That's lovely. It looks very familiar to me, it may have lived at Pontsticill, Merthyr Tydfil once upon a time

Classy looking motor that, well bought!

Mmm, borrowage you say? Fancy swapping one Rover for another..?!

That is just sublime. I've got the Corgi 'Tour de France's one with the cameraman on the back, got it in 1990 when there were still a few on the roads.

Thanks all :-)

Spot on, apparently it lived in Merthyr from 2008 to 2012.  You can claim your £5 :-)

Don't see why not, since it's you Rob (as opposed to some random punter from the FB page or something).  Probably needs a coolant flush (and a working speedo) before I'm brave enough to take on London traffic again, mind you - on the cards for next month sometime.

That's just great.   My neighbor had one in about 1988 but as a 10 year old I didn't take much notice.

I've just caught up with this thread, having somehow not noticed it before, and all I can say is...

Bloody hell that's nice!

What a Bobby Dazzler! Very nice. Please bring this to next year's Shitefest so that I can have a ride in it!

Just been out in it to take Keith The Dog for a walk.  (I like this working from home lark.)  It is now officially approved by Mrs S, and indeed Keith.

It's a deal :-).  Might take a couple of days to get there if Shitefest 2015 does turn out to be in Ipswich, mind.

Ruddy 'ell, that would be great.  The 220 is due a bit of tinkering too before the MoT next month so no rush.  Better check the dimensions of my garage first as I'm buggered if I'd leave someone else's SD1 parked up outside (although where I live isn't too bad, for SE London anyway...).

I found this in a box of old tat today, a Corgi Renault 16. Very tatty but complete, with reclining seats operated by rollers on the underside.

If you want it Skiz just PM me your address, maybe rub it down and blow it over in a similar colour to yours? otherwise it goes back in the box of junk for another 10 years.

Wow!  That would be fantastic - thanks EssDee!  I'll send you a pm in a mo.

(Sorry Iain...)

While I'm here, might as well do a quick update on this.

It's been pressed into regular service as a local runabout.  Mrs Skizzer loves it, as does Keith the dog, and neither of them has been car sick so far.  Nothing has broken.  I still love the ride and handling, and am getting the hang of the kickdown to cope with all the hills round here, but it hasn't exactly converted me to autoboxes.

It leaks a tiny bit into the driver's footwell in very heavy rain: there's a 2mm hole in the join between the scuttle and the OSF wing, which I'll temporarily bodge with Araldite or Tiger Seal when the rain stops for long enough.  The front wings are definitely its weak point (surprise!), so I can see these getting some proper attention in the spring.  Meanwhile I'll probably buy it a cover for the winter, since I don't have the planned big shed yet and can't find a local lock-up.

Here's the petrol station shot I owe you.

I bet your driveway looks a class act compared to everyone else's Skizzer, what with this AND the SD1.  Are the neighbours appreciative, or do they have no taste?!

:-D

The mossy roof on the Golf lets the side down a bit, but generally I think the neighbours are just pleased the multicoloured Land Rover and the rusty Scirocco have gone.  Various delivery drivers and so on have gone quite gooey about the SD1, which is nice.

Actually, next door got quite excited about the 16 as they had a TX the same year and colour when we were all kids.  (She's done much the same as me, which is left a job in London and moved back into the childhood home after parents have passed on.)

I like these, having had a look at one at a classic show a while back. The interior shots remind me how spacious it actually is, despite not being very big overall. The gent who owned that one reckoned it a stylish and comfy way to travel, and what you're saying backs that.

Yet another one for my 'someday' list...

That's good to hear.  I've got some nice neighbours who are amused by my shite purchasing habits, in particular a gold-plated giffer called Bill who's 84 and is still driving his 1982 Datsun Cherry.  Gawd bless him!

That car is pure WIN. :)
My Dad was a big fan of R16s and had three, the last of which was an auto very similar to that one in a darker shade of blue. I remember the hugs squashy seats and the smell of that French PVC in the summer of 76 heatwave to this day.

That looks soooo cool. When they were common you never really noticed them but even compared to cars of the same age they really stand out now.

As a generalisation, who drove these when they were new? I seem to remember them as being old lady shopping cars (much like my Visa).

When I was at school, my friend's father had one.  Seemed very sophisticated compared with our Vauxhall Viva.  Must have been slightly older than yours I think.  Went awful rusty though in no time at all - that cover is a very good idea.  Looks great though.

I had a drink with skizzer in that London. He told me about his Renna, and I had to leave early to pleasure myself at the very thought of the thing.

Teurp Beurmbing!

Oooh nice thread, nice car, nice colour too. My dad used to buy and sell cars for pin money when I was a kid and he had loads of 16s, mostly TX's and I still have fond memories of them.

How are you getting on with it?

Btw anyone need some TX headlamps?

I'm not trying to be deliberately contrary - but back in the day my old man had a Maxi, this and the R16 were the only real rivals to each other and on paper, the Maxi left the Renner for dead. Bigger, more powerful engine, OHC vs OHV, 5 speed, wider, very slightly lower boot lip, slightly less wheel arch intrusion etc.

And, it looked far more modern.

Fast forward 35 years and Maxi's look wank and these look foreign and exotic and...

Odd isn't it?

I'm not sure I can remember a time when the Maxi looked more modern than anything……...  :-D
