Remember when Cd factors were a thing? These Darracqs are at the Dourdan speed trials in 1903, the cowls reduced 'windage' as they used to call it back then.

I remember the streamlined trains of the 30s. As I understand it, they bolted the streamline body onto the existing train, and the increased weight, more than cancelled out any increase in speed due to aerodynamics . Or is that an urban myth?

True in at least some cases. NS series 3700 "Potvis" was heavier, slower and less fuel efficient than the non-streamlined ones.

1971-2 I’d say. There’s an Avenger (intro 1970) but no Mk3 Cortina (73).

There's a Volvo 145 as well.

Where?

I was wondering about that one too, but don't think it's a 145 - rear side window looks divided?

The rear side window was divided on some early ones.

MK3 cortina launched October 1970.

23 of October to be precise. Would have taken a little for the first new cars to percolate out - and given no leaves on the trees - I'd guess winter 1970.

The LMS Princess Coronation class weighed about 3 tons more streamlined than unstreamlined. As the loco and train together would weigh 350-600 tons that probably didn't make much difference, whereas having the front properly shaped to cleave through the air did make quite a difference once the train was travelling at high speed.

I bet it made no measurable difference at all!

Like every other body-kit, just about image.  Looking faster is actually much easier to sell than being faster.

I cheated a bit, and checked what the original source said: Bull Field in Hartlepool, 1971. Of course, it could have been early in the year, January/February maybe?
