Nice one Tagora - I hope the Atlantis blue paint comes out ok. Its a lovely colour, similar to Zircon blue on the P5 and P6.

Please keep those original clover leaf trims and dont be tempted by some later SD1 alloys 8)  which has been done many times before.

The wheel trims will be staying, I think they look better than alloys.

The blue in the photographs is tinted primer.

Whatever happened to the Rover SD1 that practical classics was restoring then got forgotten just as they were about to paint it? Was done at the Freckleton Rover Centre?

Posted

It was - I believe FRC is no more.

Heard a few horror stories about the place after its demise from SD1 club owners.

Car is now ready for paint.

Some surprises under the paint..

Stripped, repaired, zinc sprayed and two-pack epoxy primer applied.

Are those strange marks rust?

Amazing job as well!

AH, BL rust spiders, I'm sure there's a technical explanation for them but they always seemed like stone chip + very thin brittle paint + no primer. I had a Marina covered in them, I used to go out lunchtimes at work and fill one it.

FRC - Is this the place that never returned that chaps rare black V8-S? It was discussed at large on the SD1 forum a few years ago, AFAIK the car was never seen again. I was absolutely gutted for him.

Was it a dodgy garage or something? What happened to the SD1 that Pc were having restored then? Scrapped?

I'm condensing all my chod related activities into this thread from now on because lazy.

NEW ARRIVAL!!!!

1989 Audi 200 quattro. 139k with FSH, very original and in excellent order. The original owner passed away in 2004, the car was transferred to his wifes name and stored in a garage until just over a year ago.

I've been looking for a 100/200 Quattro/Turbo for a while, looks like a good 'un you've got there. :-D

Posted

Fine car, bloody fast too. Best 5 pot, the 2.2, which I'm presuming it is? The 2.3 wasn't as smooth and developed a bit of a reputation for throwing a wobbly. I used to run 100q estates, brilliant things. Always such a difference with the quattro, build quality seemed better as well as having adjustable-geometry rear wishbones.

A very rare car, even when they were new. I have never seen one on the road, only at an Audi dealer. They must be astonishingly rare now.

That is an outstandingly handsome purchase.

I love and hate this thread in equal measure, because jealousy.

You deffo are Timothy Dalton and I claim my £5.

I've been after a good one for years and the chances of a better one turning up are slim as they have all but disappeared. Most have been engine raped by morons for their brilliant* rally reps.

It has the 200bhp, 2226cc 10v 1B engine.

Love it!

How is the rest of the fleet coming along in particular the Tagora and Hunter?

I will have some Rover and NSU updates shortly.

Work will start on the Tagora once the Rover is finished, which shouldn't be too long.

The Hunter is finished and now lives in Scotland.

I looked at the car used in the living daylights.

I dread to think how much those split rims cost in 1986.

The car is almost back together and is currently undergoing stringent leak tests at a secret facility in the Midlands.

Impressive stuff, as ever with your cars.

I think you've seen this photo before, from when I saw it back in 2008:

1978 Rover 3500 SD1 (2008) by Spottedlaurel, on Flickr

Can't remember if I've asked this before, but have you been able to find out where this was sold new or where its original owner lived? DDX...T was very local to where I grew up.

Yes, I got a Heritage Certificate for it.

It was sold new by Mann Egerton Ipswich.

You sir, are awesome.

That Rover

So Audi

Wibble!

That Rover is utterly phenomenal! Superb work, Mr SX.

Just keep flicking between the engine bay shot on page one and the the latest one.

Hang on.....

Does that mean you've got TWO Audi 200s? That blue colour (see background, of course) is very reminiscent of STUNO's 200 Turbo, which I was lent for a few months. That engine note was very addictive when spooled up.

Nice Rover - Have a picture of the minty 200 I snapped at Terenure last year as a reward.

There's something very lovely about that scuttle panel.
