In a lake for over 60 years, and starts up.

I was reading about a Russian T34 tank captured by the Germans that was dumped in a lake in 1944 that was recently discovered. It was hauled out in amazingly good nick considering, more amazingly though the bloody thing started up again straight away. It made me want to buy a Lada to be honest. There's that scene I believe in Woody Allen's 'Sleeper' where his Beetle starts up after god knows how long, but has anyone here got any experience of a vehicle being hauled out of a lake (or similar) and firing up again?

The T34 video is here, quite amazing stuff.

Was it a diesel?!

I thought they ran on avation fuel or something?

Would have thought that would have gone funny years ago.

Well diesels generally cope better with being flooded than petrols...but THAT much?

I'm going to try this with my Citroen.

Any Citroen that starts straight away is worthy of it's own new coverage

I actually do, but since nobody ever believes such stories, I'm not going to tell it.

To be fair I think they had to change the fluids but apart from that they stuck on a battery and of it went. Apart from some of the small wheels in the tracks that had badly corroded because they had magnesium in them it drove well rio! They have recently dragged some really interesting stuff from those Russian Boggs including some otherwise extinct German armour and a crashed hurricane complete with its incredibly well preserved pilot. Bit gruesome that one though

My local vintage car club in New Zealand told me a story whereby a local farmer had bought two new Model T's and kept the other as a spare that he never used and stashed in a barn somewhere...they were still looking for it...

ESSEXvintage001.jpg

The same guys got this out of 60 year storage..an Essex ,,,the bloke told me his father who was 96 at the time had kept it in a container in Nelson..and he'd quietly extracted it without telling him!..they were gonna leave it pretty much as is..and it was running.

A farmer in NZ I know of (his wife taught me in high school)had a 1920's Oakland in a barn. It had been used during WW2 for the purpose of getting it's fuel ration which was then put into the family car. That Oakland then sat until the mid 1960's until it was taken out and got running by a friend of my father. I last saw it in his garage at that time, but it was later restored fully and is probably still about.

This is pretty gruesome but a bit weird. Police testing out some new Sonar gear they had found 2 cars in a lake right next to each other. They presumed they'd been stolen and dumped but when pulled the cars out both had 3 bodies in them. One was from the 50' and one was from the 70's. Apparantly 3 kids (in the Camero) just disappeared off the face of the earth one day and 1970 and no-one ever knew what happened to them.

Yeah I remember the fuss that caused - and is still causing to this day.  A lot of people got extremely worked up about the whole shenanigans behind its burial, the 50 years it spent in a leaky concrete bunker and the attempts to spruce it up a bit with some chemical rust remover.  It's all become rather weird with conspiracy theories flying around and arguments about what should be done with it.

I remember reading this, a few weeks back. I hope more information is discovered and released.

The Camaro was one year old when it went swimmin'. Very gruesome and interesting.

Not found in a lake, but still a cool start up.

There was a (brown?) Volvo (240?) estate in an issue of Jalopy that was returned to the road after being submerged (in a pond?). The interior was dried out using one of those portable (industrial?) space heaters. As a result of the excessive heat the dashboard ended up a bit droopy (in the middle?). I read it a long time ago - hence I can't recall the exact details (can you forgive me?).

"Jimmy Allen Williams, 16, and his friends Thomas Michael Rios, 18, and Leah Gail Johnson, 18, disappeared on On Nov. 20, 1970.

Jimmy, who had a part time job at a grocery store, had bought himself a brand new Camaro muscle car six days earlier."

How the hell could he afford that?
