1997 Fairway Taxi

1997, short MOT and tax but has had a good couple of grand thrown at it by the private owner who loves his toys, he has recently sold his Harleys, Vespa, Lambretta and Audi soft top.

It is available to me for £200 and is in great condition, not perfect, but pretty close.

Should I?

Shouldn't I?

Bargain. Think how much you'll save on taxi fares.

If you've got even the slightest use for it, and can spare the cash, then YES!!!!!!!!!!

No way you could lose at 200 is there?

Am sure these cabs will be changing hands for pension funds in a few years,

Good point! Sadly not exempt from going free in bus lanes

I can ALWAYS find a use for a taxi.

Ok, I is convinced. I shall pop down the road tomorrow morning.

Agree. It's got to be a good investment at that price. These are disappearing fast.

They're utter wank but you can't lose at that money.

You can then come here and say 'ere, guess who I had in the back of my cab'.

"... a bunch of strangers who didn't realise it was a private car".

Noooooo, you took my line. Damn  :D

The guy lives in the next road, he's bringing it over shortly. Fingers crossed.

Well.................... the interior is all good. He had new headlining in the drivers section fitted when he bought it. The engine seems good, the gearbox is smooth and changes like it should. It's had a new PAS pump. The bodywork has some rusty bits here and there but nothing that I can't sort out. It's noisy, agricultural, large and drives like a taxi. It has had welding done on the sills but it is solidly done. MOT and tax run out at the end of August.

I haz taxi.

if you didnt I would. Had a late FX4 that got nicked.

Lets see some pics, have these got that mega ace nissan engine in?

How many miles has it done?

Posted

Should have the Nissan lump?

I used to have a Fairway. The engine was great but the turning circle was the best bit. It was capable of doing a u turn on a normal width road - none if this three point turn business, just spin it round and start driving the other way.

Other benefits, if you've got kids: you can just shut the connecting window thingy, turn the radio up and ignore the little sods completely!

No piccies yet, I will have at the weekend. It has the Nissan lump in which is the one to have so it seems. The mileage? It is over 300,000, so I guess if it runs properly, then that is the best way of judging. It seems I might be able to expect another couple of hundred thou out of it. Check re: connecting window, no intercom sadly.

I wouldn't touch it unless I was going to pass it on for more money as scrap. A cabbie told me that the only ones of these that end up being sold outside of the taxi fraternity are heaps. Also, 200 notes for a vehicle that costed about 40k new? I can't imagine trusting it that much without a major rebuild. I wouldn't go near it.

Well, as I said before. The guy who had it before me loves his toys and he is not short of a few bob. It had what it needed and was even recently serviced by a proper taxi guy. The thing runs smoothly and if an when I decide to pass it on, it will either sell or get broken for bits. Either way, what the heck can you get for just £200 nowadays. I enjoy bodywork, I have a mechanic mate.  It's all cool, I like it and that really is all that matters  ;)  :D

A massive bargain! I thought you could still use bus lanes with these and get away with it?

I'd like to see some pictures though!

I think you may be in the wrong place. A car that cost £40k new for £200, that's what lots of us dream of ... or drive.

I would hold off before parting with the cash. I suspect from what you have told us, that this car "might" have been used as a taxi. I would check the pedal rubbers etc, very carefully. You don't want to be saddled with that sort of history...

oh wait...

Oh I do hope this is shonky and maroon with ridiculous bumpers.

Skattrd, let me make myself clear. I'm quite familiar with £200.00 cars. Literally the last car I'd buy for that sort of money would be a Fairway London Cab. It'll be shot.

Who cares, it's worth at least that in scrap and spare parts if it really is no good (and Ken says it's in very good condition!)
