Bought this on yesterday from an autoshite member, engine isn't running right and a couple of wheel bearings are shot but otherwise it's great, bodywork is fantastic.

Sunroof is leaking a bit so will need to get round to fixing that.

I think the engine issue might be due to a fuel leak from the pump diaphragm on the carb, so will order a rebuild kit and see if that helps any.

I've been directed to such an item on the Renault owners club facebook page.

Bodywork is great as you can see, it will be getting thoroughly undersealed shortly so it lasts, wonderfully comfy and also extremely quirky.

Since it has mot and tax I'm planning to drive it as soon as its fixed.

Was also surprised that the wheels are 4 stud as was expecting them to be 3 stud.

I like the 18.  Not the most exciting design to come out of the Renault studios in the '70s, but a comfortable and thoroughly competent car that can still easily mix it with modern traffic.  Bit like a Solara really.

I'm so glad to see this saved, I had my fingers crossed when I saw the post.

Well done!

No interior pics unfortunately, I'll get some next time I'm at the car.

I've wanted one for a while and couldn't pass it up at that price + located so close.

Well done i hesitated was gonna try talking sweet nothings to me other half but glad it went to a good home well done.

Aye, good man for taking this on. Should be a worthwhile project, though I'd think carefully about using specific underseal as it can create more problems than it solves.

Very glad I bought it, I was hesitant at first but just thought fuck it.

I was planning on using the dinitrol wax stuff, as I know it's a great deal better than waxoyl.

Well done that man.  I really like 18s - we had12s and 14s as a kid and I yearned after the upgrade, but it never happened.  I think the proportions are spot on and some of the styling details are really neat, especially on the early ones.  Look forward to this one being up and about again.

I saw this advertised on the FB page, good to see it's stayed in the AS collective. :)

The early ones had three stud wheels. The GTS I owned on a W plate was 3 stud.

IIRC the GTX and Turbo were 4 stud.

get yrr self joined on RenaultForum.... they're even more sarcastic than A$ wallahs  ;)

I'm knownClone over there, on account of my engine being a Clio D4F.... but don't admit to knowing me O.K.

Must have been a popular colour.

I had a TL a couple of years ago but that had three studs.

use Rustbuster - just as good as Dinitrol but cheaper

Gr9 purchase. I was really pleased with the diesel one when I had it. I particularly enjoyed the beanbag seats and steering wheel so big it cut off the circulation to my legs.

Great purchase.

There used to be two of these used as dailys near me until a couple of years ago.

One was a black saloon, W reg with a matt black stonechip tidemark around it that seemed to get bigger every year! It was well fucked though last time I saw it, rot almost everywhere.

The other was a B reg estate diesel in silver that looked very tidy. Not seen either of them for a while now. Hopefully the silver one survived somewhere but im sure the black one has been scrapped by now.

Yours looks in superb nik, good colour too.

Carb kit ordered, starting to get hallucinations of driving down the road listening to this

Carb kit arrived today

I didn't change the carb to inlet gasket because it doesn't seem bad and "if it ain't broke don't fix it". (Plus I couldn't be arsed).

I did however change the needle valve, pump diaphragm and the carb lid to body gasket.

The pump diaphragm had a small pin hole in it, when pressed with the cover off I could see the fuel seeping through, this is obviously what was causing the fuel leakage, but would also result in a loss of pressure when pumped.

The carb lid to body gasket had a piece missing and had been repaired with silicon sealant.... This was on the edge of one of the chokes so would have been an air leak as it looked shit.

I'm not entirely sure if the car is fixed, I have a long driveway to test it on but it only allows me to get into 2nd gear, and being 20 can't afford to insure it until I get paid at the end of the month. I also can't remember what it was like before...  It seems to drive fine in the limited space I have to test it though.

On idle when the throttle is pressed the engine responds instantly, I seem to recall it bogged down briefly before.

Will adjust the valve clearances and change the oil and then hopefully it should be fixed.

Need to change the wheel bearings but need to obtain, or make a puller of sorts first.

Nice work man. Good to see some good news on the Carb front for a change.

This needs painted by hand, springs chopped and a nice set of wheels fitted. Those hubcaps are shit!

Well done on getting it going, you'll need to bring it down to the next meet...

Posted

The hubcaps are awfully shit, I'll be removing them and running the bare steels for a while, but don't want to do anything to compromise comfort, so I think spring chopping is a no no.

I might get round to respraying the bonnet and front end when the warmer weather comes too.

If the next meet is after the 27th then I'll bring it provided its not fucked still.

A coil off the front hasn't made any difference to mine apart from making it the coolest looking r18 in the UK.

Posted

It does look a lot better, they seem to sit really high at the front.

Might consider it but I want to get some mk1 espace or 18 turbo wheels first.

If you paint the 'spoke's of the wheel trims and the recesses that line up with the wheel nuts satin black those wheel trims would look considerably better.

Potentially but I have a resentment of plastic wheel trims!
