Bren Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 Having a mooch on ebay, some of the prices seem to be optimistic to say the least. £7995 for a W reg 3.0 Ghia? There seem to be a few between £1 - 2K that obviously are projects, it would appear that £3k is the start for a nice 2.8. Unless the car was a mint brooklands or RS 3100 I would find it very difficult to justify five figures on a capri - for that money I could have an interceptor.
overrun Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 An RS 3100 is on my list. My list doesn't feature many cars, that's definitley one though. Capri prices have been on the up for a while now, as you know. I always look at it as good and bad.
Sigmund Fraud Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 Having a mooch on ebay, some of the prices seem to be optimistic to say the least. May I refer you to the Autoshite lexicon, check the entry for 'scene tax' If I had £8K to spend on a big, thirsty coupe, I would probably get a decent XJS and put the other £4K in the bank for the inevitable repairs come MoT time.
trigger Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 All old Ford prices seem to be on the up, I watch the Mk3 Cortinas just to get an idea to what mines worth and some of the prices they reach is quite bizarre, there was N plate 2000E recently with poorly fitted front wings, damaged interior and missing a number of parts after a poor respray that got to £2400 before getting pulled for example, even boggo Mk4 Escorts seem to be increasing.
cort16 Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 Trigger I recon you'll be able to sell yours in a couple of years time and use the money to buy a nice Villa in the south of France as there aren't actually that many nice ones out there. There was a decentish 2.8i mk3 Capri with a years MOT sold for 2 grand at that Classic auction I was at a couple of weeks ago. It's looked reasonably rust free but you could see sunken filler in the quarters and it was breaking out in the rear valence and around the arches. It was probably a good place to start to make a nice one while still being able to use it.
Richard Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 If it's got six cylinders it isn't a proper Capri. The whole point of them is show without go. fordperv 1
fordperv Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 Unfortunately the capri has started to be hit with scene tax it did well to avoid it for so long and I'm happy to say I'm guilty of scene tax evasion lol
tooSavvy Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 For My Sins.... I was associated with the 'Capri Club' for some while in the 80's, North East Area Organiser/rep was a close friend.... [3.0s, then 2.8i] >> HIS... I suffered 1.6L (with 'pepperpots', though ) His brother a..c..t..u..a..l..l..y closed a deal on a 'duck tail' 3.1 kosher jobbie..... however, the story derailled somewhat when.A.) He found out how much the insurance would be, 20 yr old.B.) He priced 'bits' reqd to get it fully on the road..... ... it had the 'arch pack' and learry alloys last spoken of as 'being at the lock-up', near Kingston Park, Newcastle. troo stories tooSavvy
Pete-M Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 Mustard mitt, my favourite Capris are all unavailable for sensible money now. I'd love a 3000E, but there have never been any available when I've had the money to buy.I've had a few Capris, mixture of 2.0 and V6 ones. Favourite of all was a 3.0S Mk3. It was more amusing than the 2.8i.

Unless the car was a mint brooklands or RS 3100 I would find it very difficult to justify five figures on a capri - for that money I could have an interceptor.Id be very wary of £3k cars.Personally, If I was to do it again, Id buy a clunker and know it was a pile of shite that needed work or Id bag a very good one with somesort of detailed "these are the photos of its rebuild" history.I suspect that there are a fair few out there that havent had their carpets taken out to clean them and havent had that little scab of rust discovered in the footwell, in the corner by the inner sill/wing, and picked at until its a hole the size of an Elephants anus......Thats would just the drivers side.Ok, they probably dont rot anymore than any other car but, for the money, they can be a very expensive mistake unless you can weld and fabricate or you know somebody that can.Probably the most atrocious handling car in the wet too, makes a V8 P6 seem like an Imprezza.Lovely looking car though, Id never say no to having another.

All? Not really- I'm sure that the mk1 Focus will attract scene tax earlier than the mk3 Granada. There's a certain amount of corrrelation going on with the fact that I own an example of the latter.
Junkman Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 EUR 34,500.http://www.bonhams.com/auctions/21284/lot/7/Not that bad a deal really, considering the going rate for the Bavarian stuff these regularily outperformed on the race tracks.
autofive Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 I drove a capri today it was most pleasant but then i also drove a mk2 cortina, a sierra, a VW LT and a Granada
Split_Pin Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 Anything with a Ford badge is guaranteed to be a real nest egg at some point or another. Even standard MK3 Escorts in good condition are becoming more valuable. Everyone just loves them! I do drool over the 1.3 and 1.6 L Capris in my old Ford brochures from the early 80s. Cordoba beige please!
oman5 Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 The ultimate shiteist model would have to be a 1.3Ls in highland green. with a poo brown interior, obviously.
ShiteRider Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 I've two mk5 'tinas, an immaculate saloon and a rare version of the estate. I was lucky i got them got for good money but i bought them as an enthusiast not an investor. That said it's nice to know they're worth more than they cost..........think if/when they go i'll move on to hillmans or triumphs, something like a nice avenger or a sprint.
Station Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 How much could I get an OTR 1,6 or 2,0 laser or whatever for? I love these cars, but wouldn't know what to pay if I see one.

I love these cars, but wouldn't know what to pay if I see one. These days £1500 should get a good 'un............ bit of a bastard really as i sold an okay red 2.0 5 speed laser about 8 years ago for £50.........wouldn't get a gearbox for that much now
Station Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 I remember my mate got one for 300 quid, rang us and said 'come outside' We did and he was leaning on the roof of it. I clearly remember them being 'the poor mans classic Ford' not long ago, but always lusted for one, but the days of getting one cheap are gone! Bugger!
