Pics or it didn't happen! Nice choice, by the way - although it might not seem like it at the moment!

Don't think this was on the blue; I picked it up from an 80-year old woman in Kilmarnock. It's home and running beautifully apart from all it's faults, of which there are many.

So, yes... finally got the pictures downloaded. Went on Saturday to collect this 98k mile 760 Turbo saloon. Rough as arses outside, pretty clean inside, solid in places that matter and mechanically sound. Ish.

Four miles into the journey, the brake behind this wheel siezed on. Much smoke and burning of brakes was had.

The RAC was called. To pass the time, I started to peel Sikaflex off the roof.

This went better than anticipated. The RAC phoned back and said they were just going to send a truck. A truck arrived.

Irritatingly the 760 decided it was quite happy now, and drove merrily onto the truck with not a hint of binding or smoke. It also did it at the other end...

So, the car itself...

As I was saying, fairly solid, last owned by an 80-year old woman who had owned it for years and years. Mechanically there is very little wrong, it does seem to have a slight water leak but apart from the binding brakes it's pretty much all there; no rattles or bangs from underneath, gearbox whines slightly but TADTS, turbo whistles merrily and it pulls like a fuggin train compared to the n/a 2.3 in the Council Estate. Various things don't work, some may well be coaxed back into life, some may be dead for ever. It's MOT'd to next May, but frankly I'm fucked if I know how. Some broken bits include...

Lots of patina came with it. Some photos of that, and some other shots of it, are here.

Good stuff, looks like a worthy member of the Autoshite scruffy 760 MASSIV !

Don't worry about the fancy electrical bits not working, they never do. However, they are supposed to be easy to fix - check the brickboard/volvoclub FAQ for more.

Binding brakes are most probably due to dry/rusty slider pins - be VERY gentle when dismantling because they have a habit of snapping inside the caliper carrier. If this happens, they are a royal PITA to sort out - ask me how I know !

These things must getting mega rare now. All the stuff that don't work probably will do with lots of time, effort and hopefully little money. Get it working well keep the patina and enjoy it

I have plenty of lurve for old rwd volvos, turbos are starting to get a bit of a following too

I've been looking forward to the conclusion of this collection tale - well done, looks like you've scored a good one.  I hope this doesn't spell the end for the council estate!

Oddly enough the Council Estate and this 760 were both registered 1.1.88 so they're exactly the same age. The Council Estate celebrated the new arrival by failing it's MOT thusly...

001 Offside headlight aim too low

002 Battery insecure

003 Nearside windscreen washer provides insufficient washer fluid

004 Nearside (inner rack end) steering pivot point has excessive play

005 Offside (inner rack end) steering pivot point has excessive play

006 Nearside brake linkage has abnormal movement of levers indicating maladjustment

007 Exhaust has a major leak of exhaust gases

008 Exhaust system not adequately supportes.

004 and 005 are causing headaches...

Not a biggie, recon racks are readily available for under £100 and can be replaced with only a small amount of swearing on naturally aspirated redblocks.

Ah a PROPER post 86 760 with the semi-concealed wipers etc. They are quite hard to spot now.

Massive approval from me!

That looks awful. Therefore I am mega jealous, especially of the caramac leather insides.

Good shout on the brickboard FAQ as well, it is most useful for mending the 700 series electrical woes.

Rover headunit in an ovlov? Does it work?

I am afraid not.

Canny purchase on this owld snotter. My mate would approve.

They are all he ever concerns himself with and ever will.

The Rover head unit is coded and came with no code. It turns on and that's more or less it. I have a Volvo radio cassette with code to fit at some point.

Posted

A google search should be able to identify an appropriate decoder for the Rover radio.

Alternatively, I could be persuaded to part with the factory-fitted, top-of-the-range, double din radio-cassette that was in mine.

PROGRESS!: Dave Fowler came over last night and did magic with the brakes; looks like new pads and fairly fresh discs up front. Daily use on my five mile commute will see what it decides to throw at me.

Much fucking about saw the bonnet open using the recently discovered secondary mechanism (cable ties under the hinged front grille :/) and consequently the discovery of why the aircon is inoperative... Because the pump, in it's entirety, is missing. If everything is left on auto the blowers work occasionally which is some more progress* but no change on getting the drivers seat mobile again.

What is it about Volvo bunnets that all the lacquer comes off them?

Anyway, who cares when the interior is so delicious looking. Look forward to seeing it at a future Scotoshite meet. :)

Yeah, some people obviously don't give a shit about the interior but I'd rather have a load of lacquer peel than buggered seats or whatever.
