Guest Posted October 17, 2012 Posted October 17, 2012 I gather from people who moderate other sites that use the same software as this one that there are methods of stopping spambots clogging the board with nonsense, so allowing us to do it instead. Autoshite ought, of course, to be run on some manky old software last updated in 1987, and only viewable on BBC micros, but, despite this, maybe it's time for an anti-spam upgrade?

I've been sending PMs to the moderators with links to spam threads but still nothing happens. You can ignore the threads, but they're still there cluttering the place up and attracting other spammers who probably see this place as a soft option. Sorry so-called management, but it is very frustrating. Surely a regular could be given thread-delete/ban powers?

Split_Pin Posted October 17, 2012 Posted October 17, 2012 I've been a mod before on another site and you really have to be up with the flaming larks to cleanse all the spam that usually gets posted up overnight. Anti spam software is ok, but a lot of these bots can circumvent it. I'd happily poke at A-S with my modstick if required.

Danblez Posted October 17, 2012 Posted October 17, 2012 I think someone added a captcha thingy a while ago but these are quite easy to break now. I agree something needs to be tightened up a little. What annoys me most is that the links they post contribute to the google ranking even if they are not clicked on, but not for much longer apparently. I have often thought it would be nice just emailing the companies whose websites are being spammed with abuse. I bet some of them dont even know their business is being spammed in that way.

You used to have to wait for manual activation of your membership on here too, I remember it took me ages to get on here, that seems to have changed too. I think the main issue here is simply that our admins/mods obviously have lives and aren't on here that much. No offence to those charged with the task at the moment, but maybe we need some new, more active mods? As has been said in another thread, the best thing we can do is not reply to these twats and their spam will simply drop off the first page.

Am not sure if replying to the spam threads on here ever gets back to them, or encourages them unless you click the links they post. Maybe others know better?
