Long story short - for mental health reasons Mrs MicraShed is packing in work to be a full time mum and carer to Number 1 Son (disabled).

Current cars are BFO C8 and rattly Micra.

I cant see in the new world order of finances that I can run two cars so its likely that we will go back to one car. For the time being the C8 though ultimately this will probably get replaced (buggered if I know what with as it needs to be big, 7 seats and able to tow 2 tonnes).

Ideally I would like some form of transport better than a push bike to get to work on, but apart from getting another motorbike (which past expeience shows are not that much cheaper than a car to run) Im a bit flumoxed really.

I can see me having the big car pretty much all the time as I work shifts and it wouldnt be fair to ask Mrs MS to ferry me to work at stupid o'clock AM and then pick me up again at mental PM.

Sorry, just thinking aloud here :?

Assuming the Micra's paid-for and there's no monster bills looming on the horizon, are you really going to save that much if you get rid? - It's got to be good on fuel & relatively low for road tax & insurance. Short of replacing it with a Cavcraft* bicycle, you're probably as well off hanging on to the Micra to get you to work & back.

Cheggers got it right.

If I were you, I'd get rid of the C8 ASAP, keep the Micra and start looking for an Espace/505 Familiale/Sherpa bus that would be eligible for classic insurance.

+4 on keeping the Micra. As an owner of a similarly aged Micra, I know they are tough, need little maintanence and generally just keep on going. I love mine (well, I say 'mine' its actually Ma's car) it kept me transported this week whilst my Sterling blew yet another expansion tank.

Nissans last longer that PSA Citroen efforts.

And for that reason , the C8 is out.

As carers to your disabled son, are you not entitled to a motabilty car?

Posted

Only if we got higher rate mobility could we get a motability waggon - we dont, we get middle rate (well I say middle, its either middle or higher, there doesnt seem to be a lower).

Sadly the Micra is 2 seats deficient for family use and unable to tow the caravan without this sort of thing happening:

I think what Cheggers was suggesting was, keep the Micra just for your commute, then Mrs M can have the C8 for family duties and it's still available for towing. Or do you need to tow for work?

hmmm, I see - what a pain.

Eddy, they need to downsize to being a one car family.

Maybe sell both and buy something 'in between'?

Yes, I got that, RG, and it is indeed a pain; but Cheggers pointed out that there would likely be no gain in simply dropping the Micra right away, and I am inclined to agree. They are, as we all know, pretty cheap to run and if the car is paid for, and tax and insurance are paid, then really it can go until those are due, at least. By that time, a pattern of use for the C8 may have emerged, and the whole situation can be assessed calmly. If it still looks like a sensible move to shift the Micra, fine; but it may prove itself. All I'm really saying here is that nothing needs to be decided urgently.

Take some advice from a diminutive Antipodean...

You'd be crackers to sell the car you know inside out and have spent money on its upkeep. Run the Micra till the test/insurance runs out and sell it. But I guess you know that. You can't lumber the Mrs with a piece of old shite that might get to destination - any one with kids will understand that.
