Great thread...First car - MkIII Cortina 1600 GXL, KYU 202K.Went up in flames after 6 months of loving ownership

1981 Cherry N10, with the 'big' 1171cc engine. These must have been dreadful with the 1-litre engine. Not terribly refined, but different to the Fiesta Mk1 that otherwise seemed to be the default first car back then.

Even at 7 years old and with low mileage the door bottoms and arches were going rusty. It was mum's, I passed my test in it, bought it off her for £500 then had a decent job done on the lower half paint work which cost £150 cash and sold it after a year for £1000. Remains probably the most significant profit I've ever made on a car...

DVLA says it lived until 1993 or something, I saw it once in 1991-ish after I'd sold it in 1989.

Mk2 Cavalier GL.... D 832 DSL.Wrote it off by driving head on into some old biddys garden and into her house wall.

I think this set the trend to 'be a bit different'.

Apart from the dodgy brakes and handling, I spent three very enjoyable years in this from 1982 - 1985. And having people say at petrol stations "You're not supposed to put the oil in the petrol tank".

You never forget the pride in your first car do you.

64 (ex Chilean Ambassador) Cadillac. 6 doors, 18 ft long. I painted it candy apple green.Couldnt afford the fuel (up to 8mpg) so sold it to a complete idiot who immediately stuffed it through a shop window on Epsom High Street, trying to negotiate a roundabout at speed.Didnt miss it -but it did start a trend...

First car bought was a 1977 Hillman Avenger 1600 in yellow with black roof. It was £50 and had more dog hairs in it than the rspca kennels  Still I was 15/16. First car on road was a 1980 Talbot Horizon 1300 ls FTV323V which was the 1st of many horizon's/alpine's/solara's

In 1988 When I was 17 I bought a 1974 VW Beetle 1200L. Ran it for a year, replacing dodgy engines with other dodgy engines until it needed almost everything for an MoT. It must have been a week when an engine was working because I transferred the engine into a better condition 1300 Beetle and ran that for a bit.Fairly sure that the first Beetle was £750 and back then you were sure the next owner would be the scrapman. Not like now where for £500 you can get something half decent and for a grand something that'll run for years!

My first car: 1959 Ford Prefect 100E, XLA 947, given to me by a family friend, wasn't ready by the time I passed my test so due to lack of space I sold it and bought:My first car on the road: 1989 Mini Mayfair, G7** NKN, bought for £550, was an excellent first car but after 8000 miles I killed it in a crash, destroying an S reg Corsa in the process...First van: 1993 Ford Transit, L726 LHL, bought for £500 18 months ago, died 3 weeks ago due to engine failure on the day the MOT was due...

Been seen on here before, but there you go!

Only 10 yrs old, and fairly seriously rotten!! Loved it to bits tho, and gutted when it was rear-ended outside my student digs. Terminal damage done to rear chassis and spring hangers.

My Dad bought me a rusty old '69 Morris Minor for my 16th birthday (1991 yikes!) and told me if I could make it road worthy in a year, he'd buy my first years insurance for my 17th birthday. So I learnt to weld, how to paint, and how all the oily bits worked.Took my test in that MM. Examiner was on his first day who was also something to do with the MM owners club. Made loads of mistakes, but still passed!

A 1954 Standard 8 ! Bought 1965 for £50. No heater, no windscreen washers, and you accessed the boot by dropping the rear seats. 0 - 60 in 3 weeks, and 60-0 in slightly less.

First Car - VTC 263H - Austin 1300 £50 - taught me all about grease nipples and welding.

First Bike - FIICR - Tomos Disco Moped. £60 Taught me all about how important it was to maintain the chain

First (and indeed only) New Car E372 KRN - Fiesta Pop Plus £4565 taught me how stupid it was to buy a brand new car.

Was looking forward to seeing that one again, BSG!! Ace motor.

With apologies to Pogweasel, 1998 Daihatsu Mira Classic Turbo 4WD, bought in summer 2005:

I know it looks daft, but that's why I like it, it's just utterly ludicrous. It easily remains the most baffling car Daihatsu ever imported here, especially since they only did them in the absolute top spec with turbo and fulltime 4WD - why? God knows. Despite this, I managed not to launch it into a ditch and I've still got it, though I've not used it on the road for about a year now. Soon it'll get some attention, I'm probably going to order in a stainless exhaust for it or something to make up for the neglect and hopefully it will continue to be impeccably reliable.

Hey, I have a mira Turbo too! Although it's sat on my driveway with a broken gearbox.

It's the Avanzato TRXX-R4 version. (4 cylinders instead of 3).

Here's a pic....

Going back to topic, My first car was a Daihatsu Charade Gtti. :D

Posted

Yeah, I've got one of those as well (bet that doesn't happen too often), in fact it is waiting for me to get out of work and drive home.

I have a load of weird add-on parts if you're interested, tarmac rally ECU, decat pipe, DRS RHF4 turbo and manifold, etc. Some standard bits too, no gearbox though sadly.

Here's mine. Bought in 1994 when I was 18 for £400, ran for 3 years as daily driver then fully restored. Still got it now, will have had it 15 years in February

Posted Image

Posted

First car in 1994 was a 1970 Damask red Wolseley 16/60. Never used it on the road (legally) and soon discovered this 'recently restored' car was indeed full of glassfibre & filler! Agreed to sell it 3 years ago to some guy who paid a deposit, then despite me occasionally chasing him up, didn't pick it up till last year when in effect, he stole it!My first on the road car in 1995 was a 1985 Honda Accord 1.8 EX that I drove for 4 years & still have now. Rotten as a pear & is a spares car but just can't seem to let go of it.

That's not the 1300 that was in PC is it?

It is indeed. Must have been about 8 years ago.

Loving the stuff in the background too, the 204 and Cherry wagon (exactly the same as mine!) stand out.

My first car was a clementine 1302S Beetle, because I incorrectly assumed that girls would find me more attractive. It wasn't a bad car really, quite reliable and started everyday in the year I owned it. I paid a colossal £1300 for it in 1990 - which was around the time of the classic car price boom. I replaced it with a Renault 5 & a Saab 900 saloon.

Lol, I never expected that!

Thanks for the offer!

I'll be interested in that ECU should I manage to find a 'box. :D

1980 Renault 5 - EMT113V. Complete rustheap, everything leaked but great fun. Practical too, would like one today as it was a proper small car and perfect for city workI remember one of the brake circuits didnt seem to function properly leading to the car spinning if you performed an emergency stop. If anything it was an advantage as the car stopped quicker when travelling sideways!Undoubtedly scrapped years ago. It had no business having an MOT when I owned it in 1991

The first car I ever had was a one-owner-from-new (my great aunt!) Austin 1300 Mk3, it had some bad rust problems - I say bad, but experience has shown that it had got off pretty lightly compared to most. I could not fix it so I gave it to my mate who still has it.First car I had on the road was a VP allegro which had been painted lilac, a cool car but with plenty of rust issues, I did masses of pigeon shit welding on it, used it for a year then sold it.

A Vauxhall Nova 1.0 Swing. Lasted 6 weeks during which I crashing into a bank whilst attempting a 'drift' around a corner. Then I crashed into the back of a 4x4, only a bump but it was enough to kill it.
