19 Years of Tin Snail - Back to normality

I think I'll leave well alone. Compression is up to about 150psi each side, which is what it should be. There is still some leakage - I can actually hear it with the manifolds off - but it isn't dropping anywhere near as quickly. Will hope Italian tune ups can sort it out.

So much for leaving well alone. We got the heads off to change the seals both sides, and found water damage in the bores. So, we pulled the 652 barrels and pistons from the broken engine and swapped the lot, including cylinder heads, onto the new crankcase. The crankshaft in the newer motor feels much better - lots of jiggly conrod action on the old one. All back together, test drives concluded. A touch of pinking, so I need to reset the ignition timing then, hopefully, I'm done. Had helpful assistance today!

Tomorrow, the journey begins, with a 200-mile drive to Cambridgeshire to break up the drive to Harwich. Ferry departs 11pm Friday.

Top work! at least at the end of this whole escapade you get to keep your 652cc Power :)

did you remember to stick the bigger jets back in the carb? I feel like that could be something that could be overlooked especially given the urgency of everything!

Yes, bigger jets went in. Good thing about having some help is that we could do two jobs at once!

Timing sorted, even replaced a couple of dodgy bolts holding the fan shroud on. Calling her good to go! 200 miles tomorrow, handily in the direction of a 2CV Specialist! Haven't done any packing, so I'll be hurling stuff into bags and wondering what I've forgotten. As long as my passport is there, not sure I care about much else!

What an amazing turnaround. I doubt I would have persevered with the looming departure date, but you did it. Fantastic work!

Thanks. A friend is building a BMW-powered 2CV for the trip. He hasn't driven it yet, but it is running! He once ended up fitting an engine on the night before the ferry, so I think it must just be a 2CV thing.

I will try to update this thread while I go, but I'm not sure how much time I'll have for internetting. Maybe I'll go all traditional with a post-event report like the olden days.

Do you mind if 'we' (probably me and a few others) share any social meedia stuff on the trip here? Conscious that not all shiters dig the medium of Twitter and Facebook etc. Worked quite well last year when you and Rich were going through the Balkans...

Of course that would rather de-value the post event write-up!

No, that's fine. Like you say, I think it worked well. I can then 'fill in the dots' when I'm back. Cheers.

Bon chance, courage!

what could go wrong?

No, don’t answer that,

My friends Jerry and Gita are going in his Burton kit car. Red, British reg. say hello if you bump into them.

what is your route and timing thereof if any shitters or hubnutters want to wave/gesticulate at you to speed you along?

Posted

We'll be travelling back from Brittany via channel tunnel on Saturday so if any 2CV'ers see a Brit C4GP waving at you that will be us, have a great trip all!

Mostly entirely unknown. I don't even know what time I'm leaving the house today yet...

Balls of steel Wobbler. I don't think I would.

Rainham to Thurrock is quite enough, takes about 10 - 15 minutes.

First 200 miles could have gone better. Fan fell off after 198 miles and broke itself. At least I was close to my destination...

Spare fan now fitted.

Are those made out of Bakelite? The brownish colour reminds me of Bakelite switches.

Great repair series by the way. I know I couldn't have done that in the same space of time!

A sheared pulley, or just lost the bolt?

Came loose. Bolt still there. My idiocy continues. If that has failed on the motorway, that would have been the end of another motor...

I sheared a fan casting in Dover once. Didn’t realise- it was quiet. Only when I got home again to Hillingdon at the time, did the oil pressure light come on. Mind you it was -3 in December. This time of year, maybe not so lucky.

going anywhere off this island - rule is if you make it to the ferry without issue

no problem

(unless for you fishguard :D )

last night in Blighty for a bit then? We'll keep the Hob-Nobs in the fridge while you're away.

31 degrees in Zagreb tomorrow.

Mind out for sunburn 'over there'

Good luck. What a palaver. Looking forward to YouTube updates.

Do these 2cv engines rapidly overheat when there is no cooling fan? I'd thought on the motorway there would have been plenty of airflow to keep things ok.

Posted

They get pretty hot, pretty quickly. Cylinder heads especially. Especially as the stuck fan tends to then block airflow. Without cowlings, as on many kit cars, they're ok. I was pretty lucky.

Tinkering went well today. Fresh oil, valve clearances checked, new tyres, tracking adjusted and picked up a few more spares.

Yes, checking the tracking with wood!

Now approaching Harwich.
