Scrapyards. Proper scrapyards. Any left?

Recommended Posts

Hi

Just outside of Cheltenham is, or was, a proper srapyard where you can walk through the gates, step over glass, oily patches and sharp metal and get whatever part you want off a car yourself.

There are, unfortunately few 1980s cars left there but it is nonetheless interesting to go around. I've had all sorts from there. An Allegro distributor, the overdrive relay for a Volvo 240 Automatic and little door stops from a BMW E21. Always busy.

Are these places being shut down due to H&S concerns?

Are there any around Bristol?

I don't know, but near Andover is Richard Noon car spares.  Can get bits off yourself, place is well organised and friendly and prices aren't bad.  Not so much stock though.

I pass Cheltenham sometimes.  Anyone know any more about the one you've described - name, location, is it still useful?

Anyone know the fate of Gosforth Metals.... all i can see is new houses??

West Sleekburn, @Blyth is oldskool - two or three all colocated :)

Couple of old skool ones in Cornwall . No stacked cars and nearly all on concrete though . One is seriously cheap for car parts esp if they aren't metal. Funnily enough they are usually the best price and easiest place to take cars into.

The two or three I frequent regularly are old style scrap yards. Only one is on hard standing and two of them still stack. Don't like yards that do "off the shelf" stuff, mainly because recovering a bit yourself gives you a chance to practice taking it to bits without ruining your own car.

There were two or three co-located (thanks Savvy, I like that word!) behind the Morrisons off the West Mids Spine Road near Bilston.  I'll check next time I'm through there.

I used to get XM bits there and once saw > a shiny high-spec late Rover 800 driven into the yard, speared through the windows with a forklift and hoisted straight onto the pile.  Maybe nobody in the family wanted "grandad's old car"...

That'll be Harry Bucklands...used to be a regular visitor there when I lived in Innsworth, and still pop in when I'm nearby.

I spent many Saturdays in my youth scrabbling around Buckland's yard on the old Cheltenham Road. Used to get some cracking bargains there.

Our nearest decent breakers is PT Moore in Leominster http://www.p-tmoore.co.uk/index.cfm

The modern stuff gets broken up in the main yard which is out of bounds to the general public but they leave classic cars near the entrance so you can pull bit's off yourself.  Last time I was raiding the front belts from a P6 for the 1100 which fit very nicely ( I was tempted to take the whole car).

Are they open Sundays?  :)

EDIT: Bugger, no - just looked!

that must be an old pic as the new houses are not showing just a field on it, I bet its had the heave ho though as it was on soil so sepa would have shut it down.

I use Fainty's in Barrow, which is very much a family-business kind of place.  They don't stack the cars much, but you can stroll around until you find what you need, once you've asked.  Prices seem a touch salty, but that could just be me, being a mingebag, as usual.

I'd be surprised if they shut a yard just because it's not on hard standing. Campbell's is not far from here, in a muddy yard next to a stream he's SEPA approved.

That's probably one of the best around here but stock turnover is pretty high.

Kirby's in Rochford is a great old school scrapyard, just wander in, take the bits off yourself and most bits are either a "tenner mate" or "score mate".

Unfortunately they were taken over recently and all the old stuff (some of which had been in there for decades) was crushed. Still good for modern car bits though.

Silverlake in Shedfield (near Fareham) is thriving and is very much a place you can wander round til you find what you're after. The cars are all on concrete, and where they are stacked, they put them on sort of 'shelving' so can be taken down by the forklift if required.

They go far and wide collecting cars - I saw the truck near Woking the other day, but its almost exclusively moderns.

The prices are pretty steep for spares though, Howards on hayling Island is cheaper but you can go and wander around - they either have it or they haven't. If they have it, they've pulled it themselves - which, as RML2345 says, its handy to 'practice' removal of whatever it is you need before attempting on your own vehicle.

FOAD will be along soon with numerous Scottish scrapyard pictures, with plenty of chod...

They shut down the scrap yard in duns after he was warned to sort out a hard standing, two years went by and he didn't do anything so they shut him down and gave him a big fine,

If Gosforth Metals is no more I'm gonna shoot myself.

looks like they have been moved and went all posh, I bet they had to bail the old stock so probably not much use trying to find old parts from them now.

.

I worked there in the school holidays of 1992 and 1993, great place. Many happy memories of taking old BL tat and mega rare Jap crap such as Cherry F11 coupes and Colt Celestes apart there.

Do they still sell complete cars? I bought a 1975 Avenger for £85 back in 1993, those were the days😃, wish I'd purchased and salted away the white Mk3 Cortina GT as well, somebody else rescued it though. They tried to sell an ultra rare Mazda 1800 saloon for ages, no one wanted it😞.

Peter and Tim (P&T) would always try and sell a classic rather than scrap it, even completely hopeless cases, I also remember a very frilly Mercedes 190 Fintail dragged out of some farmyard, and a Rover 90 that sagged in the middle!

Last time I spoke to them, about five years ago, they were making extra coin out of exporting vans and lorries to Eastern Europe.

LC Hughes in Bicester - a bit crap now though. And Smiths in Bloxham near Banbury - always plenty of old eighties and nineties shit in there. Deatons in Stavely, but prices can be a bit steep which is why I stopped going. And they're miserable sods.

Bucklands is still going, the oldest thing in the yard when I went with a mate a couple of months ago was a very dead TR7 (although there was also an extremely frilly Ford Pop salted away in the garage area). There was some proper rare shite there 20-25 years ago, from memory an Austin Gypsy, Borgward Big Six and a Fiat 2300 estate stand out.

I would dearly love to find a proper scrapyard near me in the Crewe/Nantwich area. Anyone got any leads? The last place I tried was a deeply dodgy generic metal recycling yard

There's also a decent one in Engine road, Loanhead, Edinburgh, had a decent selection of stuff but the owners didn't allow wandering around and definitely no photos allowed...

These are the legal ones, check my thread on Scottish graveyards for the unofficial ones...
