Witney car auction ,known as WOMA have a Police auction every 3 or 4 weeks, last night a very stupid person almost convinced himself a 2008 TDV8 ex- royal protection Range Rover would be a good idea at £10k, luckily it started at 12 and didn't sell at 13.250,so I didn't have to justify it to 'er indoors as my new work car.

Recent bargains bought by my brother were a 59 plate Mondeo 2.2 TDcI Zetec dog van for about £3k.He spent a grand on it( complete interior, filling 14 holes etc) and just about cleared a grand when he sold it- lot of effort though.

About a year ago he got an exHendon driving school Octavia VRs that was immaculate and went like shit off a Teflon shovel, can't remember prices but I think he did quite well out of it.

X5s ,Range Rovers and plain 5 series seem to go for more than you'd pay for a non- Police car.

The biggest bargains are the ones where it'd be too much effort to get them nice again, last Thursday there were some nasty 58/09 Zafiras that must have had some sort of screen fitted in the dash, but now just have 2' square hole with wires taped off and seats that look like a dogs eaten them. Also some genius specified 19" wheels that have been crunched against every kerb in London for 6 years.

The traffic ones and panda cars must see a hard life. I know they're supposed to be regularly maintained but 170,000 miles of going over speed bumps at 70mph can't be good for any car.

I mentioned it to my dad I was think of buying one while back saying "oh but they're well maintained.". Having worked on them on them in the past he just pissed himself laughing and told me to avoid.

I had an ex driving school 827si manual some years ago, still regard it as one of the best cars i've ever owned, 145 and still pulling.

Someone bought an 06 plate Subaru Legacy 3 litre manual spec B saloon yesterday on the bay, full plain clothes car blue with black leather, for £1950, looked a good un, thats got to be a bargain.

Anyone care to explain why....the ex police car sellers near Huddersfield often state the VED of some of their ex police cars regd after March 06, T5's etc, are special case and have a lifetimes VED of £250ish, not the near on £500 that it should be...presumably this is right or they wouldn't state it, but why?

I bought 'An Englishman in new York' on ebay and quite frankly it was terrible. I don't know what I was thinking.

I went to a police auction once, bought a PCSO and a chief superintendent, thought I could keep one in the car while using the A frame. They were both wankers though so I put them back in the following week and lost £800 in total including doughnut costs,  NEVER BUY A RETIRED COPPER they are more bother than theyre worth

Polis motors are some right weird spec cars as well, someone on an Astra forum I used to go on had an ex marked one, it had the same alloys, all round electric windows and half leather seats as my own Design spec Astra, but otherwise was like the base model Life spec inside. Why get half leather added to the spec of a cop car when the model its based on has full cloth before they arse about with it? :S

I really would love a silver/dark blue/black 57 plate onwards 5 series saloon (fuck knows what E designation it is) with some extra roof aerials and a reg beginning SF as that's what most unmarked traffic cars round here are/were and itd be funy to see everyone on the motorway slow down and/or pull in when they clock you, hell even keep the blue lights behind the grille and flick them on when you clock some chavs/neds racing each other on the motorway at night in their VXRs or Type Rs too see the look on their faces when they think you are the bizzies. That would provide hours of laughter IMO.

Motorway cars are less of a risk.

Section cars ( the ones you see around town with the blue lights) are to be avoided like a UKIP party conference.

I got a 1990 reg'd ex- Royal Ulster Constabulary Escort 1.6L in 1993. 20k ish miles, about 900 quid. It was in brilliant nick, and had no holes in the dash. It had been a CID car in Carrickfergus, so no siren, lights, livery or armour. Even had wheeltrims. I made a nice few quid on that.

I really wanted a Capri, but the Police here were still using them at the time.

In or around 2000/2001 a mate of mine was at another Government Disposal auction. Among the lots were brand new mark 5 Cortina bodyshells, new and complete-with-ancillaries Rover V8 engines on SUs, LT77 gearboxes and some EFi Austin-Rover O Series donks.

Never had much to with plod motors, or plod come to that.   However, a friend of my parents was a traffic cop at the end of the 1960s and I remember two rides of highly illicit nature, one in a 2.5 Pi Estate (on trial, lost  out to Volvo 145) and a shorter but hugely impressive blart in a Mk 2 Lotus Corty.    I  suspect the man had the knack of remaining within the law yet still managing to hugely impress a 9 year old kid.   He was fully qualified in all aspects of pursuit etc. yet always bought the lowliest cack for his own use - 100E Pop, 1159cc HA Viva, 1300 Dolly etc.

These's a scotchoplod sell of motors at BCA in Edinburgh on the 8th. Shock horror no Volvos. Lots of shagged looking diesel focus estates though..

Is there any other kind?

Apparently the Focus estate Dog van conversions are quite popular as the cages and air con for the four legged passengers are desirable extras for Boarding kennel types and dog owners in general.

I should imagine the leather is easier to wipe puke etc off than cloth, which would retain the smell. Not being the seventies, there's probably no vinyl option.

I bought Gordon Sumner for £23.00 in an auction several years back - very disappointing (one can only listen to renditions of "Roxanne" so many times!) and so he's under the patio now *sigh* (and you hadn't realised you'd not seen him in da meeja recently?? ;) ). Under the fourth flag up, second across *ahem*...

Don't forget the ultimate gift an ex-police car gives - the force is always with you...

And (talking of "the force") it's Darth Vader's birthday on Sunday as well ;) .

Had a mk2 Granada 2.8 that was ex plod. Wierd spec, proper poverty type with a 4 speed manual box. Dear God, it flew! I wasn't the first owner post police, the first had attempted to disguise the fact it had been with a respray to cover all the holes in the roof etc. He'd left the interior roof lining as was... complete with zip from side to side!

Went to a few Customs and Excise auctions back in the 90's. 3 series Bmw for £50? It was only about 5 years old and quite pleasant but apart from a few tatty vans (that got large amounts of bids) it was the only vehicle there and surrounded by loads of computers and general crap.

I was also thinking about any vehicle's that the police seize.

Do they all get crushed now or do they still sell them off?
