Rusty is now TWO (2) thirds legal

Insurance, and now an MoT. Whatever next?

Tax in August, that's what.

Since buying this car last October and taking a bit of a risk, today is the first time I have driven it, since replacing a few parts that were either worn or just incorrect - I never even drove it when I bought it.

I have had the seats reconditioned, new Carello headlights, 640 spots, second hand Hella spots, correct numbered wheels (unfitted), rebushed it all, renewed all of the brakes and bushes, track control arms, ball joints etc, loads of wiring, I am on my fourth dashboard and it still isn't great.

Correct Koni dampers, one key lockset, mirrors, fabricated correct battery tray, correct grille, polished up (and scraped off tonnes of stonechip) from the 15 year old Scorpion exhaust, replaced loads of missing and broken interior trim etc etc.

I know this hasn't been a big project, but it was still more involved than I initially intended. Just a few odd jobs left to do now, as and when.

I like to think It's a better car for it.

As bought;

Yay!

As can be seen on this totally legal 'action shot', the battery light is on. Hence the lovely bus stop photos.

This only started yesterday, after farting about with dash illumination etc.

I checked, and the alternator wasn't charging. Oh well, I'm still going for the MoT...

I made it there, with a few stutters and cutting out a couple of times. It still had 12 volts when I left, too.

Alas, I made to about a quarter of a mile from home, before it was as dead as a fibreglass kitted Nova.

My mate came to the rescue in his MR2 Turbo. 15 mins and it was enough to limp home.

I think it is probably the crimped connector on the alternator power supply.

Possibly the final nail in the coffin for it was when I flushed the coolant system.

We shall see. It won't take much investigating at any rate.

All in all, a happy morning. It drove great. It is absolutley rock hard, but I expected as much.

filthyjohn and I have done a pretty decent job on the wheel allignment. First time and all that.

Result!

Cheers fella! It scrubs up alright like. I would prefer it if it was your colour!

Have you investigated yours any further yet?

Nice work man.

Not failing is for winners.

Indeed it is! Even my 'new' car had a couple of advisories. Lol.

Whilst at the testing station, a random bloke said he has some old number plates for it, and even an old log book.

The chances of this are extremely low, given that the furthest North this car has been before me, is Nottingham.

Sure enough, he mentions the coloured lad who used to own it and was also invloved with a lovely young white girl called AMY...

Left him my number, and it would be great if he can dig something out! #smallworld

Small world indeed.

How odd. How many owners has it had? And was he one of them or summat?

Posted

He has never owned it. Seemed to know the lad who had, i forget his name. I found it out when I came across a few photos like the one above.

Matey also mentioned someone in South Shields, so fuck knows.

Think he is gonna do some digging for me though.

Just removing those ghastly b/w number plates alone has made a massive difference. Bloody lovely that and no mistaking.

What a tart!

None of them must have driven it very far mind.

16. No doubt. Impressive* eh(!)

By my working out (do not trust this), it would seem to have covered whatever is on the mileometer now, plus another 200K.

That, along with it being whored out all over the South and South West, make me admire it more than a low mileage, one owner car - in some ways.

Still here. Still tickin! I will also be racking up the miles when there is no salt on the roads.

She's know in RS circles as 'Kylie', cos it just kept coming back. LOOOOL

Cheers for the kind words folks!

I know it's cool and youthful to like old school Fords and to jump on the bandwagon for stuff that wasn't valuable a couple of years ago (like mk3 Escorts), but they look amazing.

Posted

I like the Econolights, I put a set in my Cortina.  Essex number, could have been a Ford registered car.

Posted

No but I will be over where it is stored a few times in the next couple of months, Shitefest 2013 being one of the times so I will have a look, may try get it to the show field, just its a bit loud due to a huge hole in the 4 branch manifold.

And if you're calling yours "Rusty" then I dont know what the heck I should call mine

"Fukt" maybe

Looks a trillion times better in standard guise. Whoever thought that b&w plates on this vintage of car are cool need shooting. A very well-executed resto. Well done!

Alternator issues on these (and almost any CVH/OHV motor in Fiesta/Escort) is possibly the wiring which runs across the bottom of the radiator on the front panel, having become overheated by the exhaust and eventually just breaking up. Take a peek before writing off the rotating parts.

Back o' the net, that one. Like the pic of it next to the white one!

Top bombing. Black and clean is a good look, especially with proper plates.

for as long as ive remember the 16eye has been what ive always considered the connoisseurs choice over the RS turbo , at least without the turbo boost to be turned up to 14 the thinking sporting driver has to utilise his/her machine with a view to appreciate the factory hotted 1600 with its cammed solid tappets, 4 branch and hotter efi rather than the obstensible addition of free power via a bleed valve

i hope to see this pedigree down the midlands,,or whence forth i gan north

That looks really cool, didn't like these for years, but perhaps the rarity value adds to the appeal....

very nice car, did this at one point cruise the streets of stoke on trent??? the numberplate seems very familiar to one that i used to see around

I know what you're saying, and anything is 'scene' in one way or another, these days.

I personally have always been a fan of spots, fogs, vinyl etc and the 16i also reminds me of an RS200 from the rear (lol). My mam used to have a three door mk3, and this particular model has always been a source of interest to me.

Cheers.

Good call on that retrofit! They do seem fun. The reg on the car now is not the original. It was TWO 80Y up until around 1994, but that change did indeed take place in Essex.

My Scorpion manifold also needed a tickle with the metal glue gun. I know the noise to which you refer.

'Rusty' is just a name that tends to follow my old cars around, no matter how clean they are really. This will win no prizes, but isn't a bad egg, overall.

I am a big fan of the early XR3. Still regret not buying this one for £300.

Thanks mate. I plan to improve it further, as always. Dealer plates, sticker, tax disc holder. Possibly some SERCK plates. Mudflaps.

Original is best.

Mind, it pains me to say it, but those pre '74 plates actually suited it. In terms of matching the paint and vinyl colour.

Not my bag though.

Shall do squire. TY.

Fab motors, the MK3 just looks so neat.

Cheers marra. Funny how once-common/boring cars now peek the interest a lot more. Especially on here! Lol.

AMY is/was a great looking car. They do look cool, alongside each other. I do like those photos too.

Cheers. Not my first choice, but I bought this on condition, rather than colour. It's a shame a lot of the details are lost on the black ones, but when clean, they go a long way to make up for that.

I just love it. Yum!

Do you like Fords then? I had no idea! Thanks.

Why thank you mista. You seem familiar...

It's never gonna win any races, but this isn't 1992. Who cars. I just want to roll around and have some fun on the lanes.

That popping and banging on the overrun makes up for the lack of any snail for me.

Never been a fan of the look of the S1 really. I like them more these days, but still...

Hopefully I shall be having a womble down to RR in the errrr Panda . Failing that, I shall endevour to bring the second choice machine.

That looks really cool, didn't like these for years, but perhaps the rarity value adds to the appeal....

Stickers and spots man. A winning combination. IMO anyway lol.

Thanks mate. I don't think it did. As we all know though, it has been about. It was originally registered TWO 80Y, but that was a while back.

Sorry for boring you with the above!

looks very ace to me

Cheers pal. Hopefully it will behave itself when I press it into semi-regular service.

I know the ECU's and colils in particular can be troublesome!

+10 pts for being the northernest of the owners.

Word to Big Bird.

I like it when you get arsey Northerners from Leeds etc on forums, who dismiss us. They dislike how supa norvern we are.

You, even more so.

That is to say you are higher up, not liked less.

Scotland doesn't count.

Are they even a country? I thought it was just a giant skag factory with a poorly patrolled perimiter.
