I'm amazed you're even considering it tbh. The car sounds like an absolute dog, and it's not like it's incredibly cheap or owt. Just go somewhere else and avoid having to 1. Buy a knackered Citroen C4, and 2. Speak to that total cock-warbler again.

Did you complain about him to his boss at the very least?

I didn't put any complaint in yet as I'm not sure if I'm going to buy the car, to be honest from looking into the cost of the bits it needs I think I will leave buying it and put in the complaint. I'm in a tricky situation, I can't be without a car so I was planning on buying something like this that needs work from a trader so I can pay by credit card, fix it and then once it's sorted sell my Alfa and use the money from the sale to pay off the money I spent on the credit card.

If anyone sees anything Fife that meets the following criteria please let me know:

1. Hits 60 in 11 seconds or less

2. Extra urban MPG figure 48 or better (I know this figure is make believe but it allows me to compare like with like)

3. ~£1000

4. Seller takes credit card, or doesn't mind taking £150 now and the rest of the money when my Alfa sells ;)

5. At least four seats

Apart from this I'm not fussed about anything else

I know of a car that meets all of your criteria and it's very local to you.

I will put up details and phone number in exchange for you posting the name and number of the sales twat on here.

C4's are getting really cheap now. I have got a 55 plate 1.6 petrol (only does 34mpg) that I am trying half heartedly to sell at £1500 with full service history new cam belt new clutch new brakes all round 12 month mot and 6 months tax. I will take a credit card as well but bear in mind it costs the dealer 2% minimum to accept a credit card so he will be losing a few quid by taking a card.

Walked into BMW Warrington last October after a motorbike ride in my leathers. Was completely ignored for 20 minutes, and after looking at some brochures, got some dirty looks.

Went to Williams BMW next day,had a nice cup of filter coffee and ordered the Mrs new car. Made a deal on a used one for me too. Silly Warrington BMW. Funnily enough,it was a sweaty fat twat who looked at me funny! Cheeky wanker .

As for the C4,drove couple of new ones in 2006,and remembered the clutch bite being oddly high. And the cars not being very reliable sorry....

Run away!  I really don't like the sound of that personally.  Citroens seem ok when new to me.

And then send in your cool clinical but very damning complaint letter.............

+ eleventy billion.  Walk away and don't look back.

And this from a serial Citroen owner...

A running and generally sound C4 should be cheap, as others have said. I picked a 3 door needing only a boost pipe (1.6HDi) and the interior tailgate trim reattaching at the auction for buttons about 18 months ago.

Rover dealers often were fucking awful, almost like they were doing you a favour by selling you a crap car with crap service.

I do understand you need to be fairly thick skinned and I suppose almost arrogant to sell stuff, mostly because of the inordinate amount of piss takers and timewasters, but to be rude from the off with no provocation is bang out.

Killermont in Glasgow have a real asshole in their sales staff.

Also, I phoned a backstreet dealer in Edinburgh about a Saab once.

I asked a question about the mileage and the guy was very blunt in his reply.

I just put the phone down.

There's a slaphead who works for Remax in West Lothian who is also a twat.

Im no financial whizzkid, but this is a fucking terrible plan.

1 - if you cant be without a car, dont be buying some shitheap auction fodder with a three-page fail sheet.

2 - no credit. Ever. I know this can be a hard one, but if your Alfa works, keep it until you can afford something else outright.

3 - If you ignore the above and use credit to buy the C4 (or another car), where are you financially if the repairs turn out to be more expensive than planned?

4 - what if nobody wants to buy your Alfa and you have to punt it on at a massive loss?

4 - you really - and I mean really need to be listening to people here. You have given us very little information but 100% of autoshiters agree that this car sounds like a proper kipper that should be avoided.

5 - fuck that dealership. If its such a ball-ache to buy the car in the first place, what further potential hassles are in store? Remember that them writing "trade sale, sold as seen" on the receipt does not excuse them from some basic liability about the condition of the car.

Google "Gary Brown Facebook car salesman"

(I can't paste the link for some reason)

oh and when I said previously that the key will cost £100 - £150, that assumes that everything is as it should be regarding the cars immobiliser (an aftermarket key that only works the passenger door lock? i have doubts that all is well) and you have certain information about the car, namely some stupid PIN number that is required by the Citroen dealership software to program the key. No PIN, no work. iirc they can find out the PIN, but that obviously costs extra.

