How far do you commute?

22 miles each way at about 23mpg. All motorway, made more entertaining by driving a Dodge Charger R/T.

I'm only a shiteist in spirit for 50 weeks of the year these days, unfortunately.

58 miles total, 4 days a week at silly times of days that are mainly traffic free / or if there is traffic it's only the last two miles. With an allowance to make sure I'm there on time it's two hours a day, so only eight hours a week, which isn't a lot compared to some but is still the equiverlent of the 5th day I'm lucky not to work...

I used to do more round the m25 5 days a week, which didn't get me down as much as it should have done. Conversely I've also lived within cycling distance of work and the difference having some for of physical activity in my day made to my well being I didn't really realise until I gave it up.

The distances as a country we commute are just plain stupid but a symptom of the broken housing market that we live in to an extent. If we could get a lot of commuters off our roads, there would be more space to enjoy driving on our days off.

About 26 miles a day, five days a week on country roads occupied by cretins of the highest order, very hilly, lots of bendy roads mean you're constantly on the loud pedal.

Herman averages around 25mpg, the SAAB about 30.

Totally agree with this.

I was totting up how far I commute back and to to work each year.

So how far do you commute? Have you ever got to rhe point where you decided it was'nt worth it?

Depends - current job works out at 3000.

New Job will be somewhere round about 9000 a year, but new job includes lots of home visits and some outlying clinics.

Current commute is 297 feet.

Incidentally if my door was at the other end of my yard the commute would be 33% longer.

Varies between 70 miles and 1/2 a mile a day depending on where the work is, I refuse to go any nearer London than Croydon these days though, would rather drive 3 times the distance in the same time going the opposite direction

For me twice a week, Basingstoke to avonmouth, a round journey of 179miles, the rest of the week is spent working from home. I've a new Volvo v40, but so wish I had a rhythmic 6 cylinder to listen to along the M4, dropping down a gear in a diesel just isn't the same.

About 600 yards down the lane...the beauty of living and running the local garage in the same village. Depending on what time we go and open up, it's sometimes quicker to walk given the local primary school is between the two locations and is a favourite for the 4x4 brigade abandoning their little darlings as close to the menagerie as is humanely possible...

It's 63 feet from my bedroom to the kitchen. My commute is then 42 feet from the lounge to my office after breakfast.

Some of that commute involves stairs.

Before I retired, I did a 50 mile round trip.  So...

52 weeks in a year;

less 6 weeks holiday;

less 1 week in bank holidays leaves

45 weeks commuting per year.

x 5 day week =

225 days

x 50 miles =

11250 miles - and for a BMW 535 V8 at 25 mpg =

450 gallons or

2250 litres

at £1.15 per litre

£2,587.50 just in petrol alone.

OMG - I should have retired much earlier than I did

I am not going ever going to calculate how much I spend on fuel. And before anyone yells 45p a mile, this dramatically decreases after 10,000 miles and I am pretty sure I make a loss even at 41mpg once tyres and servicing are factored. For the last 15 months I have been doing between 5500 and 6100 biz miles a month according to my invoices. All changes from now on as I get up, walk up 13 stairs to my desk, and occasional trips to kitchen. Working from home again.

Bliss.

I fancy working from home - but don't think the skill set I have lends it's self to homeworking. Maybe a change of job has to be considered.

The job centre is only around a mile or two away so it's only a half hour walk into town once every couple of weeks.

The money isn't great but it's better than my 180 mile round trip to work for my last job on nights but I did cheat sometimes as I would occasionally stay in a B and B if I was flush.

40 miles each way on bad Scottish A roads 6 days a week on my motorbike until I can change the clutch on my cityrover.

6 miles each way...

Takes up to a hour on the way there, but about 10 - 15 mins on the way back...

Reason? Working the nightshift (5pm - 3:30am) and the fact of living in the city center and working near the airport.

Using an LS400 in evening rush hour is great because of the levels of comfort, not so great for the fuel cost's...

