A handsome old barge. Ok the paint is a bit scabby but it adds character and that

Not a fan of the V6-engined 700s, but that does look like a worthwhile project car :)

Check out this website for Volvo 700-related how-tos, hints and tips; it has helped me out countless times in the ten years that I've owned The Volvo:

There's a Volvo 760 (4 cyl) estate at the scrapyard with those seats, I want to make one into a computer chair.

Great purchase bo11, what a hopeless car! I love it.

Top work, Mr_Bo11.

Lakes Autos on the A1 at Sandy have got the biggest collection of partly dead Volvos I've ever seen, and they're about 15 miles from my house.  Give them a bell to see if they've got the exhaust bit you need.

If they won't do postage I can pick it up and send it on.

Yes!! Finally someone can answer the question that has been killing me forever/ a few weeks... What is with the STOP button on the captains chair?

Me mate has more old Volvos than Mill, and even he doesn't know.

He reckons he pushed it and it did nowt. Surely not. It's red!

Top banana graft on this owld jew canoe btw mistah! 8)

Always nice to see an old Volvo live on. I have a real admiration for all of the 7/8/900 series cars after working at a Volvo dealer for a few years. Proper Volvo over-engineering and solidity. V6's must be really rare now, didn't see many 8 or so years ago...

Should be no problem parts wise, Volvo were always keen to support Classic vehicles but charged £££ though!! I know of a couple of breakers round here

Posted

could oil/water mixing be caused by a leaking oil cooler? it's not unknown on these.

That's a great save though, 760s remain worth little and very few seem to have survived.

Posted

Top save!  That is so my kind of car!  Can you imagine how hard it is for me not to jump in the Blazer right now and scoot down the M6 in your direction?

(pause, while you all admire my self-control, and I try to convince myself I'm not in love)

The STOP button is to abort the memory seat function if say I got into Ronnie corbet's car and pushed his memory button. I think.

There are few things as satisfying as hearing a long-dormant engine come back to life after some fresh fluids and a glug of full fat electricity.  Grand work Mr B.

Nice save!

Its a shame about the paint though. Especially the bonnet, why would you use roofing felt to cover it!?

I had the same lacquer peel problem on my 740 saloon, unfortunatly its not an easy fix as it will just keep peeling away, the patches getting bigger and bigger. Mine got so bad that after it had rained there was little white flakes all over the car and floor where it had all peeled and washed off, looked like Volvo dandruff!

It ruined the look of mine so I bit the bullet since the cars a keeper and paid £200 for a full roof re-spray. Looks awsome now!

Great work saving it, cant wait to see a nice new mot on it!

I have been energetically trying to find a way to sort the exhaust on this car at minimal expense, basically that is seeming to be the difference between it living on and going in the crusher. The exhaust is seriously knackered and has been repaired with all sorts of bodges and parts from other Volvos which do not fit properly, so it needs a proper repair of some sort now unfortunately. The 760 saloon has a different exhaust arrangement at the back to clear the independent suspension (not fitted on the estates and 4-cyl models), plus there are about 3 different options for the front end as well, so the correct exhaust is a rare and expensive part. I have looked into it a lot and found a combination of bits (including a cheapish mid pipe from a 760 TD that I could modify to fit) that could get it sorted with new pipework for about £140 excluding the cost of gaskets and hangers.

£140 is a lot of money to spend on an exhaust for a £200 car, especially one that would still have little more than weigh-in value even with a years ticket on it. But equally, I really don’t think I’ll find a way to sort it for much less than that. 760 breakers are not exactly common and the chance of a breaker having the right exhaust in a serviceable condition is almost zero.

I saw a tidy-looking MOT’d 760 V6 go through the bay a couple of weeks ago for £350, I could weigh mine in and put the £140 with the proceeds and buy another better one on that basis. But, I hate chucking cars away. What to do?

Posted

Did you try that Volvo breakers on the A1 near St Neots?

Agreed that it's a bonkers amount of money to spend on a car that won't be worth it, especially if it's not a car you're in lust with.  Would that A1 breakes give you a bit more than scrap money for it?

