Part Worn Tyre Advice

I've used http://www.topgeartyres.co.uk in ellesmere port about 3 or 4 times now, mainly because they stock branded performance stuff as well as the usual 'get it through an MOT' fodder. Each time, I've come away with at least a branded matching pair or even full set (got a set of 4 dunlop sport maxx on my old civic type r for about £160 that were virtually new) and they've let me pick which ones I want. Twice one of them has gone flat overnight, which has been replaced without question both times. Every time I've been it's busy. I'd say the only thing that lets it down is the opening hours - half day saturday and shuts at half 5 I think, so longer hours would be a good thing.

For me, anywhere that lets me see what I'm getting before it's fitted and sorts it without fuss if it goes wrong (and is priced right) will get my business. I'd echo other suggestions about fitting mytres stock and punter's own stock as well (recently cost me £60 to get a set of ebay tyres fitted and balanced which almost wiped out the saving I'd made on them. Infact it would have was I not able to sell the old ones).

What's the best way to advertise? Cheapo radio adverts or flyers under wipers at carparks?

Stacks of flyers in chippys, kebab shops and pubs seems to be the way garages promote themselves around my area...

Liverpool is very competitive for part worn tyres.

A good friend has a tyre place in Liverpool and it's a tough trade. Also, there are plenty of places that just do part worn tyres.

Could be money in the van idea.

There was an engineering firm near me who spruced up one of their spare derelict units and opened a budget tyre centre, it was in a good location on a busy commercial estate and looked pretty smart, sadly it absolutely bombed from day one and closed again pretty quickly - shame really but I'm not sure he thought it through, it was a pretty quick transformation from nothing to a fully functional business.

I think a lot of people will either go to the one they know and trust or go to the nearest one with the part in stock.

If you want to do it though, go for it.  Do your research, find a niche and fill it.  You might regret not giving it a go, you're unlikely to regret it even if it doesn't work out in the long run.  Running your own business is very satisfying and you can learn a lot.

You'd want to be very careful about who took your scrap tyres away. Once the EA know (or find out) you're dealing with tyres then they'll want to see proper receipts from a fully licenced waste removal company. If you don't produce these receipts, and/or the company in question have just thrown them over a hedge in Helsby, you're going to be financially bum raped. Dry.

Part worns are for winners, shit new tyres are shit and expensive and good new tyres are very f-ing expensive. I've just bought a mondeo on the back of the fact that I need it's decent part worns tyres for the school run Leon and have found many times in the past it's cheaper to buy a set of wheels than get new rubber. I say tyres fittings a gold mine for those who don't mind getting a bit grubby.

Just made a pair of plant pots today from a old set of polo steels and tyres, not sure if there's a market for those though may be worth a look.

Many motorsport tracks have been keeping me in part worns so might be worth a look for tyre disposal. I wouldn't charge moneys for the shite I've put on my bike for the last few years!

Anyone got a 17 - 130ish rear bike hoop or a pair of 14 - 205 to go on my van?

Bloody true!

I had put four new tyres on the Pug when I got it, the first time I had this done to any car I owned in my 30+ year driving career. Never again!

Like everything new, they were utter shit and it took until they were part worn (about 3k miles) for them to become halfways useable.

Does anyone out there have a spare pair of 185HR14s, or 185/80R14 91Ts?

My tyre usual place, who are very good, sometimes dont stock the right size in tyres at the time I need them. I've tried other places, some tyres were quite expensive for part worns (£50 + fitting) others were very cheap, but you get what you pay for. I got good brand tyres with full tread cheaply but they would go flat after a few weeks, some of the stock the cheaper places carried were already damaged/worn.

A few months ago, I was 'reccomended' to a place by my old garage man. The Micra was taken to have 2 part worn fitted at the back, upon having the car returned, I discovered that the tyres were undersized, tread very low and the tyres were over 10 years old, I didn't pay them, instead in returned to my usual place who fitted some good brand part-worns at the correct size and under a year old. I chucked the crappy old tyres back to my old garage man who I assume returned them.

My usual place in Cradley Heath has a very professional, friendly service, he will supply only the best part worns, no over aged, under treaded crap, he also stocks new premium and low branded tyres. If this place doesnt carry the size I need, I'll pop to my other tyre man, not as professional set up but does carry quality part-worns, he will often have some wiered sized tyres and alloys for sale too.

If you're interested in doing decent new tyres, I know a chap who's rather cheap trade. Not that far away either.