Currently doing 165 miles a day, 5 days a week with another 70 on Sunday. In my field, you have to go where the work is. We deliberately put down roots in a reasonably central spot and here we will stay.

I've pretty much always had an hour each way, so it doesn't bother me in the slightest.

Posted

7 miles there, 8.5m back.

It could be 7m back but I'd have to tackle a very dangerous junction in pitch black which I flat out refuse to do.

Once or twice a week I will drive anywhere between 30 and 70 miles doing site visits.

My annual mileage will likely be around 10k per annum so no need for a diesel. In this recent cold weather, though, the S60 has been getting 26-28mpg rather than 30-32mpg.

I freakin' love working from home. Just not having to do the commute, even if it's a pathetic 7m, feels wonderful. Especially in the winter.

Sorry. 165 miles a day ? What line of work are you in?

I currently commute 110 miles on a Monday and 110 miles back on Thursday or Friday.

According to my accountant, from the end of Jan, unless my client changes the location he wants me to do his work at, I won't be able to put hotel, food, or miles through the company.  Which is worth £6000 in income tax.  I rather I will have to pay £6000 more income tax. I'm discussing with client, whether I might be able to do the work from a different location.  But complicated by security considerations.

That sounds like the 24 month rule. It's a difficult one to get around; although definitely possible.

I'm a radio broadcaster. I could stay away from home in the week, but an hour or so to get home and be with my family is worth it.

My commute varies as I move around from building site to site. Currently I travel from Gravesend to Lewes, near Brighton, about 70 miles each way. Fortunately we have a minibus that I meet locally so it doesn't really cost anything but it's added about 3 hours to my day. Assuming good traffic on the M25 and M26 I leave the house at 5:30am and get home a little after 6:00pm.

How the hell does a firm based in Gravesend get work all the way out in East Sussex anyway?

It's fucking stupid. I can't actually move house 110 miles. My next contract after this could be anywhere in the country, and I do try to keep my costs down. But it's still £400 a month to rent a room in someone's house and it's still 14000 miles a year, and there's food on top of that (you might think that I eat the same food when away, but 2 of us eat cheaper when we are together, than when we are separate).  The result will be more tax to pay.

I digress. Client says the contract will have a work location 20 miles away, but I think I'll  have to travel to current location at least 3/5 days because of the need to use equipment and data not available or transferable to other location.  Accountant is not convinced that HMRC will be unhappy.  Bastard sits on the fence.

I do about 36 per day but that involves 3 junctions of the M25, so the misery mileage is about 360 per day. Hateful fucking stupid twat M25.

No idea......my office is only 10 miles from here. Do that on the motorbike in better weather, use the car or train in between.

Then occasionally I'm out on site but again depending where and when it's either the works ford ranger, my own car, someone else's, the motorbike......

From 26 miles per day, which used to include tolls, I now walk to walk.  My commute is literally a walk in the park.  I can see my destination from my garden.  Its GR8.

I really dislike my commute, its a paltry 8 miles each way but its all stop start traffic in rush hour and can take 30mins+. But reading the distances some of you lot drive to work, and the time it takes you puts mine into perspective a bit! Think I'll count myself lucky. Still might look into working from home though.

My commute has changed since last I commented on this thread. My place of work has changed from Heathrow to Luton, so the journey's easier and quicker (only 25 miles each way). I can do the run in half an hour if I don't get stuck in too much traffic.

What's better I've partially retired, so I only work 2 days per week! The 5 day weekend is great!

Wakefield to killinghall (Harrogate) is my latest daily comute. 35 mile via A1 on a morning. 28 mile on an evening via single carriageway roads trying to avoid Harrogate traffic. Starting at 7am it's quicker to burn up the motorway and thru town than it is going the shorter route.

This jobs quite local to me at the minute, for my firm. Was doing York to Huddersfield before I moved house. What a royal pain in the cock that was.
