Mates Dad had one of these in red, grey interior I think?? in the back of my mind, something about it being a tri-matic  auto ???

I think it was called Triomatic, which I surmise was just the Hondamatic transmission found in contemporary Ballades and Civics with a different name ;)

Just did a google image search for Acclaim Turbo's and this very car appears ,it was used to illustrate an article on Classic Motoring( no,me either) in July 2012.

Incidentally the Avon Turbo doesn't look anywhere near as cool as I thought, probably true of me in 1983 too.

My only memory of these is my mum's friend having one, and being unable to get in as the door handle had snapped off in cold weather.

It was gold too. I'm quite certain I've never seen one of these that isn't gold.

Nice buy. I really rate these. Almost bought one once but it kicked out so much blue smoke that I actually backed out of the deal, even though it was only £250.

I've had a very busy day today making a start on this, After collecting my assortment of materials I got the car in the workshop and removed the front bumper and made a start on the valance.

It was a bit scabby so i knocked those off with the grind, applied some krust and etch primer before blasting some stone chip over it.

Sadly i was expecting the stone chip to be a bit thicker so the finishing isn't as good as i hoped but it is only a runabout so it doesn't really matter.

There is a small hole in the wing near the N/S bumper corner but that can wait.

Next was the utter filthy job of wire brushing all the wheel arches and underside, It's a shit job but it's done now.

These inner wing are a bit shagged as is the bit in one of the rear inner arches.

I'm not sure that's a motable item as it only passed in July, I've plastered tons of underseal inside all the arches now.

I also added some fresh stone chip to the sills which are surprisingly solid.

I've a had go under the bonnet with some TFR remover and presser washer, it's cleaned up a bit.

I always liked these. My dad was either going to buy one of these or a Datsun Cherry N10 Coupe. I was about 5 at the time and I wanted him to buy the Triumph. He bought the sodding Datsun...

I love the last picture where it's all tucked up for the night. It looks like the old girl's just waiting for you to shut the door and make her some Horlicks.

Wow how old am I? I remember when I was about 18 my boss taking me on his test drive in a light metalic silver HLS one which he was considering for his company car, I think his budget was £5.500. He bought it in the end and after 100 thousand miles in three years he bought it off the company for £600 for his wife to use. His replacement car was a Citroen BX 1.4.RN

Things are looking up at last, I've had the head gasket all replaced and it's now running sweet, if a little tappier than before, and my dad managed to fix the indicators at the weekend, the old replay packed up and all the new relays were wired up different to the old one so cross wiring managed to cure that.    I've moved the number plate back and fitted some new rear mud flaps as well as a new pin stripe and it's looking alright now.

That wheel arch still bugs me.

I stupidly wasted £12 on the Feu Orange air freshener which has gone stale and i want to replace the tape player as it's shite!

Looks well nice that Trig, apart from the wheelarch!!! What were they thinking. I'd love to have a blezz in it, I bet its ace to zip about in.

Glad it's finally settled down. There must be a fair amount of pudding in that arch are you confident the otherside's metal?

Posted

The other side's been done too, both have had new arches at some point and are solid now but the offside been really badly shaped with the filler, it's also had a bit off pudding inside the nearside inner rear arch inside the boot, seem to be a weak spot around the fuel fillers.

Posted

Still looks good though and lets be honest it's pretty hard to see both sides at the same time. The gap between the end of the sill and wheel arch on my sd1 is about 2 inches longer on one side than it is on the other. I was so busy welding it up I totally forgot to measure it and didn't notice until it had been painted. Luckily the bolt on arches cover my shame. I'm the only one who's ever noticed.

If you want shot of the stereo I will buy it off you I have been looking for one for the stag and with it saying triumph on it it would be mega ace and fit right in.

I am going to fit a CD player and I'm on the look out for some 80's style shelf speakers at the moment, the old radio works ok but it cracks a lot and it struggles to keep any stations (which are all MW), I will be hanging onto it though for when I come to sell on the car on.

Trigger-me-lad I'm slightly more than green with envy. My first car was an Acclaim and I had to put up with a mere HL. You've got velour and cassette you spoilt bastard!

I believe I have a redundant Triumph-brand OEM MW/LW radio (manuf. by Motorola) stashed away somewhere. I never bothered waxoyling it so it may be terminally rotten by now.

As my Triumph has 12 registered keepers and not a massive amount of history I decided to send off for a V888 a while back, last week a big brown envelope arrived through the front door which made interesting reading.

1st Keeper: 01/04/84 - 16/9/85 Miss Ville from Exeter

2nd 16/09/85 - 8/10/86 Mr Darke from Braunton

3rd 8/10/86 - 17/11/86 Mr Earle from, Bideford

4rd 18/11/86 - 28/07/05 Mr Brown from Bideford

5th 28/07/05 - 13/10/05 Mr Baines from Bideford

6th 03/11/05 - 29/04/07 Mr Stone from Bideford

7th 29/04/07 - 04/06/07 Mr Dillon from Bideford

8th 04/06/07 - 23/06/07 Mr Bergin from Bideford

9th 23/06/07 - 06/09/07 Mr Railton from Birmingham (Not Bideford)

10th 06/09/07 - 06/08/13 Mr Horton from Lincoln

11th 06/08/13 - 01/09/13 A.N Autoshite Member from Luton

12th 01/09/13 - ??? Me in Ipswich!

I can't understand why some people have only owned the car a matter of weeks or months, was it that bad?.

My dad had a maroon HLS on an 'A' plate when I was a nipper. I remember it going like the clappers! Left a lot of cars surprised. The headgasket went at 74k-ish.

On the sale front, I believe this car is what turned BL's fortunes around, albeit briefly.

How funny, I must have seen this around in the past seeing as it spent most of its life in my home town. I can't say I do remember it though.
