No pictures but a couple of guys I knew back in the early 80s "rallied" an Allegro

Their previous attempts at rallying were in a MkI Cortina.

the mk5 2dr rally car NHK 244 V was based on the SA cortina XR6 homologation papers, its spec was for the time pretty impressive with 4 wheel discs, turreted 5 linked atlas ,triple down draughts giving in the region of 240bhp.

it was originaly campaigned buy julian raymond from late 80 through 81. competed on the manx international several times its been off the road since 89 various stories surround its currant state/ownership with several people claiming to own it.

its sister car KLM 123 was a 4dr again built to 3.0 XR6 spec but this time std in mech spec this car does still exist.

as said both cars main prob was understeer. with slightly better results in tarmac events.

the XR6 was pretty successful in its native sa as a circuit racer.

been on NHK's trail for 20 years would love to have it in my collection.

Wartburg 353... Packing the legendary DKW-derived 1-litre, three cylinder, two stroke engine. In rally trim they apparently used three Bing carburettors and a massive expansion chamber to produce well above 100HP !

And, most importantly, they came with a matching transporter :

I watched that car on the RAC rally many years ago - I have  a sneaking feeling the engine was out of another Rally car

The Monza in the middle has hisappeared without a trace having been sold by the last owners widow - when last seen it was fitted with a 3.6L 24V engine running throttle bodies and aftermarket ECU - 325 bhp and a whole heap of fun

Not very Autoshite but always thought the Ferrari 308 was an oddball choice for a rally car especially on gravel stages

Something even more awkward than an SD1 as a rally car.

Maybe the boot is full of moonshine.

Possibly this one, both were campaigned by Gavin Cox.

I too spent many a November night hanging around in forests around the country and whilst the Group B cars were pretty impressive it was this Monza and the occasional SD1, Volvo 240 or Audi 200 that everybody cheered.post-17414-0-28053000-1399647874_thumb.jpg

I started my short and not illustrious rally career in an Austin A30 doing 12 car rallies. A bloke in a mini cooper stopped to let me pass because he didn't think that I knew where I was going and that I was following him. He then found that I took him straight to the end of the stage and he lost time because he was stuck behind me.

Yes, the small Dutch Variomatic class.

Actually, it was the below 1150cc class of the '69 Monte Carlo. To be fair, the rubber band propelled contraption only managed this because none of the Coopers that entered managed to get to the finish line. BL build quality*, eh ?
