Old shite car adverts

Thanks for these - takes me back. It does just emphasise how good (and pricey?) the Ford and GM advertising was. Clear 'aspirational' advertising really well done.  You may have it - but I can still remember pretty clearly the Ford Granada advert - it was driving round Trafalgar Square looking shiney in the traffic with the strapline "The Hush Hour". The BMC/BL stuff seems pretty turgid - which may reflect on the agency they used or budget - the 1800 is big...etc.

Swedish ad.

Interesting drawing. Like it's from a 1960s Observers Book Of Cars.

As for this ad...notwithstanding the merits of the car or its appearance posing these in this way, particularly the background four door nose up made them look very gawky. As for the strapline - someone was pulling BL's leg with this? Was it as funny at the time?!

What happens when the best engineers in the world set out to build a beautiful car is something we could debate at length.

What happened when BL’s engineers fell out with the styling department while managers were too busy worrying about inter-company political warfare was, we got the Morris Marina. And sundry other such stylish* export successes*.

Edit: and yes, the ads were crap too. Ford were always massively better at marketing; in fact they more or less invented car marketing. Others (BMW, VAG) have since beaten them, but very much at their own game.

That's better. Obviously an American agency. And a few styling tweaks in terms of coach lines and wheels give the car a groovier feel. Reminds me of US VW ads.

What a great pic. I want a Sunbeam Rapier.

If I could find a decent quality image of this I'd hang it on the wall.

I had one in the early 80's, it was great fun, and I do still miss it.

I think, like Clive, Reliant have slightly exaggerated the size of their main asset. Mildred will be slightly disappointed by the real thing.

And how small are the occupants of the Hornet - they would have been better getting an Elf*

*Riley Elf was virtually identical to the Hornet.

Do US VW ads have grocer's apostrophes as well?

To be fair, those apostrophes are correct - the steering belongs to our Jaguar, the transmission and brakes to our Triumph. They aren’t meant as plurals.
