Correct style of registration plate for 1990

I would like to replace the current, modern style, number plates on the Prelude with something more period. What style would be correct? As in the style of plate issued when the car was new.

Please, thankyou!

I think fonts had become fairly standardised by 1990 - there were many variations until then. What will really make it look proper is to have a dealer-plate look, so try and find out where it originally came from. My XM's plates have a red surround and the dealer name at the bottom. It looks ace, even though it has a few cracks in it.

^^ A good plan. Will attempt to find out the original dealer. The car currently has an 'Autoshite' dealer sticker in the rear window. Matching number plates would be great!

Anyone?

Show plates with a legal font with autoshite slogan or phrase at bottom?

DMB Graphics (www.dmb.uk.com) do various repro dealer plates from the 1980s/90s, although their range is mainly VW and Ford dealers.  Lots of people will do plates in the pre-2001 font for you - eBay is full of the buggers, for example.

Yeah those look good Trig. Forgot about those (although may actually have some on some of my cars, I have NO idea)

They will do any manufacturer you want on request, you can either ask them to just design you a period set of plates for that manufacturer if you provide them dealer details to add, or if you send photos of something you want reproduced they will make these up, its a bit expensive at £35 for a set of plates, rear window sticker and (now redundant) tax disc holder given you can buy a set of plates for under a tenner but the quality, effort and attention to detail put in is worth it IMO.

Only on 1/9/01 cars, so you can have them if you're prepared for an argument at the MOT station.

That's good to know, thanks.  I want some new plates for my Rover (which currently has modern ones, fitted after it came back from a stint on the Isle of Man) and I have the original sales invoice with the Rocar of Huddersfield (and BL) logo.  Will give DMB a call when I get around to it.

DMB recently did me a set of pre 2001 plates for my Merc with the original dealer logo as well as the dealer sticker, they cost £32.50 delivered but it was definitely worth the money.
