Chodvertising - show me the good stuff.

Hello Autoshite.

Just started my third year at uni and i'm currently writing my dissertation on Car Culture in the 70's and 80's (as any self-respecting graphic designer would)

A main point of interest is the advertising that was about back then, and how utterly un-PC it'd be today. Just wondering if any Shiters would mind sharing some they have, or remember? I know there are some gems in the CAG thread but i can't flick through pages and pages of flaps in current company. I've hunted down a few, but hitting a bit of a wall on where to get the specifics. Anyone got any old Car mags...?

Also, sexist period adverts in general.

We did a birthday card for the copywriter who penned the phrase "at sixty mph the loudest noise is the ticking of the clock" for Rolls Royce.

It was his sixtieth birthday so he got a card with "at sixty the loudest noise you can hear is the ticking of his pacemaker" because he had conveniently just had a heart op.

In terms of wildly un-PC advertising, my favourites are the old Jordan Motor Company ones.

This total classic was from 1923.

I believe that quote was then slightly upstaged by Tony Crook who said that at 100mph in a Bristol you could hear a Rolls Royce

You're way off the mark if you think the sexism in car ads, or any ads, continued in to the eighties. The era you're describing went from the fifties through to about the late seventies. Feminist moments and women's lib ensured that the seventies was the end of an era in many ways. The cleverest ad campaigns of all time are generally recognised as being the VW ones, books are dedicated to their campaigns. They captured the mood of the times perfectly.Their Golf ad of the mid eighties shows a classy woman, breaking up with her partner, but smiling as she realises she still has her Golf GTI. There is not a reference to her tits at all, VW and all car manufacturers at this point were after the successful business woman.

Why don't you look at the portrayal of women drivers in Saudi Arabia if you want real sexism?

That's all part of the research process, isn't it? Appreciate the pointer though - being born this side of 1990 doesn't give me the benefit of having been there, unfortunately.

I've looked into the 50's and 60's a fair bit, but it's this kind of time-frame i've been having a bit of trouble finding the good stuff i've seen a lot previously. As you said, it's around this time that everything changed which is why i'm having a look into it (similarly, anything on the backlash a la the Fiat ad above is perfect). These seem to be the decades of cars seemingly being being involved with the majority of social and moral issues, so it's something to find out some more about. I'll narrow it down over the course of the year, but for now just collating a bunch of material of interest to a lot of Shiteists isn't such a bad thing. As for Saudi Arabia, i've no doubt it's pretty awful - I might touch on it but i'm dubious about how much of an effect that has on Western media.

Appreciate all the submissions, you're coming up trumps.