Add in calipers, ball joints, gaiters and fuck-knows what else for an MOT pass, then you could be looking at a good few hundred quid just in parts alone. And if the clutch is worn, then if its a dizzler, it will almost certainly be a dual mass flywheel, which at 100k miles is a big gamble to not change with the clutch. That shit aint cheap either.

Sounds like one of those garages which act like they're doing you a favor selling you a car. Tossers.

When I became Scottish sales manager I was told explicitly never to employ anybody from the retail car sales area. This was the same stuff I heard from others in sales.

Agree strongly with the above. A knackered C4 is a liability. Ask me how I know.

For some reason I thought you were looking at another Alfa ; I didn't realise it was a C4.

This garage have demonstrated without a shadow of a doubt that it doesn't want your business. Something older and ssimpler to get you by will do for the moment, surely? Sod this 'must do 60 in under 11 seconds' guff and buy something that works.

You seem to be clinging to this C4 because it's cheap - as others have said, it's not worth the effort. How much work would £600 buy you on the Alfa?

Do not buy that C4, especially from those idiots you've tried to deal with. Avoid, avoid, avoid.

Dave's post is one of the best I have ever read on here, makes complete and utter sense and superbly put.

If you're really stuck for transport put a wanted advert on here, I'm sure someone will be able to help out somehow. Using a card is madness, lower your sights a bit and buy something cheap and reliable, there's loads of motors out there.

If you get really stuck I could probably lend you a car for a bit, it'll be a shit one of course, but it's better than walking or using a credit card.

If you stick your requirements down here and status of your current shed, we'll have a bash at suggesting something sensible.  No Horsey Horseless, I promise.

And step away from that fucked C4, tell your other half she was right and get some brownie points.

Not in Fife but can come to some arrangement to take credit card via paypal.

Just a view from the other side if the fence.

As an employee of a garage, you have no idea the level of inane questions we get on a daily basis from half breed fuckwits who have od'd on Mike-bastard-Brewer and think they are the next fucking wheeler dealer.

you probably caught him off the back of a call about whether it had full service history, and if it can be driven away and to the moon and back without ever breaking down ever and will you do a swap with a "mint m8" vectra v6 and some milk tokens.

Think of all trying to do.your job whilst every dickhead who ever asked you anything on eBay rings you up to ask what you have already told them.

Anyway, don't buy it. It'll be a massive paid in the arse and duller than a weekend with John Major and his photo collection of 20th century streetlighting.

DON'T BUY THE C4!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A world of pain awaits you if you so much as look at it again...

I was in the motor trade for a fair few years as an owner of a retail site and then working for others and without a doubt, the biggest pains in the arse to flog were the cheapies that the other traders don't want (and rest assured, the trade HAS turned this lemon down and the salesman that took it in is in a world of pain of his own from the boss). Youget all the twats that want 6000 quid cars for 60 quid and expect a full service history, warranty and if it goes pete tong, then the SOGA is quoted chapter and fookin' verse.

Posted

It sounds like a cracking car for the money. Just buy it and take it to a Citroen dealer for the work and retest because you can always get a WONGA loan to pay for the repairs and look forward to years of trouble free motoring.

Posted

The guy sounds like a twat but they have to put up with right fanny's. You know what it's like dealing with ebay and gumtree mongs when selling a car youself so imagine this but x10 and you can't really tell them to jog on. Still no excuse in this instance like but I'd not want to do the job.

Have a look at Car Dealer Memes on friendbookface to see the kind of stuff they have to put up with

I wouldn't bother complaining now, I'd have just said he was being a cock/his attitude stinks at the time and walked away. DEFINITELY walk away from this car and company, it sounds like a total money pit. Have a look at auto trader at the under a grand section, most of it is shite but there are the occasional gems. There's an R reg Civic on there at the min with 30 odd thousand on the clock for £600 or something if you're anywhere near Newcastle. Call me a masochist but I do 280 miles a week in a 58 BHP Fiat but I can't really afford owt better. 13+ seconds 0-60 FTW!

Edit: Civic is gone, not surprised, it looked a minter!
