  1. 1. Would a separate FS/wanted section be a useful addition to Autoshite?

    • YES! Keep all the shite needing a new home in the same place.

    • NO! I like randomness and I know what a 'for sale' thread looks like...

I'd be too scared to try to sell anything to anyone on here, or buy off anyone else for that matter, due to the need for some form of personal interaction. Although I did manage to buy a van years ago, where I posted a cheque to the vendor and he dropped it off, shoving the keys and paperwork through the letterbox, so we never actually met.

I like the fact that For Sale adverts turn into a bit of a discussion. Not sure if this irritates the bejesus out of the sellers but it makes them interesting to read despite the fact I don't want to buy anything. I tend not to browse the for sales on R-R since it's regulated in such a strict fashion fashion and a comment of "oh wow, I used to have one of them" will have you led to the gas chamber. And a comment suggesting the price is crazy would have a firing squad waiting in there for you..

Any way of having them on the main board but with a different icon next to them?

It's a shame we can't decide this per user - I could have everything lumped in together, another user could have them in different areas.

I have installed but not enabled it yet as there is much setting up to be done.

But you can see what it looks like by clicking on ShiteAds link in links bar.

Hey, that looks good!

The seller's reputation being forum likes is funny. Finally the mark of a trustworthy seller is the number of well received jokes and daft photoshops on a car forum.

I think that'd be ideal. Have everything on the main board, but somehow highlight only For Sale ads if you wanted to. Maybe if folk started with FS: it'd be easy enough to do? Or select a 'for sale' option.

It's still a valid point that they can drop off the bottom of the first page, where nobody ever looks (because just like Google, if it's not on the first page it's irrelevant). So I like the idea of a method of JUST highlighting the adverts for those in the market for chod, or having them mixed in with the rest of the forum in a different colour or with an icon.

However I accept that it does depend on what IPB can do, not out to make this a shedload of hard work for Davebfourtyseven.

It's very smart looking Dave but a bit 'fussy' if you don't mind me saying. I think a simple clip on section for vehicles for sale and wanted then leave the thread we already have for non-vehicle sales.

Posted

I defo think this is a good idea, if I was after a shite motor/something cheap/a runner then I'd definitely rather buy from on here than egay, bum tree, swapz or any of these kind of websites where the sellers are at best oblivious and at worst fraudsters and can't string a sentence together or spell their own name. I like the fact most on here are honest to the stage they would point out silly daft little faults that most wouldn't give a toss about, I like attention to detail and folk who don't feel the need to lie that a £400 car is showroom condition to try and flog it.

If you want to sell a car can't we just have a Retro Rides style heading for the adverts on the main board, Eg:

**FS** Triumph Acclaim HLS - £600 Ipswich

Instead of some daft long winded heading that makes no sense until you open the thread?.

It'd be nice to go to one place to see what's for sale, rather than trawling through, finding something, and then 'oh bugger, I missed that'.

The ads can still have comedic value attached.

Sorry about the bold writing fellas, it does this to me randomly.

I agree that the OMG NOT THIS OR THAT and deliberate spelling errors wears a little thin. It's possible to be amusing without tedious.

Also, what I do like about keeping them on the main board is that there is sometimes a nice trail of work done or even a purchase thread because it just gets updated with the details of the sale.

Posted

But surely we'll still have the interesting car for sale threads on the main board, just now we'll also have an outlet to try and flog a centre console for a Horseless GLX as well.

In my humble opinion sub sections suck. Just joined a Renault forum which is admittedly an extreme but there's so many sections I get lost and must miss stuff which I would be interested in should I find it.

Not read through all the replies here so it may have been said already though a compromise could be a 'shite trader' section on the main board. Much like the bay tat thread only shiters hawking their own tired autoshite where we could all to take the piss, advise, dream of owning and perhaps even make a purchase. It is often the way that I personally miss for sale adds so this would work for me keep abreast of things which I know I wouldn't necessarily do if it weren't the main board. Maybe that's just me, does the current sub section get used much?