Spend the money on the Rover, the Maserati or your next exotic shite purchase from France IMHO.  If you want another 760 in 2 years time you'll always be able to find one

Yo, I sent them a message to which they never replied, I should have rung them up really but when I realised how many exhausts there were for Volvo 700’s I got disheartened and though ‘they’ll never have the right one’. A bit defeatist I must admit….!

I'm probably teaching you to suck eggs here but is this helpful? http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.X760+exhaus.TRS0&_nkw=760+exhaust&_sacat=0&_from=R40 - there seem to be a few bits on there at slightly more reasonable prices.

I wouldn't have thought it's the sort of part that would fly off the shelves so perhaps its worth making a cheeky offer?  Would be nice to see it MOT'd given the otherwise good condition it's in.

A scruffy brown 760 would be near the top of my Volvo shopping list, but I don't have a 760 exhaust handy either. Grrrr.

Good luck Reginauld Bolleaux, we're all counting on you...

I’ve been right through ebay in minute detail unsurprisingly. Theres someone selling the correct front pipe for £40 delivered (a megabarg as this is a rare and expensive item, its complex too with it being a vee-engine, theres a flexi joint on one of the banks!), for the forward silencer I have found a motor factor near my work who can sell me one for £48, and the mid-rear pipe is mostly unavailable… I cannot find the proper one for less than about £75, although a TD one looks like it can be modified to fit with a bit of welding action and can be had for £50. The rearmost box is pretty common and I think the one on my car is serviceable anyway.

All of the bits look sufficiently complex that attempts to cobble something up from other exhaust parts would result in likely failure, I guess the shape of the vee-engine and the IRS set up do not make for a simple Morris Minor-style peashooter set up.

If I could come up with some way of sorting it for £60-70 I would cough up, but seeing as the exhaust is so comprehensively knackered that’s a bit optimistic sadly

Spending any amount of money on a £200 car makes no financial sense, especially if a pristine example fetches £750 or thereabouts.

However, Autoshite is about the preservation of ugly, undesirable, impractical old heaps, and the PRV-powered, sedan version of the 760 is as ugly, undesirable, impractical as old Volvos can be !

Still, if you do decide to give up on it, please send me a PM before you call the scrap man.

Just noticed looking at that, it would appear the back box has been repaired with gaff tape too...... le sigh.

I think you've hit the biggest problem facing the dedicated Autoshiter. My Merc is into the hundreds in terms of expenditure, but is apparently worth £400 tops. It now needs welding but that's just the start - the entire suspension front and rear could do with a rebush, springs and dampers. How do you justify that sort of expenditure on such a worthless car? You can guarantee it'll be a shitty old job, with plenty of seized bolts and nastiness to contend with. It'll be lovely once that's all done though, so maybe if I can sell something, I can crack on with it. As it is, it doesn't ride half as well as it should.

Do you know anyone with a pipe bender?

I am sure a man of your talents could fabricate up something which would miss the vital parts and get the gases away. Maybe use the £40 front pipe as I'd imagine that's a bit of a plumber's nightmare.

Posted

I sympathise mistah_Bollz. When I got my KV6 I faced a similar problem, the exhaust on it was shot to pieces and a esult sounded like a chav skyline. So far I must have spent a good £800 odd on it getting it here, tidying it up, sorting its mechanicals and getting it through the MOT recently.

Sadly, these old cars make no sense financially, I guess its down to sheer enthusiasm and some skill/knowledge that keep these old things on the road. You make some money on some, loose money on others.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Maybe stick a wanted ad up on the VOC forum? Apologies to anyone who has already suggested this...

Or stick Xantia running gear in it.

Bung it back on the 'bay Mr.B  it doesn't sound worth the hassle! Should make more than you paid now its running at least!

Try Rednal Garage, Rednal Ind. Est, West Felton, Oswestry, Shropshire. 01691 610466

Assuming he's still there they had shit loads of old Volvos outside.

I've heard nothing but positive*** reviews of the VOC forum, could be worth a shot though. I'm not a member on there, anybody fancy helping me out? It owt comes of it you could be in line for a Community Action Trust (CAT) reward