The Goodyear Eagle F1 asymmetric 235/45/17 jobs on the Legnum came in at around £93 each new, trade. They're worth it.

I'm a fussy bugger even with part worn tyres, and I buy cars with strange and unusual tyre sizes far too often. One part worn with 5mm on for the Jaaaag (255/45/17 Continental) cost me £45 and took six months to find at that price.

There's money in pairs of matching half worn performance size jobs.

find your niche. perhaps part worn brands. target people who know enough about cars to want the good stuff rather than ditchfinders and will pay a bit more for someone who knows what they are talking about. Round by me I used he ones open on sundays, didn't jack my car up in random places, talked to me about choices (good upselling) and offering things a lady would appreciate (friendly smile, magazines, free tea and coffe, no talking down to them).

Don't have anything to do with a company that allegedly sounds a bit like mytyres

They charge the customer for "fitting".

You fit.

You allegedly don't get paid.

I am also going to need some "liability insurance".  For my business (with is different) I will be registering a Limited Liability company with companies house.  If I get a letter from a solicitor saying that someone wants to sue me then I will send them back the company bank statement that will show that the company is worth £2.50.  I think that they will loose interest.  I was worried that this would mean paying a chartered accountant every year, but my latest research indicates that I can in fact submit accounts to companies house and HMRC (corporation tax) myself.

This is what I will do but might be bad advice for many reasons.

If you have some storage space maybe you can store peoples winter tyres for them in the summer and their summer tyres in the winter.  The charges for just swapping tyres and balancing can be quite high.

There also seems to be quite a market in buying winter tyres from Germany that still have 5mm tread on them and selling them to UK punters.

Whilst I'm not a legal expert, in some situations a claimant could still go after the assets of any directors (of which you would be one). A decent insurer would be a cheaper solution so if you get any claims for anything you can refer it direct to them.

Public liability insurance doesn't have to be expensive - ours has £5m cover for something like £120 per year.

If I have a part worn I always use a place that I trust for good quality tyres and the gaffa knows I'm no push over, the Mrs fordperv Mum went to a dodgy car wash tyre fitting immigration centre, I inspected them when she said and the tyres they put on were worse than the ones that got removed one was bulged and cracked on the side wall and the other was cracked/cut on the sidewall both had 2mm of tread, needless to say I popped with the car to see the guy who fitted the tyres who tried to pull the wool over my eyes and tell me that the tyres were fine, I left the premises with a full refund and popped to my usual tyre guy

Just had a quick scope around the proposed area. There's a scrappy 150 yds away with a big sign saying that they sell new and used tyres. I'm hoping to secure business by offering WiFi and free tea and coffee (Porsche Coffee Machine FTW) and a clean waiting area with papers and no scrotes on £50 a day cash in hand attacking their car with an air gun.

If I've got time tomorrow I'll nip over and take a few pics of the empty unit and surrounding area and lob them on here for your perusal and comment.

Pics of the proposed premises as promised.

Do you have a wee bit of space outside? Just to save masses of shunting...

Posted

Sadly not.

Posted

That front bit looks a bit narrow I think you'd be tight for anything bigger than a transit. I recon you'd end up with a few bumps with folk trying to get in and out.

It looks very smart though.

Posted

That looks expensive!

£100 a week. Easy in and easy out.

It's very white because it is being refurbished. The floor has yet to be painted.

The access in and out isn't too much of a problem but getting a dead car in would be difficult due to the incline from the road to the workshop. There's room inside for one car and no parking restrictions in place outside. Small office inside (the pic with the ladder in) which could be used as a waiting room. Own kitchen and toilet facilities. Ceilings aren't very high though, might be a problem for tyre racking.

It looks a bit wee. The entrance slope's wasted space as you can't jack cars up on it. Are you going to get into bother for changing tyres out on the street?

The place I use has a big yard so they change all the tyres outside and use the inside for stock, bogs etc.

Agreed about the wasted space. Jacking cars up outside isn't too much of a problem.

I like the idea of a fresh unit as I want to appear as professional as poss and offering a decent and non threatening service to customers who aren't as car savvy as most of us, think Shit Fit customer who needs to save a few quid.

Would that incline cause problems if you need the area to start jacking up cars in? also are you allowed to work on cars from that premises, will there be enough room with the other units around it to keep having cars coming and going all day?.

It does look very smart though!.

The incline is basically dead area, maybe only of some use to store a van overnight or maybe a WARCRAFT special offer vehicle that I don't want to bring home. Most the units in that row are motor trade and vehicles coming and going aren't an issue and might help trade.