*Yes, just been in there and it seems to be used a fair bit, even made a post.

Voted No.

Then I saw this and wish I had voted yes! Its quite neat and tidy and still has enough freedom for us all to fuck it up with our stupid humour.

I wouldn't have bought the Volvo if it hadn't been on the main board, I wasn't looking for a car and wouldn't have bothered looking in a Classified section.

There does seem to have been a flurry of cars for sale recently, I think it's just the time of year for taking stock and making changes.

The Austin Counties forum is exactly like that, which is why I don't use it.

I've had an idea ... this may be complete tosh, so please feel free to say so if you think it is ...

How about leaving everything where it is, but having a "For Sale" tag you can add to a post, as suggested earlier in this thread by Mr Ruffgeezer.

Then Having a sticky at the top of the section that has links for everything with the tags, ideally one that updates automagically when adding or removing the tags - Mr BeforeSeven, I'm not sure if this is possible with this forum or not, so feel free to shoot it down if it can't be done

That way if you're looking for a car you can look in that thread and everything is listed. It also leaves FS posts in the general domain so people can't avoid them :-)

No.

It's not broken so don't fiddle with it.

The silly section was a Good Thing but more than two sub-forums and Autoshite loses some of it's carefree charm IMHO.

If the add on isn't installed and working in three days, you might as well scrap the site*

*i don't think anyone has used that joke for at least 40hrs.

I was under the impression that it would have just been a pinned thread up at the top of this board with a clicky link to sellers advert.

(Even though I can't do clicky links).

That classifieds script looks really good, an impressive addition to the site.

However IMHO we need to be on guard against the temptation to use something just because it looks slick and cool. Sometimes the simple, low-tech solution is better. It's the Autoshite way!

I agree with those who have said that the replies to a for sale post are a large part of the fun, especially since on this forum we don't get cyber-lynched for adding comments. The classifieds section would look good but be dry and uninteresting to the 95% of members who aren't seriously interested in purchasing any given car.

Then there's the potential to share knowledge: I have personally learned things from for sale threads, when someone says "but aren't these vulnerable to widget fatigue?" and gets replies along the lines of "yes but if you tighten the wibble flange you can keep the widget in place". In other words, as well as being a classified ad, a for sale thread is a good place for humour and banter, and also informative discussion about the car being sold. Whereas if the proposal was implemented, it really would be just a classified ad, and much would be lost.

I vote no, but I won't cry myself to sleep if the answer is yes.

If it does go ahead can we call it "Scumtree"?

I think that having a separate 'ShiteAds' section would make things easier for people looking to buy, as ads on the main forum disappear onto page 2 within hours.

A parts/tools sub-section would also be useful. I'm sure many of us have loads of old parts in the shed that fit cars we haven't owned for over a decade !

I agree that any further sub-sections would overcomplicate things. We could continue using the current wanted/offered topic for non-automotive stuff, perhaps it could return to the 'dark side' of the forum as well ?

I am slowly working on this.

Health not amazing at moment so slow going.

But

I think that we will keep Classified  ads thingy so if anyone wants to use  it they can.

Trying to sort something on these lines, not as easy as it sounds...

Dave. Can we add a weblink into the ShiteAd so that we can create:

A forum thread

A Shite Ad

And link them to each other.

Thusly:

Those that want to browse ads can browse ads

Those that want to read threads can read threads

Those that want a linked discussion about their Shite Ad can have one.

Here is my tuppence worth.   I like the randomness of the current thread chains.   The segregation of autoshite and non-autoshite seems to have the potential already to cause Dave a bit of a problem (or at least the possibility of  upsetting somebody) already.   To try and channel threads that may have begun as a trade subject back and forth can only add to this.   Most sales posts end up being banterage which might  be faintly annoying to the seller / wanter but seems to be the way of this Forum and something I enjoy.   Its fairly easy to see what is up for sale even with a busy "front page".    There is still the existing Third Way of for sale/wanted threads of course....
