19 Years of Tin Snail - Back to normality

Hopefully the extra week might encourage you to go back and redo the bits you bodged earlier ;-)

Looking good. I hope those cavities have had a liberal coating of PleaseDontRust coating by now ;)

Genuine question, honestly not being funny, but why the rush to get it back on the road?

Do it once, and do it right, Shirley? :-D

Also, there's a 2CV run in North Yorkshire on 8th Jan.

I'm sure there's one every year ;) #lameexcuse

Anyway, just so there's no confusion, I'm not having a dig. Not in a position to as I'm Mr I. Tardy...

But I won't have French electrics dissed, they're nowhere near Italian...

Both front doors now built up and fitted.

At the stage now where I can't make much more progress until I get more bits/fixings. I need an offside rear wing, but there's no point fitting the rear door that side (which takes seconds anyway) or hood/boot assembly until that wing is fitted, as it just makes it more of a pain in the arse if I fit things that will get in the way. I need some new spire clips and screws before I can fit the grille to the bonnet, which also means I can't fit the number plate (well I can, but again, it's easier to fit grille before number plate, albeit only mildly). I can't fit the front seat belts as bits are on the way, and can't fit the nearside rear door as I don't have the correct window seal. I have (pretty easily) fitted the window to the offside door.

So, I think I'm going to just tidy up bits I've already done. My lovely* wiring is going to get wrapped in proper loom tape, in the hope it'll keep the connections free of muck. I may even start the cavity waxing, though I ideally need the car out of the garage to do that, and it's pretty wet today. Typically.

Bonnet is on for a trial fitting.

Sadly, I'm missing the catch receiver - presumably still on the old bonnet, which was deemed scrap. I'll add it to the list of bits I need to find...

I have fitted the VIN plate at last, and am about to fit my 'rubbish' dampers. To be honest, I keep getting sea sick every time I clamber in the car to do some work, so it'll be nice to have at least some damping effect...

I'm off on a major part haul expedition on Wednesday, so have been cracking on with minor jobs. Mudflaps fitted.

These are rivetted on from the factory, but I don't have a rivet gun, so 5mm set screws it is for now. I've doused them in wax to try and stop them just falling apart - also gave the entire underside a blast, especially where bolts and screws are fitted.

I also connected up the windscreen washer. Exciting stuff eh?

Nice flaps

The fit of these wings doesn't seem ideal. I'd hoped to avoid fitment issues by buying a pair of old second hand wings, but they don't fit that we'll, which leads me to suspect they may actually be pattern parts.

Do they have an extra beading panel running the lip of the arch? If not likely pattern ones.

Ah, they do not. Oh well. Still a lot cheaper than a pair of brand new pattern wings!

Amazing how much time is eaten up by small jobs. Had a good few hours on the car today fitting all three mirrors, some more door furniture, more dash fittings and putting a decent set of wheels and tyres on (she's been on storage-only rubber up to this point). Oh, and I greased the kingpins, driveshafts and track rod ends while I'd got the wheels off.

A friend of mine is building a Burton - just passed its two year mark! And that's with a donor car sitting on the drive with two engines and gearboxes in the garage too.

I think Citroën themselves omitted this after the 1985 model range, or thereabouts. Along with many more cost savings.

The shape of the front wings changed subtly down the years, find a pair of 60s ones and the front vertical surface is much more angled backwards, so a less bluff to the air.

Maybe a dab of red (pink? ;-)) paint to stop the white body from showing through would help visually?

Oh believe me. That'll be the least of this car's worries cosmetically.

Back to work today, so trying to balance writing features and sending emails with tinkering. This is why I've been rushing so far. I know time is going to be very tight this year. Still, I managed to get the hood refitted, fix the boot lock and get the new grille and mesh fitted. Proper bling!

I'm actually quite annoyed at how the well the paint has come out. I expected a shabby finish, so didn't go crazy with prep. Now, that dent just below the RH headlamp is irritating me, as is the somewhat lumpy finish on that side (due to removing some, but not all of the previous paint as I chased the rust out). Time will tell how long this paint job lasts, but I'm very impressed so far. Hoping to get the number plate fitted this afternoon (more drilling - eesh!).

I was going to screw the number plates on, but I thought I'd check my number plate mounting tape first of all. Ok so far...

I'm going to leave it over night and see if it's still fitted. If it is, hoorah! If not, I'll reluctantly drill some holes, but can at least use the tape to hold the plate where it needs to be. Don't they look gorgeous though? Good ol' DMB.

..I wonder - would the number plate not look neater under the bumper, in front of the white box - to leave the bonnet less cluttered ?

I imagine it'd last five minutes, if that! The bonnet is designed to take the number plate. It looks right there, even if UK number plates are a bit larger than the French ones the panel is designed for. I have a severe dislike of 2CVs with the front number plate mounted anywhere else.
