Flip-top fun and sunroof shenanigans

Evening, shiters.

Right, then: the 205 has one of those flip-tilt glass sunroof jobbies.  In theory.

Clearly, the previous owner has sorted the inevitable leakage by sealing it shut with some kind of gunk possibly more suited to heavy-duty marine applications.  This has worked, but it looks shit.

Does anyone know whether such sunroof cassettes are still available, or recommend someone who might be able to repair/replace/undo my bodgery?

Sunroofs are to old cars what wasps are to picnics.  Do yourself a favour and weld a steel plate over the top.

I very much like your aerial, by the way - very 1988 carphone.

Please insert practical and helpful suggestions re sunroofs below:

Thank you, Skiz  :)

Would you believe it's a boggo 'one size fits none' thing from Halfrauds?

I'm a big fan of sunroofs and lament their decline in popularity.

With that type, water can get in only two ways. Either between the seal and the glass or between the frame and the roof. Removing the frame and cleaning, reapplying sealant then refitting the frame will/should cure that bit. Then it's the seal to glass area. Either increase pressure on seal with some form of bodgery modification or replace the seal. I realise seals may not be available but with some searching something should be available. They're not complicated things. Hinges and clasps may be available, or similar ones. Sunroof fitters/manufacturers?Marine supplies? Sealing washers through fixing holes may be another area to look.

*mechanic at the time of after market glass sunroofs being new and fashionable may have influenced my tastes.

I often find, cleaning the rubber seal and then smearing with vaseline or similar,

can work wonders.

One of my Vivas has a glass sun roof in it for the last 20 odd years,

even that was secondhand when I fitted it.

Never leaked, but does get the above treatment from time to time.

Go on Yell.com and search for local sunroof places. You may find that there is someone locally who could fix this

There's the trick been tried on here before where you smear silicone on the rubber, where the glass would sit. Cover with cling-film and close the sunroof overnight. Open again, peel clingfilm off and you should have a perfect match to the glass.

I just bought some clear mastic from screwfix and sealed mine up that way, seems to have improved thing, mostly and as it's clear you can't see it so much.

I wonder if you joddled the edge if you could use one of these fancy new adhesives to glue in a metal panel and banish it for ever?

The roof won't have been perfectly flat though. You'd need to cut a section from another roof for it to look OK.

Get yourself a slab of checkerplate from a OneLifeLiveIt shop and rivet it over the hole.

Make up suitably macho explanation.

Not impossible to do though. Just add a couple of 10kg tubs of pudding. Sorted.

Just put the Wob on and drive under one of these to get the right curve.

Vinyl roof for the win!

Cheaper alternative is to by a piece of white vinyl wrap (about a tenner) and cover the roof that way. Or artex the fucker

Woodchip roof? Sounds a bit.... How shall I put it.... Pineapple? I bet all the cool kids will be doing that next year!

Artex it instead

I shall also replace the headlining with suspended polystyrene tiles.

Good idea - fluorescent tube instead of an interior light? You could claim its some fancy electronic delay shiz while waiting for it to power up.
