cort16 Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 Ive not had a wheel come off but I have had a wishbone snap and that was a proper pant filler.
xtriple Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 I've had three wheels come off (three different cars I might add) but always the left rear! Still not a great deal of fun but nothing like a front coming off on the motorway! Glad you are all okay.
messerschmitt owner Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 Look Sam, I have told you before, this three wheel malarkey only works with the hydraulic citroens. Glad you are all ok. beko1987 1
Rusty_Rocket Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 Looks like a great little veg-mobile does that, Bek! So sorry to see you had such bad luck.Although it looks ok, i'd wang another leg and wishbone on it, straight from another ZX from the breakers. That way, you can be sure there's nothing nasty hiding anywhere. Grab 4 more wheel bolts and a wing while you're at it and she'll be fighting fit!!
beko1987 Posted June 22, 2014 Author Posted June 22, 2014 We dont have any breakers like that round here, our local place doesnt do anything older than 2000 It all looks ok, doesnt move about or anything, wheel spins nice and freely etc. For now I'm going to put new discs on, build it all back up and see how it goes. If I can fix it by friday, then I will tax it rather than the XM and sell the XM without tax (but with a years MOT as it's booked in for Friday). If it's not fixed then the XM needs taxing, and the ZX can sit for a month until next payday. Just fired off an email to the previous owner to some nice discs and 4 wheel bolts from ebay. Said that if he would contribute with these, I would be happy to find another wing and steelie. Can't be too hard on him, it was my fault for noticing something wrong and not stopping to check ultimatly
saucedoctor Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 All in all, sounds like you were lucky (although you might not feel that way!) Re: the Nokia Bluetooth kit: I had exactly the same one fitted to a W203 and it was fucking rubbish even when it was working. I needed to yell like a parade ground Sergeant Major for the damned thing to hear me, and it "forgot" its pairing. Endlessly.
beko1987 Posted June 22, 2014 Author Posted June 22, 2014 I may fit my old head unit that has phone BT built in then, the pioneer is lacking in inputs, although has a changer in the back. I don't own any CDs anymore...
Bren Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 Love the disc with the flat on it. get it on the living room wall!!!My dad would have ground the burrs of that disc and re - fitted it.
beko1987 Posted June 22, 2014 Author Posted June 22, 2014 Once the paint was off it I was tempted. If SWMBO didn't go ballistic at me and put me off the idea I may well have just fitted the spare with 3 bolts, kicked the wing down and drove on carefully, but not knowing the state of it I opted to spend 8 hours bumming around. The seller has just paypalled me the money for discs and bolts, hopefully they will come pronto so I can Wang them on and go for a quick drive before the tax runs out mat_the_cat 1
Micrashed Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 Lost the wheel on a Marina back in 88 due to a borked trunion. That killed the car. Lost the back wheel on a BX in 2002, that was fine and the car still drove (albeit very wobbily) and that was down to me being a dick and not tightening the studs properly. Carried on with three studs (one off each wheel) for a couple of weeks until I got some replacements off a scrapper.
Hertz Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 That must have been scary and no doubt annoying after the purchase. Looks like you are sorting it out though and it shouldn't take much. Closest I have come is both trailer wheels coming off my dads shite speedboat (It was shite, had a Chrysler 35 hp outboard. No Fletcher Arrowsport or what not here lol) he had back in the day. We were towing it with his Renault 18.
mat_the_cat Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 I may fit my old head unit that has phone BT built in then, the pioneer is lacking in inputs, although has a changer in the back. You can wire into the changer input, in fact you can probably buy cables specifically for the job although I have the pinouts somewhere...
beko1987 Posted June 22, 2014 Author Posted June 22, 2014 The changer works, I just don't do CDs! Want aux in as a minimum. Will pull it out one day and see what inputs are in the back. Seller paypalled me £30 so new discs and bolts should be here early this week. If it goes back together and is fine it will be taxed and I'll get some nice part worms put on the front. If its still shit then it will get a kicking and the xm will see some tax
beko1987 Posted June 22, 2014 Author Posted June 22, 2014 Ah its buried! Ouch all the same though, bet that was a brown trouser moment dropping from that height, ZX volcanes like mine are lower than standard so there wasn't so far to go!
mat_the_cat Posted June 22, 2014 Posted June 22, 2014 Will pull it out one day and see what inputs are in the back. It'll be like this, I have the same one or very similar with a failed tuner.
beko1987 Posted June 23, 2014 Author Posted June 23, 2014 Ah no aux in then. Will try my Sendai halfords special in it when it works mechanically. There is a DAB addon for the pioneer available but it seems to be unobtanium, or cost more than a whole new headunit with modern DAB fitted rather than the first gen shit version that the pioneer box will have. Doubly annoyed I broke my sub too last year as the previous owner had a sub and amp in, but took it out and left all the cables so I could have just plugged it in! Will look into that later...
cms206 Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 I'm surprised its as common as you are all saying, but I suppose it could happen to anything. I've had to tell people that no, old cars r not shit, it could happen to yours! Getting a bit tiresome now. My mate papped the rolling road block as the traffic wombles checked for debris IMG-20140622-WA0000.jpg Calendar shot!
Lacquer Peel Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 Berlingos, Xsaras, and 306s are very similar if you're struggling to find ZX bits.
beko1987 Posted June 23, 2014 Author Posted June 23, 2014 Would steelies be the same? Our local scrapyard may have xsaras and berlingos in, prob be the oldest stuff they have though...
beko1987 Posted June 23, 2014 Author Posted June 23, 2014 Fuck it, just read that the calipers on vented disc cars is different to solid disc calipers... I had vented and bought solid. Interchangeable or have I fucked up? Looking at the dimensions all the numbers match apart from the solid ones being 10mm thin and the vented ones 20mm. Fuck it, thought I was saving money...
rml2345 Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 Christ! Just caught up with this. Glad to hear you're alright though, even if the ZX is a bit bent.
mat_the_cat Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 I know on the BX the part of the caliper which varies depending on disc type, is removable. So you may be able to swap this over between calipers if the ZX ones have a similar design.
beko1987 Posted June 23, 2014 Author Posted June 23, 2014 Ah, sounds like I'll need to wait until Thursday now and buy the correct discs. Fucksticks. Will try the non vented ones and see if they fit though
mat_the_cat Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 Sorry, I was being daft and thought that you'd bought (the wrong) calipers rather than discs. Despite seeing the small flat spot on the disc in the photo!
Luckythirteen Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 Jeez, that's scary! Main thing is you're okay and the car's fixable. Going to check mine after tea...!
beko1987 Posted June 23, 2014 Author Posted June 23, 2014 Its annoying as I don't get paid till Thursday. Apparently there are 2 different calipers for vented vs solid. Arse! Will ecp the vented discs on Thursday and pick them up at lunchtime! Will look at the return policy for the solid ones when they come!
Luckythirteen Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 That's a plus point with ECP: they're usually okay with taking stuff back. If you're feeling lucky, tell them they gave you the wrong ones, you might dodge the 'restocking' surcharge. beko1987 1
