I recently discovered that the Volvo S80 when equipped with a V8 sounds bloody amazing, what cars do you think make a laavly noise?

For some years I had a 92 Corvette with stainless exhausts, don't think neighbours liked me doing 6 am work starts with it though!

Go to the USA, walk down any city street, hear georgeous V8 burble and turn around.

See delivery van.

Seriously. Ford Econoline vans sound great.

The 'pulling away' whine of a Morris Minor and the funny sucking air change of exhaust note when declutching to select second gear, also an old school diesel lorry engine, (Gardner Cummings etc) working hard.

Obviously dirty, rumbling V8's and 1.0 Corsa's with modified exhausts are right up there too*

* One of the above is a feeble attempt at irony, draw your own conclusions

** Its the Corsa !!

Tvr cerbera v8 . Different to most v8s . More like 2 big bike engines together. Amazing

The best sounding V8 of all times is the Triumph Stag.

Sorry, pushrod fans, but after being around V8s for 40 years, this is my final conslusion.

And entirely btw, the second best sounding one is the new 6.3 litre Mercedes medical response estate at the Nurburgring.

Junkman's P6 V8. End of.

I like a softer burble, not tinny/metally burble.

To be fair, older Alfa V6s sound pretty special when mated to a decent set of pipes.

No actually I meant my brother in laws Yamaha Passola. He was in the Fire brigade.

Wrong, my/any old 944S sounds like a highly tuned motorcycle firing up at dawn and my T2, exiting through an elderly 'Supertrapp' is enough to stop the recently deceased on their way to the Winchester club.i

Yes and they go well too,had minibus one as a hire car in Florida a few years ago, it had an LSD and would lay perfect 100yd 11s. Being a particularly responsible parent I taught my kids how to do donuts in it on Daytona Beach, well until obese versions of Jon and Ponch arrived on Quads and bollocked me,anyway.

As for sounds,I'm getting a bit jaded about AMG Mercs ,Astons and Jag F- Types, they all seem to be trying too hard. Give me an old 6 cylinder BMW or 5 pot Audi at full chat, especially a works Quattro approaching from 2 miles away in a pitch black Dyfi or Kielder.

Incredibly, ford made/make a version of the econoline with the Triton 7 litre v10 petrol engine. Woof!

Yeah, but mine is haunted and thus unusually subdued, minatory and sinister sounding.

No other P6 V8 I've heard sounds like it.

Agreed.

Or an Escort twin-cam, trying hard, in the middle of the night, (as you say) in Myherin or Hafren even. Mmmm...

Normally it's anything other than a 4 pot that sounds good, but there are exceptions. The exhaust burble and gearbox whine of a 1.8 marina taking off....the comical squeezed fart noise of a reliant 3 wheeler's peashooter exhaust...the sound of a pinto being thrashed..

I do agree that the Stag has probably the sweetest sounding v8 but they're all good. Someone near me has an early Lexus ls400 running a straight through system and that sounds veeeery good.

2.0 8V Vauxhall Cavalier SRi with a PCS full exhaust system and K&N filter being wellied in 3rd gear. No better motoring sound anywhere.

Capri 3.0S being given the full throttle treatment.

Leyland Daf 45 6 pot Cummins engine in a recovery truck coming to tow your Iveco away

RAC Ford Transit diesel coming to fix your Ford Transit diesel at the side of the road when all hope has long since flown the nest.

Cagiva 125 Roadster

Suzuki GT550 with a Piper exhaust giving it beans, or really any Japanese 2T 3 cylinder bike.

I was lucky enough to see a tarmac stage featuring Group B cars near the end of their last season and I do remember the Metros making the best noise.
