have been said about the i3.

I learned two things this morning I didn't know I didn't know.

- Iso Grifos were still being built after 1972 (as the IR-8 model).

- Those late ones were Ford instead of Chevy powered.

The switch to Ford engines was made, because Chevrolet all of a sudden wanted their engines to be paid for in advance.

Another example of stupid management decisions killing sales.

Having said that, I have personal experience with Italian payment morale.

A vw t4 filler cap has a notch cut into it so when you fill up, the cap can be hung on the flap .. Not in the manual.. and i've had it 14 years without knowing!

The upper swage line on a mk2 Golf fades out halfway along the nearside rear quarter panel, but runs all the way to the rear on the other (I think)

This may or may not be true

I remember being told it by a Sc3n3 going mate and literally couldn't be arsed to find out lol

Jag X type V6 is based on a Porsche engine that was meant to go in the Boxster until Porsche decided to go with a flat 6.

Really? I always thought it was a Ford lump?

Yup. The Duratec V6 was a Porsche design initially. The Jaaaag one has VVT and Cosworth tweaks.

Crikey! In the trade they used to call them 'disposable engines' not sure they still do but not well regarded back when I was involved. No wonder Porsche binned it!

I've had two. The Duratec in the Cougar which is still smooth and very quiet, and the AJ-V6 in the X type that seems sweet.

No doubt they have issues, but I've not had any yet.

That's quite a Volkswagen thing to do, I wouldn't be surprised if all Volkswagens the same age has the same thing.

Renault 5  has 2 different wheelbases :  i.e.  the wheels are further apart on one side

Same goes for Renners 4, 6, 16, and maybe others.

By design or is that justy shoddy quality?

The oil filler caps from MK2 Golfs are interchangeable with the oil filler cap on many modern Audi's including the R8, probably Lamborghinis too with the Audi derived V10. That's the VAG way.

Ferrari and Volvo use the same bolt pattern for their wheels, center bore is the same too I think,

Its to do with the way the rear suspension is mounted.

It's something like one full width torsion beam in front of the other I think.

Posted

^ This.  Basically, the rear wheels are at the ends of two beam half-axles that swing off the same pivot in the middle of the car.  The pivot mounts are next to each other, in line north-south, so one wheel is forward of the other.

It's GR27 for going over speed bumps without really noticing.

I'm still coming to terms with I-Cdt-I on the back of my accord. Why the 2 i's or the C ? I think DDDVVTT-i   would be better - Direct Deisel Distribution Variable Vane Turbo Technology - i for Idiots Only.
